How to unlock the Howdy Howdy Howdy achievement in State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition - Definitive Guide

I have what I think to be the easiest method. Bring two weapons, shotgun and revolver. Equip the cowboy hat, which will be acquired through natural progression in the story. With your shotgun, shoot out the legs of three zombies and the arms (making them zombie nuggets). Once done, you can pick them up as they wont attack you. Lie them straight in a line, back up so you have them all in your line of sight, and shoot each one in the head.

Sadly the cowboy hat will come with randomly searching areas for loot. As this is RNG, there are no known locations that house the cowboy hats that are known yet, however, will update if this changes.

EDIT: User "Calex dEUS" mentions that cowboy hats are primarily found around tents and farms. He claims to have had it spawn in a searchable container upon his first scavenge following the update.

EDIT#2: Multiple users have mentioned using the "Old Lawman's Viper" will not count towards the achievement. Revolvers will be found when looting other places, such as army caches, houses or gun stores. There are smaller odds of finding revolvers elsewhere, however, the locations listed here are your best bet.

Requires minimal skill with aiming and will not require you any red talon ops. If you mess up, its a quick 3 more to try again.

I hope this helps! 😃

The cowboy hat spawns on farms and camp sites, it tell you in the tool tip if you go into the closet and highlight it. Got it on the first farm I searched.

I haven't found a cowboy hat yet to try but wouldn't a Gunslinger specialist do the trick pretty easily? Soon as I actually find a hat I'll try.

It also counts when you miss a shot. I killed 2 before I missed a shot. Killed one more and the achievement popped. I copied the save file before I went to the first tent. Had to replace it 4 times before I got the hat.

I spent a long time just looking for a cowboy hat. I finally found one behind one of the small cabins near where you start. I was starting to get worried because I have already looted most of the barns, farms and campgrounds already. It was a pretty easy achievement too. Just run up to a horde or infestation and run them around until you can get them lined up.

I started a new game and got it on my first try. I used the same cowboy hat as before, but a different revolver. Apparently, the viper revolver obtained via the Chief Jackson quest doesn't work for this achievement.

Yeah the black cowboy hat works but the old lawmans revolver doesn’t for whatever reason switched to an echo pistol while in heartland got it first try honestly it was easier for me to just get a bunch of ammo and gather a large horde of zeds get a little distance between the horde and just fire mad times trying to hit headshots. Did it first try like that

If you have gunslinger this is a breeze; facing a horde or just 3 zeds, hold aim, tap A, fire, tap A, fire, tap A, fire. Given the length of this solution I thought this would be tough.....first try, no problem; 2 seconds at most.

Apparently the Anniversary cow boy hat doesn't work for this achievement :(

If this happens to be your last achievement, or even have all of the heartlands achievements and don't care about your heartland save then I have a solution for you. Start a new save on heartland, then just head straight for your base and don't worry about anything else. Facing your base from the outside to the left of the base you should see two campsites. Finally in front of your base you should see 5 campsites along the mountain. This took me 5 reloads of a new game to finally get the cowboy hat.

Perfect. Got the solution on my first try with the revolver. I had the ECHO-1 that I found in Heartland for the ECHO drop achievement. It had 8 shots and good aim.

I found that lately I've been getting clothing out of every few containers I open. I'm in my second campaign play and have almost finished Heartland. I think that chances for clothing definitely increase later. I got my hat in a farm in campaign.

FYI it works just fine using the Lawman's Viper, got it first attempt. Shooting out their legs and stuff is ridiculously unnecessary. Just run around and gather 4-5 zombies, path them in a line, turn around and blam blam blam, achievement unlocked.

The solution to shooting out legs is for those individuals who may not necessarily be as skilled at shooters as some may be. Figured I would cater to those people as well.

Unlocked on my first attempt using Classic Cowboy hat and a Hunter’s Model 29 revolver. The Gunslinging specialization helps a lot as well - it allows you to hit the A button to snap the aim onto the zombie’s heads.

How do you pick up a zombie? Y just kills them with melee and no other buttons work? I used a rifle as I found a shotgun just killed them.

@Jewlez, it has been a loooong time since I have played this game, but if I remember right, to grapple a zombie I believe you press RT

Notes:
Donno what's funnier, the term Zombie Nuggets, or actually shaping zombies into nuggets and carrying them around lol.

I used an Echo S-3 so the neighborhood wouldn't hear me prepping the scene. Then the Tassie Devil so it was a sure kill. (It's probably fewer than three seconds you have to do it in btw, I'm guessing two -- best to get heads close to each other and get 1-2-3 headshots).

Grab and carry is RT and hold. It uses stamina. You can line them up pretty good with their heads all a few inches apart and then: wham, bam, ba-lam, how do you do?

Lol it's a pretty good test for whether you're a psychopath. I'm probably going to hell but I had a good laugh.

Don't know what I'm doing wrong. I used a "Classic Cowboy Hat" that was in my closet. I don't remember finding it; it was just there. I used the "Old Lawman's Viper" from the Chief Jackson quest. I'm sure I killed 3 zombies in 3 seconds several times -probably in less than half that time. I'm in nightmare mode, where you sometimes get 3 bloaters at once, and got 3 of them in under a second. But just in case bloaters don't count, I got it with regular zombies, too. When I find another revolver or cowboy hat, I'm going to try again.

