I was worried that you would need to die to get this to pop because I wasn't sure why it didn't pop at 1000 (had some sparklite when I started) but sure enough it pops when you earn 1000. The pirate dude does not count so winning 10 times with him will not get you this achievement

By the time you've unlocked most of the map, you should get this trophy without trying. Once you're sufficiently upgraded, spend a run clearing out as much of the map as possible, including any Furnaces or caves you come across. Blow up as many boulders as you can, kill every enemy and you should have more than 1,000 before you've cleared every area.
