If you are underwater you will drown unless you use air bubbles. They will appear in either Labyrinth Zone or Scrap Brain Zone Act 3.
You will encounter Air Bubbles starting in Labyrinth Zone. Air bubbles comes from pockets of air you find on the ground while underwater. Whenever you are about to drown and the countdown starts, you can grab an air bubble that comes from an air pocket underwater to refresh your air supply while underwater so you don't die. This will come naturally as you will need to use air bubbles to stay alive for some of the extended underwater sections found throughout the game.
