How to unlock the Secret Mission 18 achievement in Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide
This is for those who are having troubles and a few tips of how I did it on both versions of the game:
Set up before the fight-
My team - Yuri, Raven, Rita, Estelle
1)drop difficulty to easy, makes for easier guard breaks
2)go into artes (1st option in the main menu) and add a shortcut with LS and pick the Rain attack for Raven and attach it to every right thumbstick option
3)make sure Raven does not have any weapons or artes equipped that changes his Rain to Rainsong (i.e- weapons with the ability called Crucible on it)
Now for the fight-
1)Murder him for the first 50% of the fight until a small cutscene
2)change your attack pattern for everyone to defense (and just have Estelle on full time heal only and everyone else using items only - Even Raven)
3)wait till after Yeager uses his overlimit and he is back to normal attacks
4)Use Yuri and I used overlimit 1 and spammed Destruction field (reports that Lone Wolf Charge has been successful too) 4 times (do not continue spamming because you will knock Yaeger out of his 'wiggle/dazed' stance)
5)when he is in the wiggle/dazed stance right thumbstick in any direction so Raven will use his Rain ability (can help if Yuri and Yeager are somewhat close to the group based on abilities you have unlocked for distance attacks with Raven)
6)you will see GREAT when done correctly
7)BOOM STUPID ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED and you can go take a breather after finally beating this bastard
Now keep in mind, if you do over destruction field him, reset and use another overlimit to get him back to the wiggle/dazed stance. I did this 6 times to make sure and test my theory but all 6 times only took me 4 destruction fields, maybe cause of my level but you will get it.
This is how i did it for both versions of the game. Feel free to let me know if I missed anything but again this is how I did it, I know there are tons of videos showing many other ways.
If you are having trouble utilizing the Destruction Field way, you can use an hourglass to suspend Yeager in his guard animation to get free damage on him which will break his guard soon after the hourglass wears off. I had huge trouble getting the Destruction Field way to work until I used an hourglass. Essentially Yeager cannot break out of his guard while frozen. If you don't use an hourglass, after about 3-4 destruction fields he seemed to automatically start attacking again instead and somehow break out of my attacks. It's super annoying.
Get Yeager below 50% and a short clip will happen about his heart. Wait until Yeager uses his Mystic Arte/his overlimit expires then begin attacking him afterwards.
The trick to the hourglass technique is attacking him before you use the hourglass. This gets damage on his guard. After a basic combo and about two artes, suspend him with an hourglass and then destruction field spam with level 1 overlimit. The damage will carry over.
After his guard breaks he will say 'Argh!!' and lean back. If another one of your characters attacks Yeager during this time, you'll reset his guard and have to try again. For this reason, set your entire team to Defend once Yeager's overlimit/mystic arte is completed.
You have a short window of time to swap to Raven and use the Rain arte. Just make sure Crucible is not set in his Skills or he is wearing a weapon with Crucible as a skill, which changes Rain to Rainsong.
The clip below was done on Hard difficulty on a New Game+ run.
Obviously you're going to want Raven in this fight. I would also recommend two more melee fighters to beat up on Yeager to break his guard faster as Rita will only knock him out of his guard, getting rid of the chance of actually guard breaking him. Once the fight starts, just beat up on him like usual until a small cutscene starts in which he shows the Blastia in his chest. This indicates the second part of the fight is about to start and this is where you'll be getting the secret mission.
First off, make sure Yeager isn't in Overlimit. Once your melee attackers start attacking him and he's guarding, switch over to Raven if you haven't done so already, go into Overlimit and just spam Rain. Eventually his guard will break and if you're lucky, Rain will hit him as he's hunched over, getting you the secret mission. You'll know you got it if a small cutscene plays when Yeager says "Congratulations... damn."
Option 1: Leave everyone on their normal attack strategies, go into Overlimit, and begin spamming Rain with Raven. The overwhelming attacks will certainly break his guard and someone will hit him. The trick here is hoping it's Raven who hits him. If someone else hits first directly after the guard breaks, the cycle will need to be repeated. This is a bit RNG, but very straightforward.
Option 2: This requires the Moon Selector item. Put everyone on "Defend" attack strategies but set Raven to stay near the enemy, control Yuri and go into Overlimit, then start repeating Destruction Field with very minor delays between each attack (so not an all-out spam of the move). Once he hunches over, continue with Destruction Field with minor delays so you can tell when his guard breaks and can stop before using another one. Now, immediately go into the battle menu and switch control to Raven and use Rain to immediately explode his heart.
This is probably the hardest secret mission in the game. It sounds simple, but the timing is extremely crucial and difficult to pull off. First, attack as normal until Yeager reveals the blastia in his heart to initiate the second phase of the battle. Also, make sure Raven does not have anything equipped that will alter his Rain arte (where it turns into Rainsong instead). You now have two options to complete this mission.
