You need to synthesize 20 things. You can synthesize later on in the early part of the game at the general stores.
Note: Don't synthesize more than 1 thing at a time or it will glitch the achievement.

Do you guys know if this can be got (as well as the 20 item one) on a separate save and still have vesperia master unlock? I ask because I had 50 hours invested before realizing that my synthesis achievement is glitched.

I think you should be fine. I got this achievement and not the one for synthesizing one item, oddly enough, and they're on separate saves. I imagine your Xbox only cares that you get all the achievements, considering it's probably impossible to get every single one on one run-through.

You will need to synthesize 20 different items to get this achievement. To synthesize something head to a shop and select the synthesize option from the menu. From there it will show you items you can make in white (greyed items you don't have enough materials for) so simply use this menu as if you were buying items.
Warning: Do not ever set your synthesis count to more than 1. If you do that, the achievements will glitch and you will have to start a new game to get it.
