You will eventually be able to buy the Fireball attack for 3000 coins in the store.
Once purchased, you can perform the attack by press down, forward,
. This is similar to the button combo used in many fighting games. Unfortunately, many of these special attacks don't work well if you try to do it too quickly.
I personally found the process not to be too fluid. In other words, I would use the D-pad and press Down, then forward, then, instead of trying to roll down to forward like you are probably used to.
Anyways, keep and eye on your special meter (you have to wait about a second between each shot) and spam the attack against enemies. This works well on larger enemies later in the game. Regardless, it shouldn't take too long to earn this if you are trying.
