How to unlock the Definition of courage achievement in Strange Brigade - Definitive Guide
To begin, you only need to play through the original campaign. The new DLC campaigns are not required to obtain this achievement. What makes Extreme different is more enemies, enemies have more life and you take more damage. You get checkpoints just like you did before you do not need to restart the level or game upon failing.
Also it may be beneficial to note that you do not need to the host to obtain this achievement like some others. Therefore, do not be afraid to jump into others on their journey. Thanks to Alberto Silva76 for confirming this.
Update
A couple people have brought it to my attention that it is possible to exploit the difficulty system in this game. It is possible to play through each mission on Easy difficulty, back out to the lobby before completing each level, then changing the difficulty to Extreme. After you launch the game and complete the final checkpoint of the level you should receive credit for completing the entire level on Extreme. You will of course have to beat the final checkpoint of each level in Extreme mode. There are at least two users so far that confirm this method works. Thanks to Poia for first mentioning this.
1.) Full Party
I might get negatives for this, but play with more people. It makes this go much easier. I played with one other friend and acquired two randoms that played through the entire game with us. Please note you also need to adjust the seats of your lobby so that "everyone can join" if you would like randoms to join. Also just as mentioned by Alberto Silva76 it makes certain enemies much easier. There are certain ones that can only be damaged from behind and will prove more difficult on solo.
2.) Champion of Seteki
These are the charging bulls and are definitely the most irritating enemy. They take a significant amount of health when you are hit and kill you in one hit if you are already weak. Also they can take much abuse before going down. There is a really good method to avoid them though. When they are coming at you move directly toward them and dodge/roll into them off to the left or right. This makes them much easier to dodge.
3.) Potions
Try to keep one of these on you at all times and do not use it. You only use it to self revive from a sarcophagus if your other teammates all die or cannot make it to you. It really helps. Also you are completely immune to all damage upon getting revived for a short time. Abuse this to try and revive another player or get to safety. Also the cool down on your grenade is immediate upon being revived. So in a tight spot your goal should to first revive any incapacitated teammates and the next is to chuck your grenade.
4.) Ammit
This is the giant dragon/alligator thing that Seteki summons. It is a true pain, especially the second time you fight it. Fortunately, you can easily 'cheese' it. Just have each party member purchase a power weapon from the crate. Then in this one instance heal before going into the battle. Right from the start unload whatever weapon you got on Ammit's face. Try to also split up so if it attacks it does not kill all of you. We defeated Ammit this way in less than fifteen seconds.
5.) Setup
I personally like Gracie as my character with the 'Raging Bull' special. You take much less damage while in this mode and many times you can refill your special meter while clobbering enemies. For grenades I personally go with anything explosive and like the new cluster grenade most. I also like a sniper rifle for range and overall damage but that is just me.
6.) Priorities
If you coordinate it with your other teammates you can literally run through entire sections of enemies. This helps a great deal because of the time it can take to clear areas out before moving forward. In my opinion you should try to avoid collectibles and bonus areas as much as possible during this run. Thanks to o0EviIToaster0o for mentioning this.
7.) Runes
I recommend selecting a firearm that has at least three utility slots for runes. You can select whatever you feel will be most effective for that particular firearm. However, I like to have fire or ice in at least one slot. If everyone in your lobby has firearms full of runes you will obviously have a significant advantage. Thanks to Alberto Silva76 for mentioning this.
If you do not have many runes to spare please refer to this short video to learn to farm. You can have a handful of runes in just a few minutes using this method. Taking a few minutes to get runes to go into a firearm your like using will be very worth it. All credit goes to The Game Attendant for uploading this farming method.
1 The Champion of Seteki (charging minotaur) seems to cause more problems than any other enemy. Learn to dodge the charge attack, which is not difficult. As mentioned in the solution, facing it, and then rolling out of its path, is easiest. Its able to u-turn surprisingly well, so being at angles can get you killed. You might dodge the first pass, and then be hit on the second while you're recovering from a roll.
You'll often face two at a time, which are much more difficult to elude. Divide and conquer. One agile player is enough to lure this enemy away and keep it busy, allowing the team to focus on and kill the other. I recommend leading it away from respawn points because of how vulnerable players are while resurrecting team mates.
