How to unlock the Chaos Master achievement in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 - Definitive Guide

It is possible to get all 7 Emeralds by the end of Act 2 of Emerald Hill - providing you know where all of the checkpoint posts are.

Take some time out to learn where each of them is and learn how to make sure you have the sufficient amount of rings before you get there. Passing a checkpoint without the required amount of rings will deem it useless if you are planning on trying for a Chaos Emerald. Also note that if you pass a checkpoint after missing one - it will deem all of the checkpoints before it useless too.

To enter a special stage you need to have collected 50 rings. Once you pass the checkpoint a circle of stars will appear above it - just jump into it to begin the special stage.

Make use of the save feature wherever you feel you need it - at the beginning of the stage and/or after each checkpoint. Once you have the emerald in your grasp you'll be transported back to the main level - However all of the rings and items will reappear, so by all means head backwards to collect some more rings to prepare for the next checkpoint.

I found this video really helpful with the special stages, the rings always appear in the same spot, so once you get the pattern down it's just a matter of brute forcing your way through this achievement.

A lot of these guides have great information however none tell you where the 7 checkpoints are at in the first level.

I had to do some clicking at soniczone0.com but here are the maps.

Emerald Hills Zone 1
Emerald Hills zone 2

Because of their size these pictures start small but if you click on them you will be able to zoom in. If you need more detail you can zoom in on your browser.

The great thing with these maps is they have the directions on how to get to the checkpoint so all you have to do is find them on the maps. Emerald Hills 1 has three checkpoints while zone 2 has 5 checkpoints.

@x2i4eva is a good way to work it out.

Howevers, it's also usefull to point out that getting all 7 emeralds doesn't have to be done in one gaming session.

Save your game before you begin, and head to the first checkpoint. No 50 rings, load your save and try again.

If you do have 50 rings, save the game when you entered the special stage. For example, save this in slot 1.

Collect as many rings as you can. If you made it to the first ring-count check, save the game again, but now in slot 2.

If you reach the next check, and you've made it. Save it in slot 3. In case you get another checkpoint, save it again in slot 3.

If you notice that it's just extremely diffecult to finish, for example the last part. You might want to get more rings in a checkpoint before. Load slot 2 or 1 to try again from an earlier point.

If you do it like this, you defenitly will have all 7 emerals in Act 2 of Emerald hill. Good Luck!

Here is some help from Achievement Hunter/Rooster Teeth as to all the Stages for the Chaos Emeralds. I didn't make this guide-I just followed it and it helped me quite nicely.

The way you earn the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 has dramatically changed, as the Special Stage are different. You will also have more work to do as from this game onwards, there are 7 Chaos Emeralds to collect.

To enter a Special Stage, you must first collect a total of 50+ Rings. Then successfully complete find a checkpoint area in a level. It will then start spinning a circle of stars around the top of it. Jump into these stars and you'll be taken to the Special Stage.

In the Special Stage Sonic/Tails will be on a race course and you must successfully collect the required amount of rings the game asks you for. If you succeed, you'll do another lap with a new requirement of rings. Do this a total of 3 times, and you'll win the Chaos Emerald. If you fail you'll be eliminated and return to the checkpoint in the level you last touched.

The Rings in the arenas are usually scattered, as some make a trail, some go on the sides, some go close to enemies and some even are high up the top of the screen. So you'll need eyes all around especially the harder levels.
There are also Bombs which are in the arena as well. They are deadly as if you get hit, it will delay you from collecting anything for a short period of time and you will lose a few rings. So you must watch carefully where you move.

Tip: It is best to earn this achievement with one character. If you play with Sonic & Tails the AI Tails is 100% useless as he'll only follow you, and will likely get knock out by the bombs or get lost.

Tip: When you get on the harder courses, each time you successfully pass a ring requirement... SAVE!! They get extremely harder and saving is the best way to succeed.

Note: The last level where you'll see checkpoint is on top of the Aircraft in the Wing Fortress Zone. There are no more checkpoints after this area.

Finally: As well as earning this achievement, you will also then have the ability to transform into Super Sonic, which will allow you to go for these two achievements...

Sonic The Hedgehog 2Super SonicThe Super Sonic achievement in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 worth 46 pointsBecome Super Sonic.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2Extended SuperThe Extended Super achievement in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 worth 46 pointsStay in Super Sonic mode for one minute.

I wish you the best of luck with this achievement. Your going to need it.

I will link y'all to a page that REALLY helped me in this achievement:
http://soniczone0.com/games/sonic2/othermodes/index.php#spec...

It has a guide for each and every Special Stage in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, plus it has maps for each Zone if you have any problems with the Checkpoint Posts or the rings.

Good luck, took me quite a hard time to get this achievement.

Chaos Master - 40G (Original Achievement)

Difficulty: 7/10

To get this Achievement, you must collect all 7 Chaos Emeralds.

To get a Chaos Emerald, you must collect 50 rings and run past a checkpoint. Stars will then appear above the checkpoint, allowing you to jump into them and teleport to the special stage.

(NOTE: Make sure you make a "save" right before you pass a checkpoint so you can try again if you fail in the Special Stage. Then make another "save" after you get each Emerald.)

There are more than enough checkpoints in the game to get all 7 Chaos Emeralds twice over, so don't worry if you miss a few.

Now while in the Special Stage, your goal is to collect the amount of rings displayed on the screen at the beginning. Once you have enough rings and reach a certain point, you will enter the next phase of the Special Stage, and you will have to collect a 2nd amount of rings. Once again after this, you will have to collect a 3rd and final amount of rings. After collecting this amount you will collect the Chaos Emerald.

