How to unlock the Master achievement in Super Contra - Definitive Guide
This cannot be done in co-op.
This is the hardest achievement I've gotten and my most proud, and I'll try to share with you guys how I did it. First off, I used double missiles throughout the game, as the spreader doesn't seem to fire right for me, there seems to be breaks or times where it stalls from firing and that can get you killed. I've made it all the way to the wall before the final boss with double missiles. Don't be afraid to take break's, time between tries doesn't make you worse, as I came back after 3 months of not trying and got closer than ever first try. Eventually beating it that day. Be persistent and this one can be yours. Practice and memorization is what gets this done.
Level 1 - Grab the power up at the start that gives you MG missile rockets. Advance through the level regularly, as for the tank, jump and take the guy out in the turret as they can combine their tank shot and his shot to make an undodgeable combo, ruining everything and causing you to start over. For the helo, grab the power up pre-fight for double rockets, as soon as the middle part comes into view, jump into it while shooting for more missiles into it while being able to dodge shots, try to break through and shoot it down via the blue flame as fast as you can, you want to not have to wait for a second pass but if you do, no big deal, just shoot straight right untilnit stops letting troops out. For the ending, your dodge skills come into play, come in running from the bottom firing at a top right angle, sometimes you can take out the far left guy. Then work on shooting down the barrier for the right side and finishing him, and finally the middle, and shoot the piece at the top to finish the level.
Level 2 - Pretty easy level, your missiles outreach everything. Before the first tank, a bomb floats from the right side, it helps to grab it for later. Skip the first tanks then shoot down the machine gun turrets from afar. When you come up to the part with machine gun turrets on either side, shoot the bomb to kill them both, then advance while shooting straight ahead, two guys will be out of view but can hit you if you aren't paying attention as the walls cover their shots up. On the next boss, stay near the bottom and just keep shooting up, the laser part of the boss cant hurt you, he can literally run it over you and not kill you, but the guys shooting bullets can, take them out first if you can. Finish him and the level.
Level 3 - Hardest level IMO. It's very easy to not see shots coming as the trees are in your way, don't even attempt master until you have mastered the beginning of this level as it's what kept me from getting it a lot earlier. My best advice is note there will be a guy in the tree and on the ground as well as a ground turret all at once, be ready to take the tree guy out first and try to concentrate on where the ground guys shots will be so you can jump over and finish him. Be ready for one more tree guy as well as guys jumping from the top of the screen who can literally jump on top of you. In my master run, I did die here and pick up single spread and got to the end of level 5 before the wall before the boss killed me. So don't give up, but I also played extremely well. Hit the water and watch for guys from behind. Don't get out of the water, stay at the edge until the ground turret pokes up, kill it and advance. Easily dodge the missiles from the missile pod and slay it. Another missile gun will fly overhead if you need it. Advance slowly after the fallen trees as aliens begin to jump from the top of the screen and take a few shots to kill, take them one at a time and be ready. Next area, prone and fire to kill the guys who come out of the ground. Then kill the two pods, with double missiles, nothing should get out of them. For the boss, he can be very difficult. Destroy the thing spewing larva immediately, jumping into it while it comes into screen. Once its dead, focus on eliminating the larva on the ground. Once they are dead as well, be watching for the red dots. Concentrate on wither you will have to jump or duck, it will either sweep across your head area, or your feet. Just keep jumping while shooting straight up into the boss, that way it cant hit you with the red ball and you are killing him.
Level 4 - This one can be very easy with weapons, and very hard without. If you have your double missiles, just advance slowly and kill all the aliens before they can get too close. You'll come to a mini boss who fly's back in forth spewing things. Just shoot up without moving if you have missiles, you should be fine as it dies before attacking. Advance again slowly as there are flying aliens as well. Get to the end and eliminate the egg pods on the ground and get against the far right wall and start jumping and firing up, make sure you don't touch him. He should go down before his first lunge as he has very little life.
Level 5 - Now it gets real. Take the left path and blast the little guys off of you before they can get too close. Eventually the spinning heads appear. Start firing straight up, only move if you have a bullet coming at you, and only move as much as you need to. Stay there until the head dies then move on, a swarm of them come at you, do the same thing. A pod with a bomb in it comes before this part, so grab that, it works wonders, but I would save it for the next area. On this part, try to stay to one side and shoot the one that's going to hit you and pass between the rest, if it looks hopeless, launch the bomb. Now you come to a wall that spits a line of bullets. I've never beaten it without dying so I just purposely die so I can rip into it while invincible from a new life, it also has low life.
Final Boss - I've seen a lot of tactics, I failed miserably at using someone else's by firing through the face and destroying the brain that way. It's an option, but what I did was stayed back and concentrated on blasting as fast as I could on the flyers from it's mouth. Then in between them, I shot the right face that lunges. Try to kill it first, then move onto its ear. You can stand to the right of him after you kill the right face and shoot the flyers as they come out and go back to killing him. Destroy his eyes next, then finally move onto that crystal on his head. First the things around it should die, then the crystal explodes, you get a wallop of points, and an achievement worth more than this website gives it credit for. Stay away from him while he explodes, I've heard the explosion can kill you. Happy hunting. Tell us if you get it please, I like to hear about others making this happen. :)

Can this be done on co-op?

