How to unlock the The Rescuer achievement in State of Decay: Year-One - Definitive Guide

Original Guide was published here: http://sweatypistol.com/state-of-decay-breakdown-guide-to-un...

This guide is more of a walkthrough on how to effectively and efficiently unlock all of the heroes in Breakdown. Leave a comment below on how I can improve the guide.

*Per II Rich Hobo II you will need to have Lifeline Installed for the 4 Lifeline challenges to show.

Level 1

The Bruiser – Eli Wilkerson – 100 Blunt Weapons Kills

Kill 100 zombies using blunt weapons such as lead pipes, batons, bats, frying pans, etc.

The Cop – Owen Lykins – 50 Pistol Kills

Kill 50 zombies with pistols. You can do this at anytime, but I recommend pairing this with level 4’s The Sniper, as the pistol was my gun of choice to earn headshot streaks.

The Believer – Pastor William Mulroney – Earn 500 Fame

This hero will be unlocked naturally by completing missions, scavenging and returning rucksacks to base.

The Father – Thomas Ritter – Max Out Every Type of Facility

This achievement can also be paired with another achievement: Land Usage. There are two strategies to getting this. The first is making sure you unlock this hero at either level one or two, since the difficulty drastically increases at three. I personally recommend unlocking this hero at level three or four. At level three you can be more efficient by unlocking The Defender, The Biker, The Scholar and The Healer. All three of those heroes require you to craft items, and these items require you to max out certain facilities. If you wait until level four, it will become more difficult, but you can also pair those previous heroes with The Survivor, which requires scavenging 150 resources.

The Dealer – Raymundo Santos – 400 Kills with Car Door

Unlocking this hero will take some time, but it is recommended that you do this either level one or two while vehicles are bountiful. To kill zombies with your car door, press and hold X while you are driving and line up the zombie with the door.

The Scholar – Charley Marshall – Complete All Research Projects

This requires a Library and other upgraded facilities such as a Munitions Shop and Infirmary. Make sure to pair this with The Father, which is detailed above. If you don’t do the research when you have these upgraded facilities, you will be spend twice as much time having to rebuild these facilities.

The Tragedy – Jacob Ritter – Get Torn Apart by Zombies

You most likely will earn this naturally in later levels by having one of your community members be torn apart by either a pack of zombies, a feral or a juggernaut. Note that if your beginning hero is killed, you will lose all current progress.

The Killer – Alan Gunderson – Kill a Dying Community Member

This hero is one of the most difficult to unlock, mainly because there is no cut-and-dry method. You need to get a community injured or sick enough for the Mercy Shot mission to appear. Most forum comments say that you need to have no medicine, no medical facility, no doctor in the community and get a non-friend (a member you cannot switch to) gravely ill before the Mercy Shot mission will appear. My mission appeared finally in level four when I stopped trying to get this because I was more concerned about finishing The Father. I put in about five or six hours into level four and had almost all of my 15 community members sick and three of them were gravely ill, which should be the precursor to the Mercy Shot. I upgraded the medical facility to an infirmary, ended my session for the night, and when I came back in the morning the mission was waiting there for me. The community member was a friend but was not a hero. Now, I can’t say what methods are more accurate, just what has worked for me. If you need to get someone sick, ask them to accompany you and run over two bloaters with your car, and they should become gravely ill shortly after they return. Just make sure they don’t die.

The Sacrifice – Erik Tan – Go Out In A Blaze of Glory

You only need three things: a community member you are willing to sacrifice, a molotov cocktail/grenade and a pack of zombies. Equip the cocktail, go out and find a pack and let them kill your member. Right before you die you should be able to press RB and drop the cocktail, killing the zombies and unlocking this hero.

The Taskmaster – Cpt. Diane Montressor – Play for 10 Hours

Will come naturally by playing.

The Joker -Royell Vincent- Create 10 Snacks

You can do this any time as long as your facility has a cooking area/kitchen. Each time you create snacks, it will take one food resource and five minutes to complete.

Level 2

The Friend – Ed Jones – Reach Level 2

He is unlocked once you repair the RV and decide it is time to leave the valley.

