I could be doing something wrong, but there currently aren't any paint colors unlocked.

1. You can't get it right away, you have to play through a 30 min or so tutorial 1st.
2. You don't start with any paint colors unlocked, though it looks like you can get your 1st by completing a couple daily challenges.
3. I didn't leave a neg, but those could be a couple reason why.

This solution is inaccurate. Downvoted for two reason
1) If you're playing this via EA Play/Gamepass a free one is unlocked. Otherwise it has to be unlocked from various gameplay rewards.
2) It is required to complete the prologue/tutorial before multiplayer can be accessed.

There are no free paints unlocked at the beginning, even after completing the tutorial.

You can however unlock this achievement by going to your ship, then select either the left or right auxiliary; you can swap whatever is equipped with the 'Sienar Boost Extension Kit' a couple slots to the right.

Perhaps something has changed, but I was able to do this one quickly, just as the solution says - despite never having played the game before.

I was playing via Gamepass, so I had the free paint colour, but I didn't have to complete the tutorial. When I loaded the game it took me in to that, but I simply quit out of it and was able to access the customization from the main menu.

I didn't have any paints unlocked at the beginning of the game but you can still unlock this straight after the tutorial by swapping out any auxiliaries.

Go to Main menu then Customization. Select 'customize starfighter' with cn_LS then cn_A
You can then select any ship available: Fighter, Bomber, Interceptor, Gunship/Reaper, B-wing/Defender
Then select either left or right auxiliary, you can always swap out at least one thing for something that is already equipped.

For rebel or imperial fighter it's the 'Incom Boost Extension Kit'
For rebel bomber it's the 'Incom Boost Extension Kit' or the 'Arakyd PW-16 Proton Bomb'
For imperial bomber it's the 'Incom Boost Extension Kit' or the 'Sienar KW-84 Proton Bomb'
etc

Swapping out any of these will unlock the achievement and you can just swap them back to default if you like smile
