All you need to do is pick up the silver. You are free to sell, discard, or even lose them by dying after picking them up. There is a cog upgrade that gives a chance at two resources per node, so I'd equip it asap. You should start seeing silver around the time you get to Oasis, with a lot of it being in the Eastern Temple of the Destroyer.
