How to unlock the Dragon Slayer achievement in Spellspire - Definitive Guide
The first thing you will need to do on your way to the platinum trophy is ascend the tower all the way to the 100th floor, defeating monsters by spelling words from a selection of 10 letters to deal damage. Longer words do more damage.
As you progress you will earn gold, which can be spent on four distinct types of upgrade:
- Wands - wands come in four elemental varieties - fire (deals damage over time to enemies), freeze (prevents enemies from attacking for a short time), poison (damage over time) and drain life (restores a small amount of life to your character upon every attack). There are four tiers for each type - Cheap, Professional, Master Craftsman and Legendary. New wands are unlocked by ascending floors and completing star challenges. My advice would be to buy each new wand as soon as it is available - each one deals more damage than the last, and it's useful to have each elemental type available for use in case you find yourself up against an enemy with a specific weakness. In any case, you will need to buy all of them to unlock the Master Wand, which does extra damage against dragons.
- Robes - these increase your base health, and have a unique effect which kicks in when you are attacked - either reducing damage from certain enemy types, negating status effects, or inflicting status effects on whoever attacked you. New Robes are unlocked by ascending the tower and completing star challenges. For the most part you will want to be killing enemies before they attack you, so there isn't much value in upgrading these at first. The exceptions are the Druid's Robe, which helps immensely to survive a tricky boss encounter at level 40, and the Luminous Robe, unlocked after gaining 82 stars, which needs to be fully upgraded for a trophy.
- Hats - these boost both health and attack power, as well as imparting a unique effect on your attacks. New hats are unlocked by ascending the tower and completing star challenges. You will need to buy all of them eventually for a trophy, but I found myself using the Dark Sorceror's Hat for the majority of my playing time. It doubles the damage of 6-letter words, effectively making them as powerful as 8-letter words while being much easier to find. Equipping and fully upgrading this hat will make the majority of normal levels and star challenges a breeze.
- Persistent upgrades - increases to your health, attack power and inventory size. I would recommend upgrading your inventory size to 3 as early as possible (and 4 when you can afford it), and buying an attack power upgrade whenever you find yourself with a few thousand spare coins.
Progressing up the tower and completing star challenges will be easiest if you kill enemies before they attack you. Try to find 5- or 6-letter words in the selection of letters given to you, type them as fast as possible, and hit attack as soon as you are within range of the enemy (as soon as the sword glows green). With a bit of luck you will be able to kill most enemies within one or two hits. Enemies can attack as frequently as every 4 seconds, so you'll need to be quick - this is much, much easier to do on the Vita's touchscreen than it is on PS4.
I would recommend progressing through the levels one by one until you get stuck, which normally happens around every boss fight. At this point you should backtrack, replaying levels to farm extra gold and complete Star Challenges. Invest the gold you earn into new wands, attack power upgrades or hats which will allow you to kill enemies more quickly.
For boss fights, make sure you are using whichever wand the boss in question is weakest to. Keep hold of shield powerups - if you have managed to take away more than half of the boss's health before they attack for the first time, use the powerup to survive the attack and make sure they're dead before the second attack. The only fight where this doesn't work well is on the 40th floor - the Goblin attacks too quickly.
For the dragon fight in particular, equip the Master Wand with as many upgrades as you can afford, and the Dark Sorceror's Hat. Fill your powerup slots with full health tonics (if you can survive a hit from the dragon) or shields (if you can't), then nail him with 6+ letter words as quickly as possible, healing or shielding to lengthen your survival time.
When you fight the Dragon on the 100th floor for the first time - whether you win or not - the Endless Dungeon will open. If you're struggling to kill the Dragon, you can go here to farm for gold and powerups, as well as making progress towards the game's most time-consuming trophies.

Story-related; cannot be missed.
These achievements all take place in the tower, which consists of 100 floors. There is a boss battle (and related achievement) every 10th floor except the 90th floor, which is just a gauntlet against every enemy type in the game.
Right from the start, buy the encyclopedia in the shop so you can see the weaknesses and strengths of every enemy type. This is a great reference to have and is incredibly cheap. Ignore everything else in the main screen of the shop, such as base health and base attack upgrades, extra pouches for items, etc. These are all huge wastes of money. I highly recommend making your way up the tower, floor by floor, using the bare minimum. Don't buy upgrades for robes, wands, or hats, and don't buy any new of each until you absolutely have to in order to progress (because you can't do damage fast enough to kill enemies before dying). It is really easy to finish each floor with brute force and not get hit, so don't bother buying special robes or hats to increase health.
Each time you get to a boss floor, play the fight to find out its strength and weakness. Then back up and equip an appropriate wand that the boss is weak to. This is the time to buy a new wand with a higher damage profile. Finish off the boss (using an anagram solver if need be) and continue to use your new wand as long as you can until you get to the next boss, at which point you may need to buy a new wand or switch types. Again, don't waste money on upgrades, hats, or robes, as you'll need all the money you can get for upgrading top tier items at the end.
Every time you finish a boss and/or buy a new wand, go back and replay previous floors to earn stars on them. This will be even easier with a stronger wand, so you should plow right through enemies. This will also earn you a lot of money, and earning stars unlocks new items in the shop too.
As far as defeating enemies and bosses, it will seem obvious that longer words do more damage, so use as many long words as possible. While this is technically true, it can take time to enter each long word, giving time for enemies or bosses to attack and easily kill you. A better strategy is to work your way up to long words using the controls:
- brings up the previous word you entered
- erases a letter
- submits the word
This may seem simple and pointless to elaborate on, but getting used to this method will make you very fast and impossible for enemies to hit you. When you enter a word and send out your attack, the game pauses for a second or two while the attack moves and hits the enemy. This gives you enough time to enter another word and not give the enemy time to attack. Here's an example of the type of word progression I'm referring to:
Enter MAT and press
Press , add an S to make MATS and press
Press , press , add an E to make MATE and press
Press , add an S to make MATES and press
...
You can then repeat for MATER, MATERS, MATT,
MATTS, MATTE, MATTES, MATTER, MATTERS
If you were just using an anagram solver and entering MATTERS, you would do decent damage, but this allows you to spam words very very quickly (once you get used to the button pattern) and pretty much makes you unstoppable. Obviously not all floors have letter patterns conducive to this, but any time you can stack and progress words like this, you'll be much faster and do more damage over time.
Once you get to the dragon at the top, you'll find it resists every damage type and has a massive health amount. This is why you've been saving all of your money and earning stars along the way: buy every wand so you have access to the final wand, which does dragon damage. You can't buy this wand until you earn 92 stars and have bought all other wands. It is possible to defeat the dragon without this wand (I did it with a fully upgraded legendary fire wand, but I needed two health potions and I typed incredibly fast) but it is way harder than it needs to be. If you've been saving money by replaying all levels to earn stars and by not buying lots of robes and hats, nor any upgrades, you should easily be able to afford all wands and the final wand, as well as some upgrades for it. You should also be using the Dark Sorcerer's Hat, as its double damage from 6-letter words is an excellent benefit. If you don't have enough money, you will unlock the dungeon upon reaching the 100th floor, so you can earn money there while working on related achievements, then come back to buy upgrades to beat the dragon.
Upon finishing the 100th floor, you'll unlock all of these achievements.