2 I found the decoy grenade to be the most valuable explosive. It lures most enemies away. Once they notice it, they will entirely ignore players until it explodes. Use it to lure large groups of monsters to traps, or to give yourself time to resurrect team mates. It helped me easily complete the Great Pyramid alone on extreme. I used this bomb just before having to shoot the four buttons on the pillars surrounding the boss, which gave me time and space to focus on aiming.
If you are talking about the next area that is a little bit like a Colosseum with large pillars we had four people. I remember spamming the strategy I mentioned for reviving teammates and chucking your grenade. You get your grenade back as you are getting revived. You can throw it and revive your teammate or vice versa. Just as Vito84 said you can buy a power weapon too to try and make it easier. Some of them are very helpful. Specifically, the blunderbuss, flamethrower and shotgun power weapons are good here.
Play every level on easy. Upon reaching the boss fight in every level, wait for the checkpoint to pop up, then press start and back out to lobby. Change difficulty to extreme and continue from last checkpoint. You still need to do all 9 bossfights on extreme but it still saves a lot of effort. You know it has worked when you get a star on the level you completed on the map in the main menu.
The rest of the missions are relatively affordable, you can die 5-6-7 times but in the end you win.
My first recommendation is to do it alone, it is easier to have controlled the bulls. The enemies are configured with the number of players, for example if there are 2 bulls you do not know where they come from and they easily kill you.
Next I explain step by step what you should do:
Before entering the arena:
1. Before reaching the arena you must equip with a flamethrower (it is the best weapon against the bulls, with 2 maximum attacks is dead)
2. Equate with the decoy grenade, and / or with the ability to create a double (only a character can do it), or with the ability to bring allies.
3. You must start with the maximum life and a healing potion (recommendation).
In the arena and before activating the mission / or at the beginning of the battle:
1. Open the chests and do not take the special weapons (you already have a flamethrower if you followed the steps)
2. You must always control where the healing potions are.
In the battle before the bulls appear:
1. Use the traps are very useful, you can fool the enemies with the grenade decoy near one and then activate it.
2. Once activated a decoy grenade focus on killing dangerous enemies, zombies and skeletons are not rivals for you and are slow.
3. Run around constantly, attacks of a few seconds and continuous running.
4. Do not worry, nor take the time to kill the archers and the fire bombers. It is not necessary and unfortunately they regenerate (A friend has sent me a message informing me that archers and bomb throwers do not regenerate, so this point remains to be confirmed). Of all forms, although it is much better and facilitates the work is not necessary.
update of point 4
I have made several tests and I verify that if you kill all the archers they regenerate again, same with the enemies that shoot fire bombs. But if you leave 1 alive, they do not regenerate.
This point is very important with the bomb throwers (the archers are not so dangerous), killing only 1 grenadier the battle is much easier.
After killing him you can fight near the wall where it is located, it is a blind spot for him, and he will throw you few bombs because he has no vision
In the battle the bulls appear:
1. Throw the decoy grenade away from the bull, if you still do not have it, you move away and avoid the necessary time. Always control the position of the bull, run with the back view to always control your position and always face it in front (ALWAYS FROM FRONT).
2. Once the rest of the enemies go to the decoy, dodge and kill it. Do not get too far from the bull, so in a few seconds it will load and you can empty the amuniton of your weapon against it.
3. Aim at the head of the bull.
You kill the bull:
1. Shoot the nucleus quickly, walking towards the center (it's very easy). It's much better than going around the perimeter.
2. If you already have a decoy grenade, launch it and it will still be easier.
Other tips
1. Go around the perimeter to regenerate your health a little (you can only regenerate 10% but it is very good for small attacks)
2. Go around the perimeter in the same direction, avoid the bombs and arrows.
3. Control the pumps, if you see a pump on the screen, quickly do a somersault. When you do a somersault you are almost indestructible
4. If you collect ammunition, special weapons or healing potions, immediately after doing a somersault (it seems silly, but you avoid attacks)
5. Do not open and collect at the same time special weapons, you are too exposed. First open the chest and then later pick up the weapon.