(NOTE: In each Special Stage you may run into a group of black bomb robots, if you run into one you will lose a nice portion of rings.)

You will need to obtain all 7 emeralds in one playthrough of the game.

Some things you can do to make this easier, is set the single player to Sonic alone, not Tails alone because Tails cannot turn into Super Sonic and there are 2 trophies for that.

The reason I say this is because having Tails with you on the special stage makes it a lot harder, because he moves/jumps out of the way of bombs too late. It's ok if he doesn't have any rings but sometimes he collects some stray ones which slip by you and it would be inevitable that he would later make you lose the bonus stage because he hits a bomb and loses you up to 10 rings.

Whenever you collect 50 rings or more and keep them until you pass a star post in the game (which is the checkpoint you start again from, should you die), there will be a ring of stars spinning around above the star post and will get wider and wider. You need to jump into this ring of stars when it stops getting wider. This will take you to the special stage.

In the special stage, there are 3 parts to it and you need to obtain a set number of rings in each section to pass onto the next section. If you fail to get the required amount of rings then the special stage will end and you will not get the emerald so you want to avoid this.
If you pass all 3 sections by getting the required amount of rings then you will get the emerald.

You can abuse the save feature in this game to help you out a ton with this trophy. You just need to press start at any time and Save. The save feature saves the exact moment you're at when you saved so it's technically a snapshot save.
It's recommended that you use a few save slots and save at the following moments:
1. Just as you jump into the ring of stars.
2. Whenever you get the required amount of rings to pass the section.
3. On obtaining the emerald.

The ring and bomb layouts are always the same so it's just a case of memorising where the rings come.
Bombs tend to come in groups and are usually able to be navigated around, there are a few instances where you will have to jump to avoid them.
Sometimes rings will appear to be above you but to get them you need to press hard left or hard right to get them, think of the stage of a giant tube and you can walk on the ceiling of it for a brief moment if you go up the sides very fast. You should never jump to get rings, none of them require jumping to get.

If you fail a stage then you will get put into the same stage you just did next time you collect 50 rings and get to a star post. You cannot use the same star post multiple times.

It's easier to get the emeralds in the first 2 zones so I'll detail locations. You must do these in order because activating a later one will also activate star posts before it.

Remember you will need to re-collect 50 rings each time, but the rings respawn after each special stage.

Now there are 3 star posts in Emerald Hill zone act 1.

External image

1. The first one is high up early in the level, there is a slope which you will have to spin dash to get up and there is a spring at the top. Use the spring to get up to the left and there is a star post.
2. The second one is the obvious one in the middle of the level after the log bridge.
3. The third one is high up later in the level, it is after using 2 diagonal yellow springs, you'll need to use the vertical yellow spring to bounce up on the green platforms, the star post is on top of the loop platform.

4 in Emerald Hill act 2. (although one is very hard to get to)

External image

1. When you reach the horizontal travelling green platform, take the upper platform. After crossing the log bridge and going down the slope, there will be a slight drop onto a platform with a spring. There is a green platform to the upper right that is going up and down. After getting on this, there is a spring on a platform to the right, you can use this spring to jump up to the left and getting the star post.
2. This one will be found if you follow the lower path after obtaining the previous star post.
3. This one is the bugger to get to, you may choose to skip this one if you prefer. You need to use the red spring marked at "5" on the map. You'll need to land next to the Shield item box on top of the loop platform. There will be a yellow spring at the right end of this platform and will take you to a platform with an extra life on it, the star post is on the next platform down to the right, be careful with this jump.
4. This one is easy to find, it's just a jump down from the previous one to the right. It's impossible to miss this as you need to pass it to get to the boss fight.

3 in Chemical Plant Act 1 - It's very easy to pass all 3 of these.

External image

The 2 at the bottom of the level are the easiest to get to, make sure you bounce off the red spring and go through the tunnel system you arrive at. You should come out to the bottom right, this route will take you to the first star post. Where the map is marked "2", you need to turn around and go the opposite way and you will go all the way back to the star post.
The next one is a bit further on from "2" on the map, make sure you drop through the flipping platforms and it's on the left.

Just to advise, Tails does NOT have a super mode in Sonic 2. So if you’re planning on doing this, use Sonic so you can knock out the super sonic achievements as well.

Learn from my mistake.

Complete all the Special Stages to get the seven Emeralds to unlock this achievement. To reach a special stage, get 50 rings in a level and find a signpost. You can do this as you play through the game, and it’s possible to get all seven Emeralds by the time you reach the Chemical Plant Zone – there are (at least) three signposts in each of the first acts of Emerald Hill Zone, meaning you can get the seventh in Chemical Plant. A few general tips:
  • Save every time you start a stage, and at each checkpoint.
  • Play as just Sonic, as Tails always gets in the way of the bombs as his reactions lag behind yours.
  • Aim to get as many rings as possible before each checkpoint, as they accumulate. For example if you need 50 for the first checkpoint, then 80 for the next, getting 55 for the first means you only need 25 in the next section. Aim to get at least 5 above the target to make it easier, and save between each checkpoint.
  • If you hit a bomb, reload the last checkpoint and try to memorize their locations.

There are a total of 7 Chaos Emeralds in the game.
You can get them at special levels.
To get to this level, you need to collect 50 rings, activate any checkpoint at the Emerald Hill Zone Act 1 and Act 2 levels and jump into the circle that appears above it.
To pass, it is best to use Sonic. If you play as Sonic and Tails, the requirement for rings to enter the special level will be higher.
