How to unlock the Interstellar Performance achievement in SteamWorld Build - Definitive Guide
Not a full guide as such, but a couple of tips I picked up along the way.
As Mike points out, Hard is labeled as Difficult in game.
1. I'd fully recommend doing this as a 3rd play through, after Story and then a No Turrets run.
This gets you used to how the game runs and how to do your building layouts.
2. Do them across 2 maps, as you earn unique bonus buildings. The most important one is the 'free road and conveyors' which makes lower levels of the mine so much easier.
3. When do your town, do it as 2 halves. Have houses on one side, going up in tier of citizen. So 3 rows, with regular connections, and service buildings in the middle.
Then have your production buildings off on the other half of the map, and just go crazy with warehouses, they're cheap and no reason not to.
I never felt I was running out of space, but I did pack stuff in quite close.
4. Don't build more scientist houses than you need, as you need 100% satisfaction to manufacture rocket fuel.
Stick with aristobots for the boosted taxes.
5.Finally! Take it slow on the mines, as you reach spawn points make sure to build defences at each before moving to the next. I had around 20/25 guards per level. Teleporters are also your friends down here, from the main area to each spawn.
Hope this helps!

The highest difficulty I see is "Difficult" not hard, are they the same thing?

I played through all (currently 5) maps getting the special item building for each one. Just play through these on easy.
Once you have them all try to place them all early on in the game (around when you repair the train station). The perks these give you will make the had difficulty 10x easier.
Then I just made sure that when I cam across a hive, I had:
3 grenade launchers
1 lightning turret
25 guards
^^^ this is especially important for the bottom tier of the mine
Then finally make sure you aren't building anything unnecessary and take your time. Only mine small sections to avoid collapsing the roof, and build a lot of workers early on as its simpler to just upgrade them later than to constantly be building new ones.
Finally I made sure i was positive 200 of each citizen class before I began upgrading a load for the next one.
Hope this helps, this is what worked for me.
