This achievement is cumulative across all levels and playthroughs.
Diamonds drop periodically (and quite often) from enemies that you kill. They serve no real purpose other than giving you points (which are useless) and for these achievements. Diamonds always drop as green ones, and shooting them turns them yellow, then red, then purple, the violet. You need to collect 12 of each color. Unsurprisingly, you'll get the achievements for 12 green and yellow diamonds quite early in the game. You could focus on shooting ones to turn them red, purple and violet, but you will unavoidably do this numerous times while shooting at enemies. It's easy enough to keep track of which achievements you've unlocked, and focus on turning diamonds the colors you need for the remaining achievements. Just don't do this at the expense of dying. Doing so makes it very easy to have all color-specific achievements within the first few levels of the game.
