How to unlock the Mercy Shot achievement in State of Decay: Year-One - Definitive Guide

To unlock this Achievement, you'll need to finish off a dying community member.

There are two ways you can unlock this achievement so i'll cover both:

First Way: (Spoilers)

Second Way:
The second way is a bit harder to unlock, but can be done. You'll need to get a community member gravely ill. This way can be tricky if you have a Infirmary at your home site. But the easiest way is to continuously walk into Bloaters (those bald creepy naked zeds with the weird walk and the weird voice). Eventually your member will contract Black Fever, meaning that they are pretty much doomed. Simply wait around until the Mercy Shot mission is activated. Then take your dying member somewhere quiet and ease their suffering.

Happy Achievement Hunting!

Great Guide, but I wanted to share what occurred in my game. I missed my opportunity to get this chievo with the first method. Thinking that I proceeded to get it with method two. After killing three survivors and failing to get them sick, the following happened.

This may or may not work for other people, I think I got kind of lucky, but I wanted to share my experience as I did not want to play through again. So it may be possible to get this later than you'd think.

i'm working on this one in breakdown - have 2 people gravely ill now - had 5 people at one point - its been off and on, 2, 3, 4 people gravely ill - no medication, no medical area - no mission - this is a frustrating thing to do - i've even taken gravely ill people out on bloater hunts to see if I could toss them way over the edge - also purposely injured the gravely ill people - no dice - ugh!

I achieved this achievement in breakdown, credits to JuanHODL:

What I did to get the "The Killer" Challenge done to unlock Alan Gunderson.

Use McReady Farm for Home Base. Reason why I used the McReady Farm as a Home Base for this Challenge, it has the least infeected.

Make sure your medicine resources is down to zero. Make sure you have no medical area. They can't be your friends in your community. Recruit many survivors via radio and before escorting them to your Home Base run them into a Bloater (Rotter) zombie to get them sick easier. Kill off your Medic's just in case.

What you want to do is once you have at least 3 Non-friend survivors(More chances the better) in your community that are sick with fever or cough, Just get off the game and wait about 8 hours, let the simulations do its course then get back on the game. They will likely have Gravely Ill or Black Fever. If they don't get more survivors via radio and drive them into bloaters, once they are sick, get off the game and come back later on. Its what I did.

The Mercy Shot randomly pops up when one of your Non-Friend Survivors has contracted the illness Gravely Ill or Black Fever. It took me a couple of hours to recruit all those survivors. It took me a day in real life to get "The Killer" challenge done. I only used the Radio from Lily to recruit survivors because they always give you 1 Survivor that is always a Non-Friend. Don't do any Missing survivor mission, usually they come back as your friend. I don't think their is anyway to make a Friend a Non-Friend."

MY MATCH:

I managed it with 8 survivors, 5 sick, 3 seriously ill, at the Kirkmans' house.

I recruited 8 people and left the game, I waited 8 hours and almost all of them were sick or seriously ill, but still without the mercy shot, I left the game and waited another 24 hours, I came back to the game and there was an angry survivor in the house, I left with him and I did a mission, I took advantage and made him sick with a blooper, when I came back I collected some more resources and the mercy shot mission appeared for my first playable character. Maybe there can't be missions inside the house.

Got this achievement with the first method, currently trying to get the Breakdown achievement for unlocking all heroes (this is my last challenge). I have someone gravely ill for two days now, still no mission. Gonna try leaving it on for a while and see if it pops up.

Be sure to remove any form of Medical Area. As people can recover pretty easily even with the standard medical area.

Doing this for the 4th time now. Everything goes perfekt but instead of giving me the mercy shot mission I get a mission called "fork in the road" in wich alan is at the diner and kills him self after a short talk. There is no option that would let me kill him and just shooting him obviously doesnt work as well.

Finally got it while doing the killer challenge in breakdown. It unlocked along with the achievement for unlocking all heroes. So its actually possible to get it there too.

You might want to add that Pastor William himself can recover from the Black Fever, so this is not entirely automatic through story progression,

Be careful! If you switch your base while Alan is sick and the mercy mission is active, he will instantly die. The mission will end. I botched this my first run through.

