How to unlock the Trial Athlete achievement in Super Street Fighter IV - Definitive Guide

The guides above already sum up everything nicely, so I wont go into too much. However I didn't see any mention of using a fight stick which I strongly recommend if you are going for this achievement. It's not to get fancy or anything, it really does help in the long run. It is much easier to perform moves and get your hand around and fingers around much quicker than on a standard controller. Not to mention it has a turbo function that will allow you to get through some trials that require timing on a controller. You can just hold down a single button rather than tapping them which makes trials that require single button inputs to be a lot easier then before. Another tip I found helpful, is to pause the game if you find yourself stuck on a certain part of a trial especially at the end of a combo that often require you to do an ultra very quickly. Such as in the case of Ken's 24 or Ibuki's 24. I paused right in the middle of the second to last attack for those so I could readjust my hands so I could get the ultra out smoothly. After you unpause you have to give it a split second before you do your input otherwise it wont register. This trick isn't always helpful, but a nice option to resort to at times. I would also recommend you start from the harder characters first and work your way down to the easier characters. Just so you will have less trouble down the road seeing as everything hard will be out of the way, also its a good confidence booster too.

Ebay, Amazon etc. (Got my Madcatz Arcade Fight stick from Gamestop)

I'm just hitting these properly now.. I have about 12 trials left

Also a good tip is to modify the combo in the trial.

IE - Ryus 21 trial.... instead of:

MP > focus cancel > MP > Focus cancel > MP> l shoryuken

I did MP > Hadoken > focus Cancel >MP > Hadoken > focus Cancel > MP l shoryuken (much easier

Congratz, I made those C ranks easy on myself with my second box, Just went out and got a 2nd copy of the game from Gamestop loaded up my dummy account and beat it to Hell over and over with the character I needed ranked up. This way I didnt have to help anyone else and I could just focus on my achievement....Oh yeah, I did take that 2nd copy of SSF4 back to Gamestop after I was finised btw. lol

You're definitely right about that arcade fightstick. Although if you're not loaded with cash like me, the fightpad is now just 30 bucks it doesn't come with the thumbstick but a d-pad. It has turbo functionality and everything so it's still a good deal for the price. I finished Hakan and T.Hawk with the normal controller but man Viper is down right impossible with the normal controller. Also do check out the vids and try to emulate makes your life easier by removing the trial and error phase for you.
Listen to this guy he knows his Street Fighter. I wasn't able to do this before my fightpad, it's definitely worth it. Sure you might get unlucky and get that mad catz product that breaks on you as usual but that's why you should buy it from a store not online so you can return/exchange it. Not all of Mad Catz stuff is bad.

Hi thx for your tips. I am currently doing all the trials on the PS3 (I dont have SSF IV for my X360, got a very cheap arcade edition for PS3 instead). I am not into fighting games so much but am a Street Fighter fan since the 90's. I couldnt find proper advice on any PS3 sites and as I am also an X360 gamer I just looked here.

You mention one very important thing: Pausing the game helps tremendously. You can even pause the game at every single input: When you have to do a Hadoken (just an example, its simple without pausing) you can pause, HOLD down, unpause for a split second, pause again immediately, HOLD down right, unpause, pause again immediately, HOLD right + punch button, unpause and boom, the Hadoken comes out. The game registers everything you input during the pause if you hold the buttons when unpausing. This is especially helpful for linking all these difficult combos in the later trials for each character (12-24) where I just lack the speed for proper inputs sometimes. If you learn to pause and unpause very quickly this can be so helpful. The only thing to know is that the game does jump to the next frame when you pause. Keep this in mind because some moves are very sensitive when it comes to frames. Some moves require 1 frame, some require a whole lot more, so you have to keep the timing in mind when you use this method or else moves wont come out in some cases: 1 frame moves require a super fast pause. Others require more between the movements: I remember a Dudley challenge (17?) where you have to cancel into one of his ultras at the end but despite pressing all three punch buttons, he always did his super combo. This was because I was too fast: I canceled the preceding move into the Super Combo instead of waiting some more frames to link into the ultra.

EDIT: I use one of these Madcatz Fightpads. They are not as expensive as a fight stick but they also have a turbo function, a six button layout and a diagonal dpad. One question: Do you know any trials for which you specifically recommend Turbo?

EDIT 2, 03/20/17: 20 of 35 character's trials completely done with the above mentioned method. I think I will have done them all in like 4-5 weeks :).

