This can be done cumulatively while progressing towards the other achievements, it does not need to be done in a single sitting like the Highest, Fastest, Farthest achievement.
After becoming familiar enough with the controls for each event to beat all three campaigns, you should have managed gold on most of the easier events. At this point, you can go back through & play single events that you don't recognize as having achieved gold in. I made a list & checked them off just to be safe.
If you have trouble with a particular event (I'm looking at you Mr. 1500M) you can create a custom competition & place that event first. Going into it you will have 9 boosts to use.

I can verify that I had to do this in one setting. So I recommend doing these all in one setting. I kept a list of golds I got and when I went to do this achievement I had to do them ALL over again. I know this for a fact because the last event I did was diving, I had won MANY gold metals in that event.
I am not saying everyone has this problem but I would think about doing this in one setting.

Does this possibly have anything to do with the autosave feature? You ALWAYS have to turn it on in the game options menu as it's listed as OFF every time I start my saved game up. Hmmm.....

You can get this achievement by going through all the competition events which you also need to do for the achievement called highest, fastest, farthest.
