Seems I got this by completing the 1st level of Story Mode with a character then quitting to main menu to repeat with the next character.

Thanks for the tip on playing stage 1-1! For those that started this specific achievement and unlocked other characters through the in game points shop, I recommend listing the starting characters in your solution: AiAi, MeeMee, Baby, GonGon, YanYan, and Doctor.
