To get this, you need to take yourself, and your team*, up to a platinum colour on the teams shield. Experience to your rank ONLY counts when playing a crossword that says "New Crossword" before you click on it. This means that yes, you do need to buy more crosswords with tokens you've earnt from the in-game shop. You can buy 50 new crosswords for 1000 tokens, 20 for 500, 10 for 300, 5 for 180, 2 for 80.

* You do not actually need a member of your team in a puzzle with you, but it can make them go quicker!

Obviously, it's best to keep playing the same puzzles again, saving up 1000 tokens, and then buying 50 new puzzles.

By the time I had played all of the base-game crosswords in the game, with my team (there are 20 crosswords in the base game, and some of THEM are duplicated), my team was up to rank 42. Unfortunately, this is when we discovered something very disappointing;

This achievement is a prestige-based achievement, like in Call of Duty. You need to get to Rank 99 in Bronze to then be able to level up to Silver. Silver Rank 99 to get then be able to level up to Gold. Then, finally, Gold Rank 99 to get to Platinum Rank 1, and get this achievement.

EDIT #1: There is a slight 'tracking' glitch with your rank levels where your rank, as you're nearing a colour-upgrade (e.g. silver rank to gold rank) in ranking numbers, will display Bronze Rank 99. Do not worry about this, as this is just a glitch in the game, and your ranking is remembered. Once you've ranked up with more crossword puzzles, it will display what your rank actually is.

EDIT #2: There is talk from the developers that they are changing the ranking system. The above information is very likely to become invalid or incorrect should the developers change the ranking system.

EDIT #3: According to the developers, now only people that are at a rank that is platinum in colour lose rank if they don't play, as Platinum-ranked players have to 'Chase the leader', i.e. Play more games than the leader. Stupidly, you can't see who the leader is, or what the highest rank is, because there's no worldwide leaderboards... only leaderboards for your friends list.

The other solution provides some very good information on this achievement, however, I would like to give you some easy tips on getting this as soon as possible.

It really doesn't matter if you have any team members. In fact, I found that most of the time my team doesn't join when I invite them so it's just best to make your puzzles public. You could even just make some public games and then just ignore them while other people complete the crossword. As long as the puzzle is completed, you get credit for it.

Rank is based on number of NEW crosswords completed. Each new crossword completed ranks you up just ONE point. So to get to Platinum, or prestige level 4 (100 + 100 + 100 + 1 levels), you will need to complete 301 new puzzles. It doesn't matter which mode or solo/public/team, it just needs to be a new crossword. You may have already figured out that every time you complete the same puzzle again, it no longer affects your ranking. Having said the above, the best way to get this achievement is to do the following:

1. Complete all the puzzles you have unlocked - make them public.
2. Do a daily puzzle every day as each one is new - make them public.
3. Every time you log on, search the public matches and try to join puzzles you haven't completed (they are marked NEW CROSSWORD)- these count too!
4. After you get 1000 tokens, buy a new puzzle pack and launch as many as you can publicly and have others complete them (as mentioned in the other solution).

For the least amount of work, you don't have to even fill in a word. Just join or create a match and let it sit there until it's complete and then repeat the process over and over again. You can have 5 matches going at one time (unless you upgrade). So just work on other stuff and when the little pop up icon shows up on your screen that a puzzle is complete, create or join another match with a NEW puzzle.

FYI - I noticed that sometimes the game will give you two of the same crossword when you purchase a new puzzle pack. I believe both count as new crosswords as they will still say "NEW CROSSWORD" underneath.

As the other poster mentioned you will need to buy puzzle packs with the tokens you've earned in order to speed up the number of new crosswords you can complete. To earn tokens, you WILL need to complete puzzles so I will leave it up to you on how many you want to play legit or not. I found the best way to earn tokens is to write down or print out the solutions to some of the initial basic puzzles you have (I chose The Game of Life and Crib Sheet) and just crank those out solo or join public matches with those puzzles. You should earn an average of 30 tokens for each crossword you complete with at least 80% of the answers. Note that when you join a public match and DON'T complete any words, you will only average 1-3 tokens per match.

You could also play for fun, either way - the important thing is knowing your options for ranking up.
