Whenever you enter a dungeon (with the exception of the very first sequence before you get the Demon Recon tutorial), Ringo will send the demons on Demon Recon. This will place them at points in the dungeon and speaking to them gives you something, which can be items, new demons, HP/MP restore, crafting materials etc. There's a loading screen and tutorial that go through what icon means what. It's worth the time to talk to every demon you see for compendium progress and materials for COMP upgrades.

Depending on whether you are doing Requests/Aion Directives (which you need to do all of for an achievement) or not and whether you do the Soul Matrix as it unlocks (again, which you need to do for achievements + making the party stronger), you should get this not far into the game. I personally had it before finishing the Central Line.
