I can't be 100% certain on how to unlock the boss pod, but i'm fairly certain it has something to do with killing all pieces of the ship whilst under the effects of bullet time. Be sure to give yourself max bullet time when setting up the practice mode if you aren't attempting this in a full game run.

I did this in practice mode and destroying all pieces in bullet mode.
Used Edgar because using X attack has highest damage making this a little easier.
I havent died so iam not sure if it Will pop if you cant get it in 1 go.