EDIT 3 07/14/17: A little late but I managed to get all these done on PS3 in May 17 by using the above mentioned method. But I am sure this will also work with a Madcatz Fightpad on X360 :).

All i have to say is practice, practice, practice, and more practice. First thing you want to do if you havent already get familiar with each character's motions. With most combos you can break then down into seperate parts to get down the execution. With the chain combos (LP,LP,LP,LP,HP,etc.) watch the life bar of the dummy. There should be a spark that cycles across the life bar from left to right when you strike the dummy giving you a window to execute the next attack. This is extremely helpful with timing. Good luck !!!!!!!!!

If you need help follow this trial guide it pretty much goes over all the techniques needed to finish them

Ibuki's 24 is alot easier than her 23rd.
Advice for Ibuki 24. Is when you do the target combo lk-mk...do 2 full circle motions while imputting and land on UF when u finish and hit KKK. It bypasses the qcf qcfuf motion. Making it real easy.

Also trust me, because I did all the trials using a controller. So I can guarantee it works.

There are a handful of really tough ones here. Ken's #24, Adon's 22 & 24, Ibuki's 24, C. Viper's 22.

The best advice to give for Adon's is to use rapid fire if you have a stick, that was the only way I could pull off the links. Same for Ibuki's 24. Ken's just took about 750 practice attempts (Just like it did on SFIV for both xbox and ps3 when I got it on those). I would also suggest not starting in the corner for Ken's since it is easier to get the airborne Tatsu when you are not in the corner.

For the Super Jump cancels, I would suggest going into practice mode and turning on input. What you want to see for Ibuki's is:

LK, D, DF, F, UF, MK, D, DF, F, KKK

So you start the motion for the Ultra during the second attack. If you are just starting, I would suggest getting LK, D, DF, F, UF, MK FIRST, then Ibuki will super jump. Once you can get that regularly, then you can add the last fireball motion with all three kicks.

Hopefully that makes sense. Feel free to ask questions here on any specific ones, and I'll see if I can help.

I did end up using rapid fire for a bunch of the links, as they are 1 frame links meaning that you have 1/60 of a second to hit it right on the head and get the attack to come off.

for any trial that includes dragon punch movement you can double tap DF (2 x down forward) and get the same result. you can also hold offensive crouch position and slide DF, D, DF for dragon punch movement. i read it on the following page which gives more detail:

http://www.eventhubs.com/guides/2009/may/04/shortcut-motions...

this was especially helpful in trials that included low combo into dragon punch movement such as Sakura Trial 17
JUMP HP, CROUCH LP, CROUCH LP, EX SHOUKEN

hope this helps somebody ;)

750 attempt is rediculous.. I know it took me about an hour to get a LP HK combo.. just those 2 buttons.. which could have been just as many.. surely the combo's should be much simpler/looser to pull off, just keeping it to a matter of memorising them

One thing to metion about C vipers #24 is that you HAVE to high jump cancel the burning kick into her ultra. In SF4 this combo was possible by doing a ground pound and then high jumping across the screen and doing a burning kick into a ultra but it took me a while to relize it isnt that easy any more.

This is by far the most frustrating trophy of the game. You must complete all 24 challenges within each of the 35 characters trials. Even veteran players have trouble doing some of the trials so don’t expect this to come easy.

Tips:

  • Whenever you’re feeling tired from doing the other trophies, try to do some challenges for each character until you feel as if you can no longer do them anymore and come back to it later after you have played the game some more. You will come back to see some of the trials aren’t as hard as they used to be … but still very difficult nonetheless in the later trials
  • Some people suggest pausing in between frames to help you, do not listen to them, these Trials are better done in real time
  • Some trials can only be done in the corner, so if a trial doesn’t work try pushing Dan into the corner and see if you obtain better results
  • Use youtube as a good source for viewing other people complete these trials to visually see what you must do for some of the harder levels of each characters trials

For Additional help please refer to the following links:

VesperArcade - Super Street Fighter IV Trials: A Youtube user by the name of VesperArcade who does videos for all sorts of things fighting game related, in his channel not only does he display how he did each trial with a display of his fightstick, few of them he also displayed doing it with a normal controller.

The "How to do this trial" Topic: It may involve alittle manual searching or use of the "Search This Thread" bar to find out other peoples inputs to questions on how they did a certain trial and see if the same method works for you.

The most difficult trophy in the game, in which everything depends on your skill. All combos are doable even on a standard Dualshock.
To imagine what a combo looks like, you can use the video from this channel:

To get the trophy, just complete the usual TRIAL. There is no need to go through the ULTRA TRIAL.
