How to unlock the Torn Apart achievement in State of Decay - Definitive Guide
My advice for this achievement is to lose somebody who is pretty much useless to the group as I did here. The bad side to this video is that I did not intend to die here, he simply outclassed this character since his stats were basically none existent.
So basically allow any zombie to rip you to bits and the achievement shall unlock but be warned the character will be dead forever!
The worst part of my video is that this feral COMES OUT OF GOD DAMNED NOWHERE and proceeds to rip me to bits despite me whaling on him with a machete. But at least this video seems to prove that it doesn't need to be a normal zombie or a group of them. Since it uses the word "zombies" when this death was caused by a feral.
Video below showing it working and my pride being destroyed.

You should specify what kind of characters are useful and not. For instance, I wouldn't kill off anybody with powerhouse or reflexes, as those abilities can be quite powerful. I also wouldn't kill off anybody with counseling, as they can keep morale up. Definitely don't want to off your doctor, mechanic, cook, etc.

Well I lost someone who had none of those skills, I think it goes by your personal choice really since I only care for my doctor, cook and mechanic. The rest are useless to me most of the time.

You would think this achievement doesn't need another guide, however there is something worth pointing out here that isn't covered in any of the existing guides. You actually have to get torn apart by the zombies after dying for this achievement to unlock. Just dying may not be good enough.
I discovered this after letting myself die trying to get this achievement. No unlock. Figured 'oh great, this must be bugged for me or something', but I went for it again and on this occasion my character was actually ripped in two after death and then the achievement unlocked. Not sure how exactly to ensure this happens, whether it's related to how many zombies are around, which types etc, but this is what happened for me: I let two SWAT zombies kill me, no achievement, then I let one regular zombie beat me down and then I was torn apart by the subsequent zombies that spawned.
Also worth noting, you can easily copy your save to another storage device to avoid losing your characters when getting this achievement and

this doesn't need a guide. the solution is in the title for the achievement.........

It's fair to assume from the sub title of the achievement, and the other guides on here, that nothing other than dying is required. Hence my confusion, and fear of a buggy achievement, when it didn't happen.
Any guide that offers a little more advice that may help someone with this achievement seems reasonable to me. Plus this is the only guide that mentions save copying, something that is good to know for this achievement. I'm not writing guides to get positive votes, I'm just trying to help people, so hate all you want.

If you want to get this one right away, you can't get this in the starting area since the zombies only are able to take your health down to about a 1/4 left, you always have 2 AI companions with you who will kill those attacking you and once you pick yourself back up you get full health. the earliest and easiest way to get this is right after you arrive at the church. just go out searching for supplies or to the first mission you get. attract a few zombies and just let them kill you. since its early in the game you can restart if you want and not lose anything or anyone.
Get killed by zombies. Easy. You will want to do this after getting to the Church as it seems to just end your game (usually) if you die beforehand, as opposed to giving you the achievement and forcing you to play the other characters.
By the way, if you die your character remains dead for the duration of that playthrough, so pick someone you hate or do it on a separate play through if you are grinding this out.