The Phoenix – Becca Collins – 100 Kills with Fire

You can either do this as a standalone or pair it with The Moustache, which is level five and requires you to get 50 kills with a shotgun. If you pair them together, you will need to make sure you find the Cleo Incendiary Shotgun, which can be found at Cleo drops or in the warehouse near the fairgrounds. Use molotov cocktails on hordes if you are doing this as a standalone.

The Enthusiast – Lyanna Carter – 100 Light Edged Weapon Kills

Just kill zombies with hatchets, swords or any other edged weapon. Will happen naturally as you play.

The Dead Man – Andy Pimms – Kill five Bloaters

Requires finding and killing five bloaters. It is not difficult to kill them, it just requires a little bit of patience to find them. The likelihood of bloaters spawning increase as your level increases.

The Hunter – Lincoln Voss – 50 Rifles Kills

Don’t actively go after unlocking this hero until you reach level four. You can double dip as you try to earn The Sniper, which requires 25 headshot streaks. A headshot streak is killing five zombies with headshots in a very quick progression. Try to find hordes as they usually have eight to 10 zombies.

The Mother – Heather LaRue – Cook A Feast

You need a community member with a cooking attribute. I unlocked this in level three with a non-hero NPC character. You will also need a cooking area, five food resource, two influence and it will take 30 minutes.

The Commander – Alicia Hawkes – Complete three Surveys

Look on your map for the binocular icon. These represent survey areas, which are tall buildings that allow you to survey the area. Just climb up to the top, hold LT over each ? and you are done.

Level 3

The Convict – Sam Hoffman – Reach Level 3

Just repair the RV and leave the valley.

The Judge – Judge Constance Lawton – Perform 50 Executions

You perform executions by pressing LB and Y together near a downed zombie. At this point executions are vital to your survival as level 3 increases the difficulty drastically.

The Mentor – Carl Parsons – 50 Revolver Kills

Try to get this along with The Sniper in level four, since you will get at least 125 kills if you are a perfect shot to get The Sniper.

The Fighter – Amelia Crasman – Kill five Ferals

If you get any feral hunt missions, make sure to do them before they expire. I would recommend doing this as soon as possible, as ferals can easily kill your community member in the higher levels.

The Healer – Doc Hanson – Create Stimulants or Painkillers five Times

This is the level I recommended earlier in the guide to get this along with The Father, which is maxing out all the facilities. You will just need extra medicine resource and a fully functional infirmary. Create the stimulants/painkillers five times and this hero is yours.

The Biker – Joel Macon – Create Weapons in the Workshop five Times

Similar to the above, just create a workshop and create five items. I created five suppressors and unlocked this hero.

The Gardener – Calliope Morris – Grow 10 Food in the Garden

Once you’ve created the garden, just grow food 10 times to unlock this hero.

The Defender – Kilohana Young – Craft 300 Rounds of Ammo

You need to get a munitions shop, which is an upgraded workshop. Once you have the munitions shop, I would suggest crafting smaller ammo such as 9mm or .22 to get the highest yield in rounds. It should only take six or so crafts.

Level 4

The Gunner – K.C. Winters – Reach Level 4

Congrats, you’ve just left the valley for a third time.

The Survivor – Job Wilkerson – Scavenge 150 Resources

Clear out buildings and bring back rucksacks of any resources until you reach 150. If you are trying to do this quickly, look for materials since they come in 15 per rucksack.

The Hero – Marcus Campbell – 100 Heavy Weapon Kills

This can be done with weapons like the shovel or sledgehammer. Just make sure you do it 100 times to unlock this hero.

The Rebel – Zeika Rivera – 50 Assault Rifle Kills

Just choose your favorite assault rifle and head out hunting some zombies.

The Sniper – Mickey Wilkerson – Earn 25 Headshot Streaks

As I’ve detailed in previous portions of this guide, this will be one of the more frustrating heroes to unlock. You need to kill five zombies in quick progression, all with headshots and without missing. You will have numerous times where you get four and then miss or are then attacked. The only really good tip I can give you is to try to get alert hordes and have a suppressor on your gun. This will allow you to get the headshots without alerting other close zombies. Other zombies attacking you from behind while you try to get the streaks is the worst.

