To "cheer up" a teammate, you need to press 
to give them a high-five. This will transfer some of your health to them. You need to do this three times to the same teammate in a single stage. The "hit detection" with this seemed pretty finicky to me, as I would be spamming around my partner until it finally worked. It seems like you need to be facing each other and kind of lined up like you would in real life for a high five, with maybe a step between the two of you. Being right on top of each other never worked, so try to face each other when doing it to get it to work properly.