6. At the beginning of the wave try to annihilate the maximum number of enemies, use traps and more traps.
Super useful advice (remember always, always and always), when you are dead:
1. Throw the decoy grenade far away.
2. Take another first aid kit.
3. Whenever you resuscitate to the right near the wall a zombie appears with 1 first aid kit, kill it and take the first aid kit. Take advantage of the time of the decoy grenade.
4. When you go around, remember where the medicine cabinets are.
These tips help, but you must try several times until you win.
Before following this method it was hell, I tried it 20-30 times alone, and with mates 10-15 times. Later with these tips it was easier, every 3-5 times it won.
Note. I hope you help my advice.
I did not use a flamethrower or any special weapons really, however switching to the Gehrig-Delgane S1 really helped. Use the health, brutality, armourbane and quickfire gems (credit goes to a guide I saw on Steam). Amulets I don't think help as much, although the one I saw recommended was desert mirage as its decoy ability works on the bulls (decoy grenades don't).
The key is to keep moving and "train" the horde, similar to what you'd do in COD zombies. Focus on enemies that rush you or can attack from a distance. Kill enemies above you on the right and left hand side as soon as they spawn. When the bulls appear, always keep them in your line of sight and focus on killing them. Rolling towards them to avoid damage is essential.
Overall it's a very difficult fight but I was able to beat it after practicing and only needed one health potion. Good luck.
To play on this difficulty, at the main menu (where your character is standing), press to select a level (you might need to press after that if you selected anything other than Campaign at the previous screen). On that screen, press again to select the difficulty (Extreme is represented by three skulls with a bullet shooting through them). Move or to select it, move down to 'Apply' then press (make sure 'Enemy Count' is set to 'Default'). Select a level and you're ready to go! Note that the achievement does unlock for all players present provided that they have completed each level on Extreme.
This difficulty isn't as bad as some of the harder difficulties in other games, although it can still be relentless. As you increase the difficulty on this game, there are more enemies, the enemies take more damage to kill and they hit harder, so you lose health quicker. Extreme difficulty is no different.
It is recommended that you play with a full squad of four experienced players for this and that each player plays with a character, weapon and amulet they're comfortable with. An upgraded weapon, especially on the later levels, is a must. Experiment with different gems to see which is most beneficial to your play style. Playing solo on this difficulty shouldn’t even be considered.
Fortunately, there are still normal checkpoints so if your entire squad dies, you start at the last checkpoint, not the beginning of the level, or worse, the beginning of the game.
The game does keep track of your progress on which levels you've completed on Extreme. At the main menu on the level select screen, if the icon has a star in the orange diamond, you've completed it on Extreme. Another thing to note is that the DLC levels are not required to unlock this achievement; only the original 9 levels need to be completed.
Here are some general tips for playing on harder difficulties:
- Always carry an extra potion if possible: The game is pretty liberal when it comes to withstanding damage but many enemies can kill you with one hit on this difficulty, even if you have a full health bar. If you have a potion, you can last that much longer. Use them sparingly as they are not in abundance. Of note, if you’ve gone down but have a potion, it is recommended that you do not use it to get out of the sarcophagus unless it is absolutely necessary. Always let another player revive you unless there's no way they can get to you.
- Dodge: If you find yourself being overwhelmed, simply press to dodge to a safer area. That will give you time to recover and find some ammo if needed. Use this technique especially when fighting the charging Champions of Seteki (bulls).
- Ammo: The game has ammo caches all over the place, and there is almost always one or two when fighting in a standoff area. Don’t let yourself be caught running out of ammo!
- Teammates: You’ll find the game much more enjoyable and satisfying if you play with other people. Have each player be a different character so you can utilize their abilities better. Working as a team will benefit everyone. For example, hoarding soul gathering so you can always have a full amulet will not help your teammates.
- Upgrade: I’ll say it again, it is recommended that you upgrade your weapons as soon as you can to fit your play style. You will deal more damage, restore health with every kill or numerous other benefits if you choose the right gems.
