How to unlock the Skills Improving achievement in Spelunky 2 - Definitive Guide

Olmec is the second boss in the game and is found on 3-1 after getting through all four levels of either Volcana or Jungle. The fastest and easiest way to get past Olmec's Lair is to not even fight him at all. Just use 4 bombs to bomb your way down, right where you start the level. Put a rope down and leave. -> https://i.imgur.com/DTzVZti.mp4

For a more detailed explanation on the many, many ways to defeat Olmec, check out my guide on obtaining the Ankh.

Olmec's Lair is a boss fight that can be found after level 2-4 (The Jungle or Volcana). Olmec is a giant stone head that attempts to crush you. The fight is made up of three floors/tiers which are 7 blocks deep. The objective is to get Olmec to break the blocks, giving you access to the floors below.

The first floor has a ladder that gives you some breathing space from Olmec. At this phase he simply tries to crush you, just do your best to avoid the attacks while breaking the floor.

The second floor has a doorway to the Tide Pool level. You'll need to push a stone block out the way before proceeding to through the door. At this phase Olmec also flies and fires several bombs at you.

The third floor has a doorway to the Temple of Anubis level and can be accessed in the same way as Tide Pool. On this floor Olmec also summons flying aliens to help attack you.

The achievement pops soon as you leave through either door. In the video below I leave ASAP through the Tide Pool door.

After beating either The Jungle or Volcana, you will find Olmec, a huge golden head-shaped statue. As soon as you approach him, he will try to crush you so watch out. You can either make him crush the blocks below him or bomb your way down to the second stage of the fight. For this trophy you only have to clear the first section of this fight. Afterwards, just run to the right, past the push block, to enter the Tide Pool area, after which the trophy will pop. If you go down another level, you will instead find the Temple of Anubis, a much harder alternative for the Tide Pool. For this trophy, it does not matter which you enter however.