YourFinalMoment's guide is amazing and helped me in my long journey to unlocking this achieve.
When i was last trying to unlock this tough achievement i did really well with a double spread gun thanks to the extra spread it gives when upgraded, this made up for my inconsistent accuracy with the Rockets.
So just incase you are struggling with the Rocket method, here is a youtube video that is aimed towards the Spread gun method. Good luck guys! (Credit to teamsaxo for the video) The video is not amazing quality but you can still see whats going on.
Apart from video guidance the best thing is practice PRACTICE PRACTICE!! Mainly because you really need to memorize where and when the enemies come from or where they are sat. This achieve was hard work but trust me, its worth it in the end.

Good stuff

For this I definitely recommend a turbo pad with the rocket launcher, but you're still going to need a few tips...
Level 1-1. For the tank just ease up towards the screen before he appears so you will have some distance, then immediately jump and shoot twice to take out the gunner, after that if you have the rocket launcher tap the x button as faster as you can and he will go down. The rocket launcher without the upgrade will fire faster if you tap the button. If you have a turbo then you don't need to worry about this, one jump will suffice for the gunner, and the tank will go down so fast that you don't really need any distance.
Level 1-2. the helicopter might seem intimidating, but it's really a pushover if you know what you're doing. First you need to grab the second rocket launcher that floats across the screen for the upgrade. After that, just shoot at the first turret, then the next two that are closest to you and make sure you don't get hit, then aim for the center and keep shooting till it's dead.
Level 1-3. Right after you beat the chopper, keep running to your right and don't stop. When you get to the fortress, jump and shoot while wagging the stick. There will be a pink guy to your right and a green guy to your left when you reach the fortress. Deal with them and go back to shooting the fortress. You will most likely have to dodge and sometimes unfair things can happen here no matter how good you are.
Level 2-1. Lots of wiggling of your stick will be required here. In the first room you will want to grab the second floating power up. (it's a shell, you will need it for the end) When you grab it, run between the tanks with no fear. If you want to kills the tanks, it's easy. Just run directly into the first tank and shoot after you grab the shell (make sure you grab the shell when you're close to tank) then after it's destroyed, lean against the right side of it and shoot the other tank diagonally.
Level 2-2. The next room is easy. Walk in and wag your stick, make sure you don't grab the spread that floats across. quickly run between the two turrets while focusing on any enemies that are on screen (you can destroy the turrets from a distance easily, but it's not necessary)
Once you are past the two turrets take out all the guys and pay attention to any enemies coming behind you.
Level 2-3. Don't enter room 3, stand at the thresh hold and shoot the stationary enemies from a distance. When you advance into the room, there will be hostiles flooding behind you, deal with them swiftly. Heading toward the bridge there will be more stationary enemies, kill them from a distance like the last ones. After that you can run across the bridge while staying in the middle until you get to the door. There is a way to take out everything, but I really don't recommend it. If you want to know how just ask.
Level 2-4. Once you've blasted the door open wiggle the crap out of your stick take out the last two stationary enemies and then you can either A. stay in middle and go between the bullets or B. immediately hug the left or right wall of the room once you've killed them. Wait for the boss to start moving, then activate you're shell. After that just shoot the boss until he's dead, he goes down pretty quick. I forgot to mention that you should NOT be dead at this point so you should have your shell.
Level 3-1. Keep walking until you see a turret on the ground, go prone and shoot until it's dead. Keep inching up and stop when an enemy drops from the tree, there will be some behind you too so pay attention. Slowly work your way until you see a guy shooting from a tree. Get back and jump shoot diagonally while dodging his fire until he's dead. While your trying to shoot him, shoot to the right of the screen to kill advancing enemies. You don't want a pink guy mixing his bullets with the tree guy's bullets. Now you want to ease very carefully until you see the next tree guy then repeat. After that just keep on inching the screen but now you want keep going prone and shoot while you advance and you should be able to take out the prone guy before you see him. Now you just need to run forward and shoot diagonally up to take out the last tree guy.
3-2. Enter the water and keep shooting left and right while advancing until you reach the turret. Take it out then get on land and go prone to take out the prone guy. after that just move forward and shoot to take out the mortar and try to dodge the projectiles as best as you can.
3-3. After the mortar you will see a rocket power up floating across the screen. Whether you've died or not, make sure you shoot it just when it reaches the fallen tree thing and grab it so the bottom enemies won't kill when you try to get on it. Stay on the bottom part of the tree and watch out for pink guys above.
