How to unlock the Triple Trouble achievement in Sonic Mania - Definitive Guide

Mean Bean mode is unlocked by getting gold (or silver) medallions - the exact number is unclear. You can see my guide for unlocking those for the following achievement:

Sonic ManiaNo Way? No Way!The No Way? No Way! achievement in Sonic Mania worth 491 pointsCollect gold medallions in Blue Spheres Bonus stage

The boss of Chemical Plant Act 2 is also this minigame, so you can earn it in either version of the game.

The minigame is actually Puyo Puyo Tetris (or, well, the Puyo Puyo part of it). It was also a classic 16bit (or 8bit?) game. This is a very popular game in Japan that's slowly gaining some cult popularity here. It's very close to Tetris. You'll get colored blobs in groups of two and need to match them in a group of four to eliminate them. It's pretty simple once you see it in action.

A 3 chain combo is where you pop 4, then another 4, then another 4 all in one action. This isn't incredibly hard to set up, but how you do it depends on what pieces fall. You can see me earning it in the video below:

I was so happy when I saw mean bean was included. I spent many hours playing it on my mega drive.

I was genuinely surprised when I got to the boss in Chemical Plant Act 2 and I got thrown into a game of Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, luckily I knew how to play the game!

Probably the biggest surprise of the playthrough to be honest!

So why create a solution that isn't actually a solution? It has been months now. Either add to this or delete it.

It is a solution. It just doesn’t have a video wink

This won't unlock for me for some reason, really annoying as I have had multiple 3 or more chains

There was also a great SNES version of this Puyo-inspired game: Kirby's Avalanche!

I can not get this to work. Tried so many times but I can never get the colours i need. Perhaps my brain is just too small...

Though it is Puyo indeed the achievement announces it as Mean Bean which is the genesis version of Puyo lol. I do love that you tagged Puyo Tetris in this though haha hopefully someone will want to buy it and play the damn online with me aha. Nobody has Puyo Tetris on the One :( anyways snagged this achievement on accident. I was talking and not really looking at the screen while I played.

This can be attained either playing against the boss of Chemical Plant Act 2 or Mean Bean Mode found under the Extras section (unlocks once you collect 21 Silver Medallions).

To create a 3 chain combo place 3 different coloured sets of beans into groups of 3 on top of each other on one side of the grid. Then place 2 of the colours on the very top so that it will cascade if a row is removed.

This trophy is earned on Chemical Plant Zone Act 2, during the boss fight. It must be done in Mania Mode.

It can also be earned playing Mean Bean Mode, which is unlocked in the Extras Menu while playing through the main game (Thanks stickghost for the info!).

This boss fight is a throwback to Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, a really fun and addicting Puyo Puyo puzzle game that was from back in the 90s!

You need to use 4+ beans of the same colour to connect together, which causes them to disappear from the grid. The goal is to utilize the beans in a way so that when you set off a 4-colour bean, the remaining ones fall into place to set off another combo, followed by another combo. If you manage to get a combo of 3 sets of beans in a row from a single move, you’ll get the trophy.

It may be hard to explain on paper, so here’s a video of me doing the trophy (Note that I did a 4-Chain, even though you only need 3):

The series must be done in Mean Bean mode. (a game similar to Puyo Puyo), unlocked by medals obtained in bonus levels at checkpoints.

Mean Bean mode is optional for the trophy. It should be considered as an alternative if you are going to get 100% in the game.
There is a faster way - this is a battle with the boss according to the plot.