The Grenadier – Evan Woodrow – 50 Explosives Kills

I used the grenade launcher to unlock this hero and just drove around finding hordes, which will net you about six-to-eight per shot. You can also kill zombies by shooting propane tanks that are near them. This will also unlock The Bruce, if you can get three of them near the tank.

The Operator – Kelly Eldridge III – Kill 10 Screamers

Screamers are so common in level four that I unlocked The Operator in about half an hour of driving around. You shouldn’t have any issue if you’ve made it to level 4.

Level 5

The Veteran – Maya Torres – Reach Level 5

Congratulations, you are only one more level from finishing this achievement.

The Moustache – Dan Hovenden – 50 Shotgun Kills

Level 5 can be very tough and requires you to live long enough to get more members in your community or you will lose right away. I took Kelly Eldridge with almost completely maxed stats and I struggled early on. Once you have some more members and have yet to move to a stationary home, get your shotgun and start killing zombies near the RV. This will give you backup, as shooting your shotgun will attract hundreds of zombies. Make sure you are stocked on painkillers and shotgun shells and this hero is yours.

The Mercenary – Leon Montague – Kill five Juggernauts

Killing juggernauts is easy when you have vehicles. The big issue is that vehicles are few and far between. If you are going to kill juggernauts with your vehicle, make sure to have lots of snacks as you will be doing lots of running or risk losing your community member. Try to drive around until you find a juggernaut near another unused vehicle.

The Ninja – Shark Hoodie Guy – Perform 50 Stealth Kills

This takes a lot of patience, and I mean a lot. You will often be very close to earning a stealth kill when another zombie gives you away. Don’t give up, just make sure you are swinging extra wide for good measure when sneaking up on your undead foes.

Level 6

The Scientist – Walter DeGrasse – Reach Level Six

You are finally done! Well, if you were just trying to get the achievement. If not, you can continue basically forever or until you are ready for a new challenge.

Hey Nuclear Blast78. Me too. I have unlocked all characters apart from that one and the achievement has not popped. Does anyone know if that is required?

Do you keep the characters you unlocked for good or if you start a new game to they reset?

If you want to start with a completely new hero, you will be able to select any hero that has been unlocked. If you are moving up to the next level you don't bring everyone with you.

Do you know if "the Gardener" is bugged? I've been sitting here in level 3 for two real-time days with a greenhouse and a second garden, but I'm still stuck at 8/10 food grown. I go into my journal and it says I'm producing at least 9 food per day at the greenhouse, but the challenge isn't progressing. Should I just move on and hope to get it next level?

The gardener is earned by performing the action to create food in the garden, not by the food that is added to your supplies. I hope that helps @spelunkie

I don't have any actions in my gardens except upgrade to greenhouse. Do you mean create snacks in the cooking area? Because I've done that and it doesn't work. I moved on to level 4 of Breakdown, I set up a greenhouse and two other gardens, but I'm still not getting anywhere. I'm stuck at 3/10 food. I'm sorry to be botherin' but the internet doesn't have an answer for this. Do you remember just having to wait for it?

You are correct I loaded it back up and it is jus how much the greenhouse produces. I think I got this naturally. I'm seeing other people having issues on Steam, but nothing on X1. I'm going to look into it again on my wife's profile and see how much time it takes.

Do you need to actually escort them back to base? Or once you complete the challenge the hero is unlocked? I'm kind of in the process of this. I just hit Level 6, but I missed a few easier ones on like level's 1-5. So I'm going to start over again to snag them when there aren't as many zombies on the damned map.

You don't need to bring them back to base. Once you've met the requirements and the badge is earned there is nothing more you need to do.

For anyone who is thinking they can just do this achievement on the 360 and import it over will be fairly wrong as the one edition has added 4 new challenges (they are fairly simple, but doing shit in breakdown 6 isn't) I did not know and it really pissed me off to putting in 6 more hours. It is these characters as follows: The Joker, The Commander, The Defender, and The Operator. Get to Breakdown 5 on 360 import over to one and do all these challenges and then move over to 360 and finish up.

Dumb question but do the Challenges Reset if you start a NEW Game? Or does this have to be done in 1 run??
0
0
By EricGarcia4 on 19 Jan 2016 01:04
Not a dumb question. It does not have to become in one run. Once you've unlocked a hero it counts and you can start a new game if you would like.

