How to unlock the Aficionado achievement in The Ascent - Definitive Guide

FINAL-EDIT: As of August 2023 There is now a workaround if you are having issues getting this to pop that should force it to unlock. The Method is as follows

- Player 1 (going for achievement) joins an online co-op game hosted by Player 2. Join using your primary character.
- Play for a few minutes until the game has saved. Easy to do if Player 2 progresses a mission or if you go in/out of an interior level.
- Player 1 leaves the co-op game via the menu. Time since save is displayed in seconds, which can help you check you’ve had a recent save.
- Player 1 loads up single player like usual with their primary character.
- Go to a gun shop and buy a weapon you don’t already have (this is probably optional, but why chance it?)
- Go to a vendor to upgrade the weapon. Upgrade it from lvl 1 to 10, or until achievement unlocks.
All credit goes to Hirnforscher for discovering the method: https://forum.psnprofiles.com/topic/145563-how-to-still-obta... and to terrett101 for bringing that info onto TA.

EDIT3: As of August 2022 this achievement still appears to be buggy, with numerous people stating that they did not get it to pop after fully upgrading a weapon. With the new dlc Cyber Heist out: There appears to be a bunch of superior components available in it which will make it easier to upgrade for those struggling to find those in the base game. Unfortunately if you are glitched out of this achievement the best option still appears to be creating a new character or deleting your save and restarting fresh.

EDIT2: This achievement is currently very buggy and you may struggle to get it to pop after upgrading your weapon. I was able to get it to unlock by upgrading the first weapon that I spent components on (I upgraded other weapons during the game but I never let those other weapons go to a higher level than the first weapon I had upgraded). Cisco14 also mentioned that they were able to fix the bug by creating a new character and getting a level 10 weapon on there so if you can't seem to get this to unlock that may be worth trying.

Original Solution:-------------------------------------------------

Within the hub areas where all the vendors are is a "Gunsmith vendor" (The Hammers on the minimap), here you can upgrade any of your weapons if you have the parts ready.

There are 3 different parts that are used for upgrades: Basic, Advanced and Superior and a total of 10 upgrades needed.

from level 1 to 5: 1>2>3>5 component I (basic)
from level 5 to 8: 1>2>3 component II (advanced)
from level 8 to 10: 1>2 component III (superior)

You need to complete the Basic component upgrades before doing the Advanced upgrades and so forth.

You can find all of the components by exploring areas of the game, they're a purple item and usually found in the paths least taken. Basic and Advanced parts are also sometimes dropped by Bounties once you defeat them.

Superior parts are very sparse throughout the game so I would recommend spending your first 3 parts towards a weapon to upgrade it to level 10 for this achievement rather than spreading them across 3 level 9 upgrades.

One last thing to note is that these upgrades are permanent, if you accidentally sell the last version of a gun the upgrades will remain once you pick up another one!

edit1: fixed solution thanks to F77 and whyatt for the updated info!

Nope. So now, knowing that other people have done it on SECOND effing playthroughs, it seems the fuckup is actually with the character's weapon level progression and Not the weapon itself. I purchased two brand new weapons that I'd never used, sold my two MK10 weapons and upgraded one of the new ones. Not a damn thing. How hard is it to do your job and find the friggin' code for this and fix the effing thing? Oh that's right, no time to fix it, dlc/ cash grab is more important.

Can confirm - this workaround does work! I was able to test with Stony99 and both of us unlocked the achievement after being stuck at 60% and 90% respectively. That link above is pretty self-explanatory, but here are the steps:

For me, my achievement tracking incremented when I went lvl 5 to 8. For Stony, it unlocked on the very first upgrade.

This is bugged for me as well. Stuck at 70% with a weapon at level 10. I'm wondering if it bugged because the one I leveled to the max, wasn't the same gun I had at level 7? I have a couple of other guns at level 9 currently and the counter still doesn't update.
Same here stuck at 60% with six level 9 weapons every time I go to try to level up it tells me I don't have enough components. I'm at level 23 and after all this time with all the stuff I've collected it still tells me I don't have enough components.....lol

The last upgrade part is called Superior, and there are only nine upgrades costing 1>2>3>5 Basic, 1>2>3 Advanced, and 1>2 Superior.

The huge mechs also often drop parts, mostly Basic and Advanced though.

I just got the achievement and I think the guide is slightly incorrect. To fully level up a weapon (i.e. level 10) you need:
from level 1 to 5: 1>2>3>5 component I (basic)
from level 5 to 8: 1>2>3 component II (advanced)
from level 8 to 10: 1>2 component III (superior)
Thus in total, you need 11 x components I, 6 x components II and 3 x components III.
Edit: made a mistake, should now be correct.

i1i Reaper i1i I don't know of any reliable way to farm Superior parts. I think I've seen it drop from an enemy but only once, maybe? It's possible that the ones you find through exploration are the only ones you'll ever get.

I managed to get this achievement just now after being stuck at 70%. The only way I was able to do it was to create a brand new character and get enough components to level up a gun to level 10 with that new character. headspin Achievement popped as it was intended. As of now, that's the only viable solution I found that worked to solve this bug.

E vee dub since Basic and Advanced parts can be farmed, start by focusing on getting your best weapons to Mk8. Leveling weapons from Mk8 to Mk10 is comparatively negligible, so just reserve that for weapons you REALLY like.

