How to unlock the Complete Chaos achievement in Sonic The Hedgehog 3 - Definitive Guide

This is probably one of the hardest achievements to get albeit completing the game. You need to find 7 Giant Rings scattered throughout the game to have a shot at collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds (See Chaotic Achievement for more details).

It is possible to get this achievement during Act 1/2 of the Hydrocity stages if you have found all of the giant rings in the stages before.

You have the advantage of a save feature that you can use to save your progress at any point in the game so before you start a special stage, save it and then attempt and if you fail, re-load the game save. Then save after you complete it just to make sure.

The video will show you where the first 7 Giant Rings are.

The only problem I had with the video is it's not clear where ring 5 is, because I always took the high road path in that level, had to watch the other videos to see where it actually was. Otherwise a good solution.

As an addendum to x2i4eva's video, there's also a different giant ring in the beginning of Hydrocity Zone Act 1. You'll have to take an upper route to get this, though I don't think you'll be able to get the one featured in the video. Start the level, fall down into the water, head right, and you'll be sucked through the tunnel and shot out into more water. You should land by a left-facing red spring and some moving platforms above you.

Now, there's a hidden yellow spring to the left of the red spring, in the corner. Use this and then hold right so that some hidden fans will pop out of the wall and blow you upwards. Keep heading up and right, and you'll reach a higher area. There's a bubble shield along the way. Collect and keep this.

You should eventually reach an area where you're hitting red springs on the left and right while heading down slopes that sort of lie on top of each other. As soon as you're at the bottom of this red-spring-slope area (right before the water), head left to the wall. You can bubble bounce into the wall, where there's a giant ring.

^ Spam the save feature. You have three slots. Save in the first slot when you begin the bonus round. If you find yourself doing well, save in the second slot and use that as a jumping off point for when you mess up. And in case you save yourself into a corner (i.e. save right before hitting a red sphere for some reason) you can always fall back on the first save.

The Videos in the other guides are great for completing the special stages but there really wasn't one that showed you where in the world to find the giant rings. there's a great site with full maps of the levels that you can find in and navigate to. they can be found here

http://www.soniccenter.org/maps/sonic_3

I took the first 4 levels and marked the rings locations. there are two per level so you should get this by the end of Hydrocity 2

Right click and select "View Image" to see bigger versions, or go to the link above for the Full version (w/out numbering though)
Angel Island 1

1. Enter this chamber from the Right side by crashing though the rock
2. Enter this chamber from the Right side
Make sure you complete this level on the upper path so you can reach ring 3 in the next zone

Angel Island 2

3. Enter this chamber from the Left side by crashing though the rock
4. Enter this chamber from the Left side

Hydrocity 1

5. Enter this chamber from the top by jumping on the enemy blocking the entrance.
Make sure you take the top path after getting shot out of the water tunnel. I missed this one by taking the wrong path
6. Enter this chamber from the top by jumping on the enemy blocking the entrance.

I wish this was listed as the first solution for everyone. It's written perfectly, short descriptions and the pictures are truly better than videos. Sometimes they are handy but I hate long ones where I have to pause, play, rewind, play, etc. One of the best solutions I've seen!!! Kudos!! :):):)

Thanks for the comment! I think its basically because I wrote it after the other ones so it hasn't been around long and its an older game so not as many people left playing to come up vote it. but glad to see its still helping people

This is exactly what I wanted to see! Remember the old Nintendo Power magazines that would have the long pictures of whole levels?

Thank you so much for these!! You might want to add these to your guide as well, as it has the maps and layouts of each of the bonus stages. That way you can plan your way through them.

Once again, the way to earn the 7 Chaos Emeralds is much more different compared to Sonic The Hedgehog 1 & Sonic The Hedgehog 2. To earn them you've got to do some searching first.

Throughout all the levels you play, there are secret areas which contain Giant Rings which spin round in circles (like Sonic The Hedgehog 1 did). Find a ring and jump inside it to begin a Chaos Emerald Mini-Game.

You will then be placed in a 3D View, and your goal will be to run around the arena and grab the Blue Spheres, whilst avoiding the red ones. Touching the red ones will eliminate you and will return you to the level you are playing in.
Each time you touch a Blue Sphere, it will turn from blue to red. Successfully grab all of the blue spheres, and you will win a Chaos Emerald.

You can earn rings in a special stage zone by finding a collection spheres of more than 4 and then running around the outer blue spheres, blocking the inside ones making a red sphere square.
Once you've turned the last sphere in the square to red, all the spheres in that particular location will turn into rings, which will give you extra points. The rings obtained in a special stage zone will not transfer to the level you are playing in. They will be used as points.

Additionally if you successfully grab all the rings in a Special Stage Zone that are available, you will be awarded "Perfect" which will give you 50,000 Points, which is an extra life in the main game.

Note: Be careful if your trying to turn the spheres into rings. If you go too far inside the square, or go off-course you may lead yourself to an area full of red spheres, and a trap.

Note: You can jump in a Special Stage as well by pressing the Jump Button. You will need to use this move when you do the harder challenges.

Note: The longer you last in the arena, and the more spheres you grab, the faster the music and the arena goes, so you need to watch yourself when the speed increases.

Note: As well as successfully earning the achievement. Collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds will allow you to become Super Sonic!

Once you have grabbed all 7 Chaos Emeralds, you will get this achievement.

This is a difficult achievement, especially for those that aren't used to the old school Sonic games. The big rings that take you to the special stages are quite prominent throughout all the zones, especially if you take your time and explore through them.

This has to be done in one playthrough, although not all in one sitting, so you can't get 5 in one save and 2 in another.

Take advantage of the game's save states; save right in front of a big ring. If you screw up, just load the previous save.

In any act of any zone, be on the look out for giant spinning rings. They are usually behind hidden walls, high up in little nooks, or you may have to spin dash through rocks or anything in your way. There are many spinning rings throughout the game, but look out for most of them in Angel Island Zone. As soon as you enter one, SAVE your game as this will make your life much easier. Collect all the blue spheres to get the Chaos Emerald. An easier way to collect the spheres is to run around the outer edge of large groups of them, like described in the Points III achievement tip. Collect all 7 before the end of the game for the achievement.
