After beating the game you will get a rating on various things, including wealth. This is the total earned in the game, not how much money you finish with.
I am not sure the exact amount needed for Gold, but I had just over £20,000 after buying all upgrades at the bench. If you don't have enough for gold after the ending, you can load up the save, grind some more money and finish the final boss again.

A good place to farm kills is Leaky Lodge cave, found near the "Beneath the Acid Swamp" tibe. or deep in the temple of the destroyer you can find the magic cultists. but they spawn less