I threw a decoy near an infestation and went rouge with the revolver at head level when the horde grew. I'm sure I got a double head shot then a single headshot and achievement didn't pop. :/ I'll try the above method but I thought my method was fool proof.

I had no issues using the 'Cattleman Hat' + 'Hunter's Viper' revolver. I attracted a bunch of zombies around my car then climbed onto the hood. From there, very easy to get headshots in quick succession.

The other guides are perfectly fine, but don't get too technical about the hat like I did. The achievement description says "cowboy hat", so I was looking for the "Classic Cowboy Hat." Makes sense, right? Well, the "Cattleman Hat" will work just as well, which I wish I would have known before my last five scavenging runs...

UPDATE: Patch level 17 makes finding a Cowboy Hat much easier. Effectively whenever you opened a container the game would roll for a clothing item to spawn. Unfortunately it did not exclude items you already had. So if it rolled one you did have you would not see it. Now the game only rolls from clothing you do not have, making the rate of a lootable clothing item appearing in a container much, much higher and the odds it will eventually be a Cowboy Hat much better. You should still probably hunt one down using the method I detail below, it just shouldn’t take nearly so long.

This can be done in either the main game or Heartland. I would suggest Heartland for two reasons:

All the characters, specifically Chavez, are overpowered (as is the base). The second reason is both camps and weapons are plentiful in Heartland.

First you must find a Cowboy Hat, a Survivor that has one as part of their default outfit doesn’t count. I’ve only ever found one and it was in Heartland, so they’re actually pretty rare. Most clothing items can appear in any house and certain other locations but Cowboy hats appear either most often (and perhaps exclusively) at Camp Sites (displayed on the map as a tent icon).

While the Bounty Broker does offer clothing items, there are no Cowboy Hats in the current packs. However as these change from time to time, you may wish to double check that the Bounty Broker doesn’t have an easily obtainable Cowboy Hat.

There’s about 6 Camps directly outside your base in Heartland 2 East (past the toilets) and 4 North and Northwest of your base, as you progress down the hill toward the lake. As clothing options are unlocked account-wide, feel free to simply restart and delete Heartland games, simply get right to the camps, loot, and see if you’re lucky.

Now once you have a Cowboy Hat, you’ll want to find a Survivor with Gunslinger, you may already have one, but almost all Heartland characters get Gunslinger (and it is by far the best upgrade) as an upgrade option and Chavez has all upgrades from all trees (yeah, he’s insanely powerful). Gunslinger is far easier than any of the other Shooting upgrades. Dress that Survivor in the Cowboy Hat from the Community screen (hit cn_Y). Equip any revolver (the gun description type will include the word “Revolver” if it is one). Revolvers are very common, but if you don’t have one, any place that you can loot ammo has a good chance of spawning guns. In Heartland you’ll likely be swimming in them, but any location with the word “army”, “checkpoint”, or “Red Talon” in it often spawns a crate of multiple weapons. There are 9 such locations concentrated in Marshal, the town in the SW corner of the map.

Snag maybe one stack of extra bullets, but you shouldn’t need more than the ones you have loaded. Find a group of 3-4 Zeds, if in Heartland right in front of base always has some small groups and some Hordes, sneak near enough that your close to all 3 but they won’t aggro. Now here’s how to use Gunslinger. Your gun must not be zoomed and the Zed must be within about 3 lengths of a Van (vehicle) distance. Hit cn_A, the gun will auto aim at the head, quickly fire. So just tap cn_A, fire, cn_A, fire, and cn_A fire one last time. Then run or kill any extra Zeds any way you wish. One note, using the Gunslinger auto aim does consume stamina, if you’re out it won’t do it. Most high lever characters have plenty to spare to do this, but you could always drink an Energy Drink or similar beforehand if you’re worried.

I'm going to make this really quick. The Description explains what you need "Cowboy hat", a revolver, and 3 zombies. I'm assuming you can easily find a revolver (traders or ammo sheds), and 3 zombies is easy to get grouped together.

So you are going to need help with the cowboy hat! Here is a very detailed guide explaining where to find them (The other guides don't seem to explain this very well and are just "it's in a farm.. so look at farms..")

Where can i find this item?:
The "Cowboy hat(s)" can only be found in "Farms"(area) and Campsites (the tent icon).

"Farms":
The game means the general "Farm" area. There are a few different types of farms in the game.
Orchard, Farm, Windmill, and a few more options... just look for orchard bushes, corn, or hay-bales lying around large empty fields. Most of them can be found in Meagher Valley or the "HeartLand DLC". Once you found them look in EVERY nearby building.

Example of some buildings: "*color* Farmhouse", "*various types of Barns", "ToolShed", "Tractor Shed" and any other building in the general area.

I found mine in a "tool shed" by the "Orchard Barn" and another user found theirs in a garage. It's completely random, and some "worlds" might not even have them in the map. So you will have to make a new save, or change difficulty in your current save.

I wish I could give you more advice on where to find a cowboy hat but they are insanely random. I wish you all luck!