- Play smart: Even when playing with four players, this difficulty can be ruthless. Teamwork is key.
Difficulty Exploit:
There is an exploit you can utilize if you are having trouble surviving the entire level on Extreme. This method is not endorsed by XBA whatsoever so use at your own risk. This was working as of February 21, 2019.
The method is simple; play through the level on a lower difficulty and then when the game has reached the final checkpoint (usually at the boss/final battle of the level), press and 'Go to Lobby'. From there, press to access the level select screen and press again to change the difficulty to Extreme. Move down to 'Apply' and press then again to confirm and you will return to the lobby. Now select 'Continue' and you will load into the level at the last checkpoint on Extreme. You then need to complete the level on this difficulty. Repeat as necessary until this achievement unlocks.
You still have to deal with every boss on extreme mode but at least getting there is painless.
- The Thrice Damned DLCs are not needed for this trophy.
- To make life easier from the start, make sure you leave the "Enemy Count" option on Default so the enemies scale to the number of players.
- This trophy will unlock for everyone if you play in Co-Op (credit to Malechen for confirming this).
Differences between Extreme and the other difficulties:
- Enemies hit harder and the bosses/mini-bosses are bullet sponges that a lot of hit to kill, plus some can kill you in 1 hit.
- Health potions are rarer in general and the Potion carrying zombies in particular, appear less often.
- There are more enemies per-area.
- Certain Puzzle solutions are more complicated on Extreme, compared to the lower difficulties.
Extreme difficulty is no joke but by using the following tips, you shouldn't have too many problems:
Get the Platinum: By getting the , you will not only get to know the various enemies in the game and learn the best ways to counter them but will also have all the weapons and amulets unlocked and fully upgraded.
Pick the character that plays to your strengths: Each character has traits that make them more powerful, depending on how you play e.g. Nalangu can run and aim faster, Gracie makes explosives more powerful and her fists hit harder, Prof. Archimedes can suck up souls from a wider radius and open ancient alcoves etc. etc. so pick the one you get the best results with. Each character also has 4 different Amulets available so take those into consideration as well.
Shotguns rule!: Shotguns are by far the best weapons in the game but the AB Woolf Slamfire is hands down the best of the bunch, because it has a large ammo capacity and rapid fire (as fast as you can pull the trigger). Most non-boss enemies will die from a single headshot if your aim is good enough but even the tougher ones will only take about 3 hits if all your shots land on target.
Dodge is your friend: Your Dodge move (press whilst moving the in any direction) will save your neck if used correctly so don't be afraid to use it if you need to shake off an enemy or avoid incoming fire. Dodging is especially important when facing off against a boss or mini-boss, because they can kill you in 1-2 hits if they touch you.
Use the DLC Grenades if you have them: The DLC Grenades (Glacier Bomb, Shock Grenade and Cluster Grenade) are the best ones in the game and can make life easier if you have them but if you don't, then use either the standard or Decoy Grenades.
Phone a friend: As and when you get stuck, don't be afraid to ask for help and either post in the boosting thread here: LINK or look in the Server Browser and see if anyone is playing the same mission you are, then tag along with them. Do note that Co-Op will make life easier overall but also double the amount enemies and how much damage they take to kill. The hardest missions are the Forsaken City and the Great Pyramid, thus it is strongly recommended you play in Co-Op if at all possible.
Be aware of your surroundings: There's no faster way to die in this game than by being blind to what’s going on around you, e.g. you focus so much on what's going on in front of you, that you get killed by a sniper who hiding on the ledge above you. Knowing the locations of traps, health and explosive barrels/jars can save your life so make a mental note of where they are. It also pays to know where the Sarcophagi are so you can quickly reach them if your friend(s) need(s) rescuing. Using traps at the right time can make a big difference to a major battle so wait until the enemies are bunched up on/next to a trap, then shoot the activation node and watch the limbs fly!
Don't get frustrated: The worst thing you can do in this game is getting frustrated because it will cloud your judgement and make you do silly things. If things start to get under your skin, do yourself a favour and quit the game for a few hours until you have calmed down a bit and are thinking more clearly. You can lessen your frustration a tad by skipping all the cutscenes so you avoid seeing the same ones over and over again.
