Mechanoid is the boss at the end of the second-last level, and is a multi-stage boss fight. You will first fight against a white version of yourself, which will shoot the standard shot at you, shrink sometimes, and then also spin around the screen. As long as you don't sit still right in front of it, you shouldn't have any problems avoiding its normal shots. Just keep shooting it (bubble works great here) to destroy it.
The second phase of the fight is against the actual Mechanoid, and is the longest fight in the game. He'll stay in the background and first send tentacles in from various directions, which may then wave around the screen. Don't bother shooting them, just dodge them with
. It'll then send a single tentacle up that will shoot at your continuously. Again, don't bother shooting it, just focus on dodging. Finally, it will dip down from the background and come up the right side of the screen. Focus all of your fire at the glass around its brain. It'll try to hit you with its tentacles, but I've found that if you sit right up against the glass dome, the tentacles hardly ever hit you. Repeat these attacks at least 3-4 more times, and once the glass breaks the boss will be defeated, surprisingly.
