Infested houses appear as red houses on the map with a large outline, usually have special infected inside and a large number, best way to clear them out easily is to bring other survivors, so if you find a group of 3 new survivors and need to bring them back to the base, put them to work first and clear some infestations.
Make sure you have 5 marked on your map and go nuts. With a party of 4 the zombies have trouble ganging up on anyone.

They seem to be pretty random, and it might be an actual entire 24 hours not an in-game day, infestations either spawn on their own and you discover them by going close, or you get a random side mission to help someone destroy an infestation, where it will lead you right to it and you get help.
If/whenever you start a new game (whether you finish the story and want to, or need to because most people are dead or whatever), just try to scout everywhere first and search for some. Throughout the entire game i didn't see a huge amount of random infestations, it was mainly getting side missions to do so. Sometimes its your own survivors that need help sometimes its neighbors.

According to the official forums its a known bug, it seems to be counting infestations across the entire map.
They have said they are changing how it calculates if there are too many. Something about 500m from home will be the area roughly. Try going to the other city and scouting the whole area and just wipe them out. Probably can pop up again though sometimes it will just screw you over.

Infestations are the red houses on your map, usually with a sort of blood splatter around them.
They seem to increase in number depending on how many zombies are around. So in the first proper home you have, i left infestations, didnt aim to kill hordes, and eventually 5 of them popped up from me driving around or my Home telling me.
I took Ed on a trading mission, which gave me his services. Use a car and slowly drive around the house running over stragglers, then wait at a door/window for groups to come running out, run over those too.
Once it looks a little quieter, head inside and use the dropkick move on the screamers, then the finishing move.
Took me around 10 minutes to do all 5.

A very easy solution:
Just wait until you get the "Memento" Mission,
which brings you back to Mt. Tanner Ranger Station, to get the watch,
Around the Ranger Station there are several Infestations, i didn't count them,
but i clearded out one in the southern part of the map and then 4 on Mt. Tanner,
and got the achievement.

So this is how to do it alone if you have no survivors handy, I make use of cars to draw the big mounds of zombies out and ram them. Then I proceed in alone and pick off the stragglers be sure to make use of the LB+Y technique the moment they hit the floor this is an INSTANT kill and will make your life so much easier.
Remember do not fight the groups alone unless in a VEHICLE!
Make use of the LB+Y combo on stragglers who are on the floor!
