You get xp from killing enemies and completing missions. The first pickaxe cog upgrade should be a priority at the start, giving you 30 xp per beetle kill instead of 20. It actually helps a lot with leveling in the beginning. Otherwise just try to kill every enemy you come across while completing missions.