Oh my this achievement is so buggy.

Yep, bugged for me too. Stuck at 80%. I even tried leveling a new gun all the way from 1 to 10 in one shot and still no go. If you want to save your superior components, you can force quit the game while still at the gunsmith menu and no achievement pops (after leveling to 10), and when you resume you’ll still have them, in case you wanna save em. I did actually level 1 gun up to 10 and saved legit and restarted the game to see if that would work but nope.

My tracker is at 80%. Already have a maxed out weapon. Replaced it with a low level, then reequipped. Nothing. Maxed out a mk 8 I had. Nothing. Maxed out a mk 9 I had. Nothing. Maxed out a mk 1 I had. NOTHING. This is NOT FIXED even though the patch notes specifically noted this one was. I'm putting this down for about 6 months. I'm done. Here’s my experience:
Completed the game, but this achievement did not unlock, it was stuck at 60%.
Tried creating a new character and tried lvling a gun to level 3 and further as suggested. It got me from 60 to 90%, but not further.
Created a new character and lvl’ed one gun to 10. It did not unlock.
Deleted local and cloud save and did the same thing again and this time it popped.

So anyone with the same issue, I would suggest deleting the save to avoid having to waste 8-10 hours getting the 3 superior mats needed for lvl 10 and not have it working.

This does indeed work. terrett101 just helped me out, as no one on my over 100 friends playlist plays this, and after I left his game, loaded up mine, went to vendor, bought weapon, went to upgrade shop and on my 9th upgrade which is odd, it unlocked.

So if anyone needs this, this IS a viable way to get this chievo. Takes minimal time and effort provided you have the upgrade parts available. Much better than yet another playthrough

If anyone needs this, pm me, if I'm available I'll most certainly help out.

Sorry, it was written on the whim on my phone.
Long story short, delete save, start over and collect materials. Only upgrade one gun (preferably the smg).
This means you actually have to do about 80% of the game again, since most of the superior materials either require high cyber deck level, high level or access to some of the final missions.

I wasted a playhrough doing just a new character and that didn’t work, so would recommend deleting the save :)

I can only speak for the weapons I used that were very good at different points of the game, in different playthoughs based on the build I was going for. Some of these were not fully maxed out but some were Mk. 5 to Mk. 10.

ABR Commander: Ballistic Burst Rifle
EBR Enforcer: Energy Burst Rifle
HCF Heat: Modified Handcannon
HCE9 Flatliner: Energy Handcannon
ES4 Eraser: Energy Shotgun
Riot Gun: Ballistic Shotgun
Overwhelmer: Modified Machine Gun (this one you can find late in the game in the back of a truck, IIRC. Helped greatly during final boss fight. I recommend maxing this one out if you have the materials for it late in the game)

I finally got this achievement to pop. On my main character I had two weapons at Mk. 10 but this achievement (Aficionado) never popped, even after all of the game updates the achievement progress was stuck at 80%. I tried upgrading a third weapon to Mk. 10 from Mk. 1 after the most recent patch and still no luck. I was getting really frustrated that this was my last achievement...

So, I switched to my secondary character that has roughly 30 minutes of play time and the moment I upgraded a weapon, the Aficionado achievement popped! The weapon was a Habdefender PPW at Mk.1, upgraded to Mk. 2 but I doubt the weapon type matters.

Not sure if anyone else has confirmed that this workaround method works but if you have a second character or even 20-30 minutes to create a new character and play until you have enough materials to upgrade a weapon I would definitely give this a try and see if it works.

Less a guide but a note on how to farm as many Superior Parts as you want on the same file without jumping into other peoples games.

As long as you have not got to the final fight, after crossing the bridge to complete the mission "root_access" upon entering "Project Menshen" there is a superior part after the first fight, through the blue shield doors, fought the tiny little spider bots, down to the left is the part.

Once you collect it make sure that the game has more recently saved upon quitting out. When you load back in, you will be back on the other side of the bridge at "Silo 86", so you can re-enter "Project Menshen", do the same fight again, kill the tiny bots and pick up another Superior Part.

I am aware that this is the end of the game and will only really help those, like me, who wanted every weapon maxed for the fun of it. Or those who didn't find enough to unlock it in the first place.

Enjoy...

For this achievement, you must get a weapon to Mk X (Level 10). You will need 11 Basic, 6 Advanced, and 3 Superior components to do this. Basic and Advanced parts are dropped and found as pickups or in chests fairly plentifully, but the Superior components only show up very late in the game and are quite rare. Don't upgrade a bunch of weapons to Mk 9 and have to farm forever to finally get one to Mk 10, use your first three to get this achievement out of the way.

Note: Upgrades on weapons are permanent, even if you sell the weapon. If you buy or find another copy of that same weapon, it will be at the level you upgraded it to previously.

Missable trophy! There are 10 levels of barrel upgrades in the game, and if you started upgrading a weapon, and then did not complete its improvement and decided to upgrade some new one to the maximum, then the trophy is highly likely to not drop. To get a trophy, you need to upgrade the barrel that you have already begun to improve, without overtaking it in level with others. Otherwise, you will have to start a new game.

The achievement is not so much missable as it is glitchy.

The glitch mechanism is as follows: if you improve one weapon and then another and get a higher level on it than on the first, then the counter may go off

Therefore, make sure that there is always one weapon in front
