How to unlock the Dead Men Tell No Tales achievement in Terraria - Definitive Guide

Size: Small
Difficulty: Classic
Evil: Corruption
Name: Does not matter what you enter here. leave it default if you like.
Seed: 1.1.1.1227084727

They seem to have buried explosive chests much deeper since the last patch. so I would recommend a good pickaxe before attempting this. compass and depth meter will also help but is not required.

you need to cut down the 2nd tree to your right and start digging down (28 East)

you'll reach a small cave with some water keep digging down in the exact same spot until you reach a 2nd cave (88 underground)

this is the cave with the golden chest that will explode (40 east, 96 underground) use the water to partially drown yourself to lower your HP and when you are at about 200 HP or less open and close the chest

With all my armour on and accessories It took 350/500 of my health. (def 85) so if your at the endgame you'll defiantly need to drown yourself.

You must be killed for the achievement to unlock by the explosion if it fails to kill you recreate the world and try again.

Checked with the new update that came out 02/05/2023 still works

Keep digging further down. until you see red surfacing on the walls. This is the cave that matters, for me when I drop into the water the game considers me to be in the desert biome so the water turns Yellow.

Sorry, Um be le and Adm1ral Awe5ome, I thought this game was done updating so I thought my solution would be timeless. I've now updated it to work on the current version of Terraria.

There was a recent update that took the chest out of that seed. There’s a seed I got from Adm1ral Awe5ome that has a chest that shoots a dart at you every time you open it. Once it kills you, you will get the achievement. The seed is 1.1.1.1227084727 (small, classic, corruption) and the chest is at 788’ Caverns and 343’ East

The current solution works off of adm1ral Awe5ome's world seed. it leads to a different closer and much higher damage chest.

This doesn't always work in Multiplayer at the moment, if it won't unlock in Multiplayer you will need to try unlocking it in Single Player

Anyone have a seed and coordinates for Journey players? 😅

Edit: okay so for those who don't have a compass or depth meter due to exclusively playing on a Journey character, here are the non-coordinate instructions:

Go left until you reach a snowy area. Right when the snow ends you will see two small non-snowy trees and one of the huge trees made out of wood blocks. Start digging straight down at the second small tree. Right when you start seeing lava you should also see the chest!

+1 the original solution works fine. When entering the seed in the menu, just enter the last set of numbers (1227084727) then dig down from the second tree to the right.

For those with journey mode with overpowered gear: just use a dangersense potion and ride around in your drill until you see a circle of red dots, the dead man's chest will be in the middle. Unequip all gear, turn off God mode, (hurt yourself if you have a ton of HP) and open the chest to get the achieve.

I can also confirm that the 1227084727 seed works for journey mode. Head to the last (leftmost) tree on in the snow area and dig straight down until you hit the lava. There will be a circle of red dots as soon as you hit lava (if you have dangersense potion on). The coordinates are the same as one of the other commenters: 1649 West and 998 Caverns

So there is no longer chest there for me at that seed. I don't know if it's whether the game has updated or not.
I was however able to find a chest that shoots you every time you open it. It took 10+ shots for it to kill me and I still got the achievement.
The seed I used was 1.1.1.1227084727 and it's found at 341 east I don't know what depth as I only had a compass. When you get to a mushroom biome you're close. This was done on patch 1.4.3.2.

A good seed to use is 1.4.1.1727315148

Use position tracking items aka the GPS or Cell Phone

The coordinates for the trapped chest is at

154' East
158' Underground

When you get here, preferably switch to a loadout with basically no defense at all. You want to try to kill yourself by opening the trap, which gives you the achievement.