Why is this flagged as missable?
0
0
By Mr Fiddler on 24 Jan 2016 23:59
I think because you can technically miss this and still complete Breakdown levels.
0
0
By pistol09pete on 25 Jan 2016 00:32
Ok, fair enough. That flag just gave me the impression that you had to do all of this in one run which would seem pretty daunting. Might be worth adding that to the solution itself rather than having to find it in the comments.

Am I right in thinking you can start a new breakdown game at whatever level you've already reached? That is, should you totally fail at a certain level can you just restart there again?
0
0
By Mr Fiddler on 02 Mar 2016 02:39
That is correct. I started level 5 again after I failed my initial level 5. As long as you've unlocked the character it counts doesn't matter playthrough.

The Dealer is only 100 kills with a car door, not 400.

For, The Ninja, for an easier time with stealth kills you can use the spin kick from a reflex character to knock a zombie down. Face the head side (will be behind it when it trys to get up. Crouch. then stealth kill it. Counts towards this challenge and is pretty easy to do. Having a guy at max wits with the ninja perk also helps as you can fast move while crouching.

For The Biker, making suppressors doesn't seem to progress the meter. Wasted a fair amount of time doing that before realizing! :( Making a Flame Fougasse works though.

I personally didn't need the trucks at this point as I just needed to kill the juggernauts before moving to Level 6 and finishing this achievement. I didn't lose any heroes and it took me 10-15 minutes to kill 5 juggernauts. It worked for my playstyle, but the main thing is getting those kills, so however you see fit.

By pistol09pete on 26 Jun 2016 13:49
Ah gotcha. Agree on play style point there too. An assault rifle on 3 round burst also wrecks juggernauts with headshots too.

I'm having a really hard time getting alan gunderson. Can I complete every other challenge except his mercy shot one then start a new game to unlock the last survivor and still get the achievement or does it all have to be in one game/save? Does starting a new game in breakdown overwrite previous save/progress?

Starting a new game does not remove any heroes you've unlocked. Once they've been unlocked you can use them as your starting hero. I unlocked all heroes in 2 different playthroughs.

It took me a couple months to unlock The Killer – Alan Gunderson. The only thing that worked was calling for new survivors through the radio (always 2 survivors, one is a friend and the other isnt) and getting them infected by a bloater before arriving at the base. In 30 minutes the non friend character activated the mission. I repeated the process 3 more times (base without meds, docs and labs) and it worked like a charm.

QUESTION: Is there a list so we can know if we have unlocked each hero?

QUESTION: If we can play as one of the heroes, is it ok if a hero dies? (I think I got the Pastor killed.)
0
0
By E vee dub on 07 May 2018 08:59
Answer 1. Yes I believe its in the "notebook menu"

I will boot up my game to see exactly how to find it.....

Answer 2. If you earned that hero and picked him (or her) up and brought them back to base, then they are officially unlocked and they can die later so don't worry, it still counts.

Better answer for question 1: In game press D-pad "up" for your "notebook", press RB 5 times to get to the "badge icon" and you can scroll down to see who you have or don't have.......heroes you obtained will have a green check mark on the upper right hand side of their "badge"

Please note: if you see a "stop sign" icon with a number, it just means you are in too low of a breakdown level to try and unlock him or her (the number represents what level of Breakdown you need to be on.......

Then that raises more questions.
QUESTION: At what Breakdown level can we see the list of heroes?
QUESTION: I unlocked a hero at Breakdown level 1. What if that hero dies before the list appears? Will it be saved/counted at later Breakdown levels?
QUESTION: Do my efforts carry over when I increase Breakdown Level? i.e. Kills with a car door.
QUESTION: Should we take heroes with us on the RV?

I've unlocked a hero (maybe 2) and I'm only Breakdown level 1 and there's no list on the CHALLENGES tab.

Guide writer,
How did you get the "MERCY SHOT" mission 'finally' at level 4 if it's a Breakdown Level 1 challenge?
Can the challenges be completed at later Breakdown levels?
I heard the challenges reset when you increase Breakdown Level. Is that true?
If the challenges reset, then why bother with Heroes early?

This game leaves a lot of uncertainty as you play.

