Fastest way to get this is to start up Adventure, enter any level, press start, go down to "End Adventure" (which automatically kills yourself), then press X for Quick Restart. Repeat over and over.

Note: I believe you can only get this achievement in Single Player. Ending Adventure will also add a death in your journal, in case anyone cares.

For me, I get many plays whenever I'm attempting to do a speed run (while attempting to obtain the Speelunky achievement).

Yeah, this was the last achievement I needed to complete this game. By the time I got all the other achievements, I had about 760 plays.

I would've had the 1000 plays before I finished the game too if co-op plays counted. I died a lot in co-op.

Yeah, I would say I had around 300-400 deaths by the time I beat the game for the first time. It's a tough game, but once you get the hang of it, it's not too hard.

The consolation is that I'll only need to boost this if I have all the hard achievements. Just under halfway there and I'm alternating between no-gold attempts and Hell attempts.

Use these steps to cycle through plays without watching the screen.

1. Press down+B to drop a bomb.
2. Wait 7.5 seconds for it to kill you and go to the results screen.
3. Press X to restart.
4. Wait 3.5 seconds for the game to load again.
5. Go to step 1.

11 seconds x 1000 plays = 11,000 seconds or just over 3 hours. Your results may vary.

It is quite possible for this achievement to come naturally while attempting to get all of Spelunky's achievements. Don't think you're a bad player if you get this without trying because a lot of people will. To speed up the process, if you lose a heart within the first couple seconds of starting a new adventure, or you're finding yourself in a tough situation in the first couple stages, just press , go to End Adventure, then try again. Otherwise, enjoy pressing , ending your adventure, and restarting over and over until you reach 1,000 deaths. You could also just kill yourself in various ways.
