For the entirety of ascending in the tower of lost souls, I only used two characters (I copied them both so there was three of them)
EDIT: I have just found out that as of 5/23/13 the glitch where Algol rings himself out still works. It is safe to assume that this will never be patched, considering the sequel came out over a year ago.

For every floor excluding 45-46 i used

Well there you have it. Sooner or later when I am really bored I will go on another account and find out how much all the equipment costs but for now this is all i have, so have fun beating the ToLS

This is addition to already excellent solution from Fatboyy

It just gives you Astaroth with better stats. I've came up with this character after trying to pass levels 57-59 for 3 hours. Then I've decided to make a program that will take as input all equipement stats and calculate what's the combination that gives best attack/defense/hp. After 3 hours of programming/entering equipement stats and whole night of my Mac crunching data here I've came up with Astaroth with these stats:
Attack: 171%
Defense: 112%
HP: 155%

For compare, Fatboyy's Astaroth has:
Attack: 150%
Defense: 117%
HP: 104%

It doesn't seem like a lot of difference, but believe me - it does matter. Using this character I've beaten levels 57-59 in 20 minutes.

From skills my Astaroth has HP Drain A (most important), Hyper Mode (much better than start Dash as you can use it to boost your stats when you need it the most with A+B+K) and Auto Counter C (just a bonus)

btw. if you don't have all equipement available, keep in mind that I've finished Story mode with every character before going after Tower of Lost Souls

Edit: Also, if you can, do NOT get the patch, the patch in essence prevents the computer opponent on floor 60 from ringing himself out. As long as you do NOT get the patch, you should be able to simply be knocked down and let Aldol ring himself out.

OK, I have a hint for level 57-59, coz other floors I managed to beat after some practice with my maxed out Shura and Nightmare, but I had a problem with this one.
So I tried to do it normal way and I died in the second area. But I managed to complete it when I started spamming this attack with Shura almost all the time (it also works with Cervantes):
Back+X+Y (she teleports back and flies at the enemy with her swords swirling). If it connects and the enemy doesn't block, you can follow it with Y, which deals some heavy damage.

I maxed out Shura and made two copies of her for this area:)
I used HP Drain A (which I strongly recommend) and beside this I had Start Dash. One of Shuras had Hyper Mode and the other one Appeal (I used her on male enemies). I didn't use Nullify Ring Out but it may be a good idea. These are just suggestions, most important is the move I described above.

Some practice and you will beat it this way:) You just have to look out on open areas, because it's easy to fall off the stage with this attack.

I'm pretty sure it can be used in previous areas also:)

Basically, make an Astaroth with a good amount of Attack and Defense, then copy him at least two times. Then. make sure one of them have an HP drain. Then, you can cheat the game by doing his Down-Back X, Y. The first move, which needs to be charged, knocks the opponent off their feet with a spin, and the other slams the axe down on them. Keep doing this quick to prevent any opponent from moving a lot. Though, remember, in the late, late levels, they will start Guard Impacting you. Though, even with the patch, Algol can still Ring himself out.
