How to unlock the Rock Collection achievement in Starfield - Definitive Guide

Just like for the organic resources achievement, its real simple. I went to Bondar in the Alpha Centauri system. (Same system as New Atlantis on Jemison)

Its a rock planet and just like for the organic achievement, I ran around for about an hour with my scanner out and cutter in hand collecting every rock I found. (They're everywhere)

You could literally go to any rock planet for this, I personally just went to Bondar. If you don't want to do this alp at once just make sure you're occasionally mining rocks you see during you're playthrough.

I get the feeling there may be easier ways to do this one like possibly destroying asteroids with your ship. According to Bri3r, asteroids do not count.

Hopefully this helps a little, good luck! toast

There is so many planets you can explore that this should come naturally if you’re collecting everything as you’re playing. Or you can spend a bunch of time on one planet trying to get it, either way works.

Anything you collect from asteroids doesn't count, I destroyed a few and collected everything and the counter didn't go up

You get a power that makes this quite a bit easier. You still gotta run around, but you can collect multiple rocks at once in a 30m radius or so. Might want to wait until you get that power before you manually laser stuff 500 times.

I was about to say the same as abootxberic, a power called Elemental Power will help alot. Also putting a skill point into the geology skill gives you a chance of getting 2 when collecting!

+1 what Life expectancy said. On Grimsey I went from 125 to 500 in about 45 minutes

Thanks @LifeExpectancy for the ADS "trick" for the cutter, I had no idea there was a fast mining mode

Extra rocks from the skills do not help. You need to break 500 rocks.

I want to add on to what @LifeExpectancy has said.

Some other things that made this go so much faster for me was having Boost Pack Training maxed. (which I had anyway because it's very useful to have)
The power Elemental Pull. with about ten to fifteen Quantum Essence.

So I just flew to Grimsey. Popped a Quantum Essence and an Amp (not needed but the movement speed is nice) and just boosted around the moon while using Elemental Pull. Took me around ten minutes to go from thirty Inorganic Resources Gathered to over five-hundred.

Can vouch for @chaosturbo8's method, I made a hard save and then ran around spamming Elemental Pull, popping a Quantum Essence when needed, it took me fifteen minutes to go from the 100 I was on to 500, this was without an Amp as well. Reload the save and boom, you're all good

I had around 200 and then did the rest with elemental pull and the achievement didn’t unlock. I think you have to physically mine these with your cutter.

I had 350, did the rest with Elemental Pull on Bondor. Achievement popped at 502, no problems

+1 to what LifeExpectancy said. Went from under 50 to 500 collected in around 50 minutes or so. Surprisingly quick.

Just in case anyone else wants to do it like a miner instead of as a space wizard... Don't be a dumdum miner like me for the first 400 or so, focus your laser! Yes, hold down your ads button (right click or left trigger usually). You'll see the three little bars move to the center and then you'll mine much faster (almost instantaneous for most ores). This also makes it do more damage on enemies by the way making the mining laser by far the best weapon at the start of the game. You can also sprint and boost around and all that while keeping it focussed, it's a strange little weapon like that.

Should be noted you have to mine 500 separate deposits. Even if you pull multiple resources from the same node, it only counts as one. I have clipped proof. Bethesda is bad at math.

Yeah “aim down sights” with the cutter (have to wait a couple of seconds though) to cut quicker. Should have done that ages ago to speed things up.

Thank you, FinrazielNL... Learning that you could aim down sights to charge the mining laser is amazing and after playing 30 hours and having 375 already mined inorganic resources, it's still nice to learn this fact...

Might want to add that you can track this via the status (Y in the character menu) and scrolling down to crafting.

PianoNE0, No es necesario que los tengas todos en tu inventario al mismo tiempo si eso es lo que quieres decir. Es sólo una estadística de horas extras que crece a medida que se recopila.

I didnt even bother with the power or the skill tree. If you hold your aim-down-sight button (LT for me), the button you would use for your scope or iron sights on a weapon, the laser takes out deposits MUCH faster.

Combine that with a more deposit-dense planet like one of the rocky moons orbiting a gas giant (Grimsey, orbiting Deepala in the Narion system for instance) and this achievement is pretty fast even doing it the "slow" way.

I didnt want to wasted skill points in resource gathering tree as I dont bother crafting much and just buy what I need when I do.

