The best way I found to do this is use flame grenades on enemies. Make sure they actually ignite (catch fire). If you have a weapon that has fire damage you can use that as well but again just make sure the enemy ignites. 1.) Weapons with the "invocation of fire" special move or a ranged attack that fire a flame shot.
The earliest you can find a weapon that can inflict fire is in Les Invalides (main story-path to find Mr Vaucanson) and it is called the Fire Chain. In my opinion this is one of the best weapons in the game and does alot of damage if you upgrade it. Just be aware that it'll be a little harder to inflict the fire status with this weapon on bigger Automats (e.g. Hoplites, Rams, Lancers) and Bosses as they have more defenses and will attack you more often causing you to dodge/block/parry which slows the fire build-up. Another weapon you'll find a little later that can infuse the weapon with fire when pressing L2 is the Hephaestus Batons which you'll find in La Cité. However, this is not an ideal weapon to use for those who went for the Bodyguard or Soldier class as the batons are designed for a build with higher Agility to help build up immobilisation and combos faster.
2.) Flame grenades are obviously very good for igniting the Automats on fire, with smaller more basic enemies only needing 1 - 2 to be ignited, and bigger enemies needing anywhere from 3 - 5. The one downside to this method is that you won't unlock this skill till a little later in the story when you visit Luxembourg.
