After beating the game at least once, go back to Story Mission 3 and complete it without using items. You'll make short work of this with beefed up characters.

Very true, thanks for the quest suggestion.
I combined this with the “Complete a Quest after losing 4 characters” achievement by intentionally letting all but my last character die in the final Town Defense encounter of the quests. 2-for-1 achievement run!