The planet in the solution kinda sucks compared to Grimsey due to gravity and bad atmosphere.

minor spoilers ahead

there is an easier method than using the cutter.

after a few main missions you unlock "powers". you need to keep doing the quests from vladimir (locate temples) until you get the ELEMENTAL PULL power. it basically force pulls inorganic resources towards you in a decent radius.
(the order you unlock powers might be random)

find a rock planet and just run around pressing cn_LBcn_RB (LB+RB) to use the power.

i have just unlocked it this way, you can track how many resources you have by pressing cn_start then cn_Y and scroll down to crafting. its the 4th down in the crafting list.

tip: also in the "power menu" (press cn_start then hold up and press a, not there until powers are unlocked) in the bottom left it says how many quantum essence you have. it basically makes it so you can spam elemental pull almost nonstop for about a minute per essence which speeds the collecting up further.
you get quantum essence from

MAJOR SPOILERS HERE BE WARNED. you get alot of essence from the main mission

also one "essence enemy" spawns after finishing each temple.

Do we know which temple you get this from?

It's Temple Psi, but unfortunately the locations are randomised on each playthrough, so you'll only know you've found it when you get near the structure and the name of the temple pops up.

Cutting rocks with your cutter (IE: Lead, h20, Aluminum, etc) that you can scan for a planet survey counts towards this.

I found that the planet Toliman II in the Toliman System works well for this as there is lots of rocks to be cut. Just beware of the wildlife. They can be a pain.

You can view your progress in the character menu status screen under the crafting menu.

As there are some people out there who are playing Starfield via PC GamePass or purchased the game on the Microsoft Store for their PC, here are a few PC pointers. Yes Xbox players, PC shares the achievements similar to Halo MCC. They are not separated by platform like Minecraft.

PC Issue and Solution
Bethesda decided that opening up the command console, via pressing the tilde (~) key, disables achievements. So try not to press that key by accident if going for a legit playthrough.

If you have pressed the key and are no longer progressing achievements there is a mod that re-enables achievements on Nexus Mods.
https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/252
Read the instructions carefully as, for example, I am on PC GamePass but ended up following the Steam instructions based on the name of the DLL file I had to modify. Also, any update to the game requires re-applying the mod. Again, all in the mod instructions.

This mod is suggested to get around certain quest/mission breaking bugs that have not been patched without losing the ability to complete achievements. Is it cheating? Technically, but until Bethesda fixes the issues (if they ever) your only other option is to hope you have a save before the bug or start a new character and hope the bug doesn't happen again.
Legit Method
If you are going for a legit playthrough, the other solutions cover most or everything.

My concise rehash of those solutions is use the mining laser if in early/mid game and the eternal pull power if in late to end game (i.e. around the "High Price to Pay" mission). More on eternal pull and powers in the spoiler section below if you are at or near that point and want more info. Anything you mine must be a rock shaped object. Yes liquids like H₂O when frozen count.

You can track the number of inorganics you have collected via the Data Menu by pressing Tab on keyboard or cn_start on Xbox style controllers. Press B on keyboard or cn_Y on controller to open the Status submenu and scrolling down to Crafting to see Inorganic Resources Gathered.

Eternal Pull and Powers Info
Can I use console commands?
Assuming you have downloaded the achievement enabler mod, when it comes to this achievement yes and no.

If you were thinking of spawning in 500 iron then collecting them all, this does not work. Any resource you collect must be collected either using the mining laser or using the eternal pull power.

As you may have guessed you can use console commands to get the eternal pull power.

So you have to collect everything legit, but you can speed things up if you use console commands.

If you take this route, here is the command.
If you give any solution a thumbs down leave a comment as solutions cannot be improved without polite constructive feedback.

Multiple resources from the same rock DO COUNT. The guy who said otherwise is wrong. It's 500 total resources not 500 individual nodes. If you can use elemental pull, it is much easier. I started on Jemison then went to Bondar (same system) and landed on a volcanic area, much faster. Took an hour to go from 162 to 500.

Depending on how obsessively you play Starfield - and RPGs like Starfield - this is either going to be a chore for you, or come naturally. For us, it came naturally. Incredibly naturally, mainly because we needed the resources to build an Outpost purely for storage. Go figure.

While Life Begets Life (20G) dealth with organic resources (like animal and plants resources), “Rock Collection” deals with… yes, you guessed it: rocks. So, all you need to do is to destroy 500 rocks with your laser cutter. You are a miner by trade, after all.

There are various ways to make this 10 times easier. Firstly, you can invest in the Surveying skill, which increases the range of your scanner, so you can see resources from further away; and finally, by investing in the Geology skill, which will net you more resources per rock you destroy (the first rank will get you 2 common and uncommon resources per rock, when usually you’d get 1).

Invest in both of those and you’ll get it in no time.

If you’re build a crazy Outpost with loads of storage and mining operations (like below) all over the galaxy, this will be a cake walk, as you need resources to get them going. Check out the below guides and put those resources to good use:Also, remember, you don’t have to keep equipping the laser cutter. As long as you have one on your character in their inventory, it’ll be your default weapon when you have the scanner equipped and in use.
