Pretty self explanatory, and may occur with natural progression.
If you want it quick with no loss to your current file's funds or progression, start up a new save slot. Choose to skip the tutorial and proceed to buy any of the starter ships. On the first route, hold forward and watch the boost burn through your fuel. Once your ship runs out of fuel, you will be given money to buy a new ship, and can repeat the process.

You can refuel at the gas stations, but you have to have the comms unit turned on. The default ships do not have any power running to it, so you will need to pull power from steering, navigation, or cooking units when you get close to one. When the comms is powered, it will ring when you get close and you just have to answer it twice to buy more fuel. Alternatively, you can fuel up at destinations that have a "service station" module.

How do you refuel? I fly up to the gas stations but can't seem to dock.
