How to unlock the Lantern Smasher achievement in STRANGER OF PARADISE FINAL FANTASY ORIGIN PS4 & PS5 - Definitive Guide
The first time you'll encounter a Tonberry, is on the second mission "The Journey Begins".
Shortly after you're at the first save crystal, you'll find some pirates to deal with. Go through the doors, head left of the splitting path and there are some stacked boxes (destroy these) leading to a hidden alcove. Follow the path here, but keep an eye out on your right hand side, there will be a slope leading back up, kinda going back and in the room there will be a couple of enemies including the Tonberry.

A Tonberry showed up for me in the first main mission, it was in one of the four side rooms really close to where the Garland boss fight is.

Like the Cactuar above, Tonberries are also very recognizable as they've appeared in many Final Fantasies. Small bipedal creatures based on salamanders, they have smooth green skin but wear oversized brown robes and carry a lantern.
There are also Master Tonberries, which are a more powerful variant, often found in Side Missions.
The first Tonberry you'll come across is also during the 1st main quest, "Illusion at Journey's End" in the Chaos Shrine, so you'll be able to get this fairly early on. Like the Cactuar, they drop a lot of good loot, so it's best to always kill them if you can find them.
Note: Cactuars and Tonberries do not respawn once killed, so if you use a Save Cube after defeating them, they won't reappear.