By E vee dub on 10 May 2018 02:15
Yup. I finally see that any challenges can be completed during any one Breakdown, but some challenges can't be attempted until you reach a certain Breakdown.
And any incomplete challenges restart from the beginning once a new Breakdown level is started.
And the player has control when to start the next Breakdown by choosing to take the RV ride, with chosen survivors.

I appreciate the responses. Well done.

Now I realize how it works and when to move up to the next level.
Right now I have 10/11 facities fully researched, but I can't get the materials needed because I exhausted them all. I was wondering why my tower could no longer see them on the map. Looks like it's best if I move to Breakdown 2 and start over. Luckily, increasing facility levels are needed anyway.

I'm glad I worked all this out in Breakdown 1 so I should be more efficient in future levels.

The challenges tab IS the list of heroes. Completing each challenge unlocks a hero, thus the name of each challenge.

There is another way to see your list of heroes.

From the start menu choose:
-A Play Breakdown
-Start A New Game
-Yes (this will not overwrite your game yet)
Choose You Hero... there's your list with pictures.

If at this point you hit A, it will overwrite your game.

If you've unlocked this one the 360 here's what you need after save transfer to unlock this: Start breakdown go to the Alamo in east Marshall, its a Mexican restaurant. Set up here and get used to it. Keep doing the missions, finding and repairing the RV as fast as you can, your goal is to get to breakdown level 3. Once there get established at the Alamo. use the prebuilt kitchen and start making snacks, you need to do this four times. Start building a library and workshop, then upgrading the workshop twice into a munitions shop. Once the library is complete you need to research ammo crafting, I needed four hours for this and could not craft ammo before doing this. Craft the ammo until you unlock this hero. If you haven't been using survey points you need to do this three times. Once you've done 3 surveys, crafted 10 snacks and 300 ammo take he RV to breakdown level 4. Now just kill 10 screamers, you can locate them pretty quickly by surveying or just driving around.

For anyone struggling with the mother challenge I can help. So like me you maybe spend hours and hours maxing out the rep for settlements so you can recruit them in hopes that you will find someone who can cook you a feast, instead what to do it just start a new game with any hero on breakdown 2 of course, you will start with 3 random survivors just keep restarting a new game on breakdown 2 until you have someone with the cooking skill! I really struggled with this so hopefully it helps someone.

Hey bro, I just got it somehow. The challenge seems bugged because I have no idea why it just worked now. After not being able to complete it in levels 3, 4, and 5, I just skipped to level 6 and exited the game. I started a new breakdown at level 3 and set up shop at the Alamo. I built two gardens, exited the game, and went to sleep. When I woke up the Gardens had been built but I had not progressed the hero challenge at all. I turned the game off again and came back to it a couple times over the day with still no progression. But I turned the game on ten minutes ago and the challenge had finished. Idk what happened, but thanks for the help anyway man!

The much better and easier way to kill Juggernauts is to use fire, since molotovs are plentiful. 5 or so will burn it to death. You can also throw really any explosive at it. Or plant a line of mines or flame fougasses, whistling box mines, whatever, and aggro them into the line. Or a very large rifle with a supressor and a few headshots.

Using vehicles is terrible as its been an instant tire explosion when you hit a juggernaut for a while now. I mean there is absolutely nothing wrong with hitting them two or three times with a spare vehicle that happens to be close by, but dont go wasting trucks on them and trying to drive on rims when molotovs are basically free. Your vehicle will explode before you run a Juggernaut into the ground.

all the solutions for The Sniper make it way harder to get than it is. Its actually *EASY* to get. All you need is a maxed shooting stat and a semi-auto gun (or a full auto set to 1 shot). You can aggro a horde or kite shambling zombies until you have 5. The game will auto aim at the zombies head with cn_LT if you're close enough. It'll adjust aim for you as long as you keep pressing it.

the only problem I kept running into was the game being an asshole and spawning several zombies out of nowhere right behind me.