I finally was able to sort this out and get it to work - so i'll add this update that will help people using method 2 alot

Of course to trigger a mercy mission you need someone is really sick or really injured. Here is the KEY thing ==> It needs to be someone who isn’t your friend yet (trust isn’t full yet/they aren’t playable). You can find this type of person only either when you first join a group or by using the radio. Survivors from other enclaves who join come with trust already earned, so it can’t be them. It’s best to attempt to unlock this at the start of a level.

@oHIGHRISKo
Easiest way to get this on Breakdown is to remove any medical area and go out on a Bloater hunt or wait until someone in your group is sick, eventually time will pass and the person will become gravely ill. Meaning they are doomed from then on. The mission will be active and it's pretty simple from then on.

You should unlock this ach in Breakdown, as it is one of the requirements for the Unlock All Heroes ach anyway.
Breakdown Challenge: The Killer - Kill a dying community member at Breakdown level 1 or higher
*You don't have to leave the broken down RV for this to work.
*You can only kill a survivor who is not your friend (you can't play as them)

I recommend starting a new game at level 4 or higher because it makes finding bloaters much easier. You will start with 5 survivors. The hero you chose, Lily, and 3 random survivors. Immediately after spawning (at the broken down RV) look at your community members page by hitting cn_up then cn_RB until you're in the right tab.
Look at the trust level for each survivor (green bar below their name). Lily should be low, random #1 should be a friend, random #2 should be about halfway, and random #3 should be about one-fourth filled. Talk to random #3 and spend your only 100 influence to get them to follow you. Get into a vehicle and run over a bloater so it releases its gas in the car. Do NOT leave the vehicle. This will force the survivor to stay in the car also. After the gas is "done" and it fades away it should say "[Random #3] is heading home." MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE NO MEDICINE RESOURCE AND NO INFIRMARY! If you look at your community member page again it should say Sick: Cough for the survivor that you just poisoned. Stay in-game for a few more minutes until it says Sick: Fever. Now go offline or do something else until tomorrow (real time). For example, if you got the survivor to Fever on Saturday, come back on Sunday. Now it should say Sick: Gravely Ill.

Now there is two scenarios that can occur:

Scenario 1: The survivor is at your base and Lily should give you a call and you should see the "Mercy Shot" mission pop up. Accept the mission, kill the survivor, unlock Alan, and unlock the achievement.

Scenario 2: Survivor is "Away From Home." Hover over their name in the community members tab and press cn_Y to have them check in. Complete the mission "Checking In!" Within a few minutes Lily will call you and give you a mission called "Mercy Shot." Accept the mission, kill the survivor, unlock Alan, and unlock the achievement.

If you can think of any way to make this guide better put it in the comments below! v
Good Luck!

i wish yours was the top solution, because it is the one that helped. I couldnt get mercy shot until i tried your method. I started a new breakdown at level 6, and i intentionally got one of my other team members ripped apart because they were a doctor, then i got my most untrusted ally sick, went to play another game and the next day i came back around 24 hours later and they were gravely ill. screwed around for about 10 minutes running over zombies and then returned home and the mercy shot came up. killed him in the tiny abandoned church in the first area (near the enclave). my final two achievements unlocked.

Hi thanks for your post. I'm going to try this. I am about to enter level four. Do I have to bring five people with me or I am automatically given five other people? Just wanted to be sure. Thanks once again.

If you are going from level 3 to level 4 it should carry your survivors over. If you go straight into level 4 (not by completing level 3) you will be given 3 random people, along with yourself and Lily

Ugh, this is my last achievement I need to complete the base game. I've been trying for DAYS now but this dude I got "gravely ill" keeps going on missions... He's been "away from home" two times now, I check in, he literally disappears again after one second and goes on a mission. This achievement is a pain in the ass if you're unlucky like me. Your solution is way better than the other one tho, so I hope yours becomes the top solution one day. Meanwhile, I'll keep trying roll.

How long do you have to wait for them to become gravely ill? My survivors have fevers and still no option for the mission and I have 0 med, no med infirmary and they’re not my friend.