Know your foe: The 3 enemies that will kill you the most often, are the Guardians (AKA Mini-Bosses), Revenants (all types) and the sniper dudes that fire timed delayed explosive balls at you. You can make life a little easier by equipping the Ice Gale Gem, Quickfire Gem, Brutal Gem and Skull Breaker Gem on your AB Woolf Slamfire and one of your choice on your Sidearm. The Healing Gem sounds like a good idea but you get so little health back, it's completely negated by the amount of damage you take. For the final boss, it is strongly recommended you use either the Lee Ensham MkIII Rifle from the main game or the Gehrig-Delgane S1 Rifle (if you have the Secret Service Weapons Pack DLC installed) so you can take pot shots at them and not have to worry too much about being hit by their attacks. The best way to kill enemies that are above you (e.g. snipers) is to hit them with a well placed Grenade but if there are explosive barrels or jars nearby, hit them instead.
Don't be a Scrooge: You will find tons of cash throughout each mission so don't be afraid to spend some of it on a weapon from one of the many gun chests you find. If you end up in an arena situation where there are multiple gun chests, open all of them before the enemies appear so you have a spare gun handy in an emergency. If playing in Co-Op, don’t be greedy and hog all the money and health for yourself as all that will do is anger your friend(s).
Run!: There are many sections in each mission where you can just run past all of the enemies so take advantage of that where ever you can, because it will save you a lot of time and aggravation in the long run.
Potential Exploit:
Take this with a pinch of salt but there's an exploit that should, in theory, let you get this trophy without having to struggle so much.
1: Save and quit, then open the Campaign menu and change the difficulty to Easy (press whilst on the main menu then press it again and use to change the difficulty). Now progress through your current mission until you reach its final checkpoint.
2: After reaching the final checkpoint, save and quit then open the Campaign menu again and change the difficulty to Extreme. Once that's done, reload the checkpoint and finish the mission.
3: Rinse and repeat Steps 1 & 2 until you have finished all 9 missions and the trophy has (hopefully) popped.
However you go about getting this trophy, it will pop once you have finished the following missions on Extreme difficulty:
Harbin's Dig Site
Hidden Valley
Tunnels of Wadjet
The Towering Temple
Cursed Village
Cut-Throat Caverns
Forsaken City - Note: You can make the final battle a tad easier by playing solo, then calling in a friend after the Minotaur Champion has spawned. By doing it this way, will ensure you only have to face one of these things instead of 2. Credit to GoldenComix for this info.
Great Pyramid
Afterlife
You will know when a mission has been completed on Extreme difficulty, because the following icon will appear on it:
All reviews about difficulty are about bulls. Yes, they absorb a lot if you play 3-4 (and even 2, if the second one is not useful) and do not use weapons from the boxes. Rapid fire (90 rounds), sniper (25), machine gun (not ice) and all shotguns kill him with half the rounds (it is advisable to stun him with an amulet or a school grenade at this time).
On the last boss you can reduce as much as possible. On easy, get to the boss, go through the beast, go through the first phrase with the boss, get to the island (use and pick up a healer, buy a weapon, if necessary), go through the beast again and go into the portal for the second phase to the boss - at this moment there will be more one control point. Restart on extreme and you only need to kill her twice while she is flying.
I completed all the missions solo, and also looked for specific weapons on the bosses. In the first and second missions, bulls, any weapon. If there was a boss with points on his body (with a hammer, with a staff), then he took a sniper/rifle to get into the surrender circles. Kills a skeleton sniper in the chest in 20 hits. He ran with a shotgun, which has the maximum damage bar. Up close, it can kill 3 samurai in one shot, when a machine gun takes up a clip for each one. Stones: damage, armor penetration and any third.
It turned out to be easier to pass the bulls solo (on the 2nd attempt), because... there is 1 bull per wave, not 2, and you have to deal much less damage (half a clip of weapon standards). The difficulty was caused by the grenade throwers - they must be killed on the roof first. Well, be sure to take a healer with you so that you can recover if something doesn’t go according to plan.