3-4 Once you exit the tree, move forward and keep going prone to take out the first spider. Inch up and watch the top of the screen for spider 2. quickly shoot diagonally while wagging your stick to take out the spider then immediately shoot straight to kill advancing hostiles. Do the same for next spider, but make sure you stop shooting to avoid the spread gun until it passes. Run until you see the alien spider skulls on the ground. Just keep going prone while shooting as you move toward them to take them out. Keep running forward and shooting, if you have an upgraded rocket or a turbo controller, the giant sacks will die before they shoot their red balls.
3-5 This is probably the worst boss in the game and the only one that no one has a good strategy for. Luckily for you, I have a method that is consistent but still requires a little luck. Do not shoot it! make sure you are under it and toward the right of the sack but not too right (I think you can use the left side, but I recommend the right) Shoot up until you see a bunch of shrimp, stop and deal with them as best as you can. Go back to shooting until it's dead then go prone to avoid the red balls and make sure none of the shrimp hit you. When the balls have passed get in the center and shoot up. Jump when the red balls come and out, and make sure you are shooting the ones that come from the center. And that's it, just make sure you are quick with the sack and stay alert when the shrimp come out. It can get really hairy here.
4-1. Simple level. At the start, stay at the bottom and stay until you've killed all the big alien balls. Make sure to shoot up when going up the ramps to kills the aliens. When you go up the first ramp you will see this weird flying alien, Just shoot straight and he will die. When you get the near the other side of the ramp, another flying alien will come for the bottom, go prone as soon as you see him. Head down the ramp and try to destroy everything but be careful to not shoot any upgrades if you don't need them.
4-2 Keep on going until you reach the first boss. You should be on the top platform before he appears. Shoot him immediately and follow him with your gun. He will go down quick but try to avoid the red balls if there are any. Move to the next ramp and stop to kill the alien that pops out if the wall. Next area is easy so I won't discuss it. Move on until you see the eggs, Shoot them, get under the boss quick and jump shoot when he pops out. He should die before he can do anything if you have the proper weapons.
5-1. Go left and keep wagging, stop to shoot the shell. Keep going left and avoid the mouths and avoid the laser gun that floats across. When the skulls show up, just stand still and shoot until they are dead and make sure the little alien spiders don't shoot you.
5-2. This next section is a b#$%*. Move forward and shoot a path when you need to. If you feel like you're going to die, use the shell and haul a$$. When you get to the wall of death, there is a few things you can do but you will probably die. You can try to avoid the bullets and shoot it, you can use the shell on it if you still have one, or you can run to the left or right as soon as you enter and hug the side of the wall, shooting it until it's dead. The last one is what I'd recommend if you don't have a shell.
5-3. Last boss is a pain. What you want to do is stay somewhere toward the lower middle of the screen. There is a sweet spot where the arms will move toward you, but won't kill you. Shoot straight until the arms are dead. You will have to watch out for the bats that come out. Sometimes they can kill you while you're standing there and there's nothing you can do about it. One bat will usually fly to your left if they come out while the arms are blocking. Be quick about killing them. Once the arms are destroyed, run up to the boss and shoot the brain for a couple of seconds between bat breaks until he's dead. All of that was assuming you had a pellet gun or a non upgraded rocket launcher. If you have an upgraded launcher, just stay in the sweet spot and fire until he's dead. *Master Achievement Unlocked*
I know this guide isn't perfect, but I hope it helps.
All of that was assuming you had a pellet gun or a non upgraded rocket launcher. If you have an upgraded launcher, just stay in the sweet spot and fire until he's dead. *Master Achievement Unlocked*
I know this guide isn't perfect, but I hope it helps.
Truly for the masters, this takes absolute precision and requires memorization of the entire game. There is little to say but practice makes perfect. One thing I can tell you is that you start with 2 lives but can gain more from the more points you gain, which helps you stay on that 1 credit/continue. MUST be done in single play.

From what I have noticed, every weapon appears to be upgradeable at least once.
- The rocket launcher (first weapon pod) doubles its firing rate and increases its range if you grab the second pod by the helo.
- The spreader (second weapon pod) increases it's rate of fire from 3 shots to 5 shots if you grab the second spreader by the stairs in level 2.
- The grenade gun (third weapon pod) increases its splash radius from two fireballs that spread out to the sides to 4 fireballs that spread out in sort of a star pattern.
- The laser (right before the end of the first level) seems to double its range if you grab the second pod by the first tank in level 2.
- This added range is an absolute lifesaver in level 2. It allows you to out range all of the enemies and turrets. You can actually shoot all of them if you (and your partner *cough*) are patient enough. With the added range you can take out all of the enemies fairly easily as opposed to trying to run past them (which can be pretty risky).
- In level 4, it makes taking down some of the tougher/stronger enemies a little easier as well (if you can make it through the sickness in level 3 without getting hit).