Answer 1) You can see the list at the very beginning of the game, the list is always there...
Answer 2) If you unlocked a hero, it still counts, you will always have that hero unlocked from now on, as I stated, the list is always there
Answer 3) No, totals do not carry over, they have to be done on the same breakdown level.
Answer 4) You can if you want, if the hero you unlocked get "left behind" or dies, the hero STAYS unlocked for good

As for the question aimed at the "guide writer", I believe you can unlock early level heroes at later levels, but not the other way around. Let me give you an example, you can unlock a level 1 hero at breakdown level 5, BUT......... you can't unlock a level 5 hero at lets say, level 2......

Can the challenges be completed at later Breakdown levels?

Yes, but you have to completely start AND finish the whole challenge!

I heard the challenges reset when you increase Breakdown Level. Is that true?

Yes, I explained that in answer 3, if you unlock a hero, you no longer have to redo that hero's challenge.

Let me give you a great example: Level 1) The Bruiser – Eli Wilkerson – 100 Blunt Weapons Kills......all 100 blunt weapon kills MUST be done on the same level (whether its level 1, or even level 4) but you can't do 60 kills in level 1, then 40 in level 2, that is what it means when it resets...if you have only 60 blunt kills in level 1, then leave to level 2, just those 60 kills gets RESET, meaning you have to start over in level 2, and get ALL 100 kills in one level!!!

You see, I think you are confused that you think your completed hero's challenges reset, and you have to do them all over again.....NO, THEY DON'T!!!! Once you complete the challenge and you unlock the hero BY GETTING THE CALL FROM LILY AND BRING THE HERO BACK TO BASE, you are done with that hero's challenge for good!!! You keep that hero for the rest of the game!! So, lets say you completed 100 blunt weapon kills, got the call from Lily, and picked up Eli, and brought him back to base. You will never have to worry about doing anymore 100 blunt kills EVER again!!!

TLTR: Completed hero challenges don't reset, incomplete ones do........

If the challenges reset, then why bother with Heroes early?

I believe I answered that question in perfect detail above........

Hi everyone, if you’re like me and only had problems with the one challenge “the killer” I have a very simple solution that is guaranteed to work.

For mercy shot (the killer) - go offline and start up a level at breakdown 5. Do not move into any facilities, stick with the RV.

Gather enough influence to get one of your followers to accompany you, once they’re following you - get into a car with them and run over 2-3 bloaters. Eventually you will get a message saying “*character name* it’s time to go home”. This means that character is now sick. Drive them back to the RV.

Back out to the main menu and switch your day forward by one day via the Xbox settings.

Repeat this process until follower is “gravely ill.” Continue setting day forward by one day until illness spreads to other survivors. The goal is to get someone who is tagged as not a friend to become gravely ill.

Once a follower who is not your friend is gravely ill, complete missions that the radio operator assigns you. Make sure that the follower is at the RV by checking the roster and seeing the “at home” status when completing missions. If follower is not at home simply press “check in” and go retrieve them to make them return to RV.

Eventually, a mercy kill mission will appear. Mine popped up almost immediately after checking in with another follower and telling them to return home. The most important part is to make sure that the follower you want to mercy kill is at home and not away from home when completing missions. This gives the mercy kill mission the highest probability of spawning.

Good luck, hope this helps

Finally got this damn achievement after trying forever and holding off. Can confirm this is the best way to go about doing this one. You will have to make your Xbox your home xbox to play offline/skip time.

I started a new game on level 1 breakdown (With Kelly Eldridge III). Moved into the Kirkman Residence. Did the initial survey mission, called for other survivors via lilly and didn't do a damn thing to my base. No building, no clearing the base rooms up, nothing. I went to the RV when I got the mission just to clear mission space and did like 1 mission for my neighbors. Lily gave me a heads up about 2 survivors looking for a home. I threw 3 firebombs at them and drove into 3 bloaters. They got sick. Skipped the clock 6 hours a few times and they got gravely ill (Make sure to close the game first). For some reason the one of them got cured (I had no meds in base at all not even any meds to heal like ibuprofen) and they still somehow became my "Friend". I did 1 mission every time I skipped the clock 6 hours. Low and behold after doing a zed hunt mission a mercy shot mission appeared instantly. The guy I recruited (Royell "Vince" Vincent, though It doesn't matter who just who I had) who is a "hero" was the one I had to mercy kill. So I can confirm with absolute certainty the mercy shot mission will eventually pop with someone who is a "Hero" or "Friend".
