How to unlock the Speedster achievement in Tales of Vesperia - Definitive Guide

You must beat the game in 15 hours or less.
Scroll to the bottom to skip the Grade Farming Tech.

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS (Speedster) ON FIRST PLAYTHROUGH.

A good piece of advice is to do the grade farming thing in your first game. In case you don't know what that is....

YOU MUST HAVE TIDAL WAVE!!!!! (set to A, works the best)

Must have skillz:

Minimum Damage (MUST HAVE)
Spell End (STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)
OL Bonus 2 (STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)
OL Boost (STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)
TP Recover (STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)
Reducer (STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)
Light Magic (STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)
Spirits (1, 2 and 3) (STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)
Stun Magic (STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)

(Note that this can be done without all except Min. Damage, but is much easier with them)

Next, put 3 members into your party that can throw items to you. (Item Thrower skill, Item Pro helps as well)

Now, go to Stratagy and make all characters:

Target: Help Allies
HP: Avoid Risk
TP: Do Not Use
Action: Defend
Position: Keep Distance
Item Set: Watch TP
OVL: Do not use
FS: Do Not Use

Items you should have:

Dark Bottle
Overlimit Bottle
Orange Gels
Pineapple Gels
Miracle Gels

Go into a battle, activate overlimit (higher = better) and spam Tidal Wave. Once your OL gets low, start it again as soon as it runs out. If done correctly, you can get a super chain of up to 1,400 hits (or more), earning 1,000 + grade.

Equip items like Dice and Blue Dice to increase the amount earned.

New Game +
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, now start a New Game + and select 10x Exp (3,000 grade) and preferably Arte and Skill carry over (2,000 grade). Item carryover helps as well. (another 1,000 Grade I believe, so you want at least 7,000 Grade)

Blaze through as fast as possible, using Holy Bottles and you should have no prob. Being at lvl 40 at Barbos is a pretty good place to be at. I'll add more as I progress on doing this as well.

EDIT: Was level 50 when I fought Shawnn.

Was at level 60 when I fought Estell.

Was level 75 when I fought Duke.

An obvious piece would be to avoid side quests, stick to the story. If not sure what to do, you are gonna wanna save and print out a guide so you know where to go and when.

Hey, does getting the "Records" extra affect this, since you can bring over your total game time?

I don't think it does, what I did to make sure it didn't was make a separate save file for my Speedster run. That way you an save without needing to worry about that.

^To Clarify he is saying that when you bring over records in the grad shop, your time just adds on from what you had in your previous play through. So if it took you 100 hours, you time would start at hour 100, not 1; and he was asking if this effects this achievement. Saving on another file doesn't answer the question, the record carry over goes with you or it doesn't.

To answer the question, it does not effect it, however, it makes it a little more tricky because unless you do it in one sitting, the time in () resets each time, that is your current play time. So you have to write down your start time and add 15 hours to that. So my start time is 132 hours 1 minute, so for me the achievement should pop as long as my final time is at 147 hours. And for perspective the time I was using as a pace from a guide was around 3:50ish after beating barbaros, 7:40ish Zaude (final time 11:25), my pace is 3:03 after beating barabos.

When exactly will this achievement pop up? Right as you beat Duke, or after the ending credits?

If memory serves me correctly, it should be during the final cutscene.

are there any time markers? you know, like 'beat barbos 4 hours in' or something? something good to gauge progress?

Just finished the run - killed Barbos at 3:10, Alexei at about 7:30, and final time was 9:36. I had everything else completed in the game, so wasn't doing anything but the speed run. Also had 10x EXP on. Hope this will help someone else

Don't forget you can hold down cn_X + cn_A at the same time to speed through any dialogue sections of the game. It's faster than mashing cn_A or cn_B to advance the dialogue during the parts of the story with long conversations.

This will need to be done on your second (or third, etc.) play through the game. After you finish the game, start an EX New Game and buy the perk "10x experience" from the Grade shop, along with anything else you can afford that will help such as carrying items, artes and skills over. This way you will level very quickly and can overpower all your enemies and bosses. Be sure to skip any dialogue possible, avoid random enemy encounters (use the item "Holy Bottle" often) and only focus on the main story missions.
