You should get this without issue, but it didn't pop when I expected. I bought the baseball bat from a vendor and then picked up the 'Guillotine' machete with no unlock.

It popped for me when I got the long-handed hammer, dropped by an enemy.

I had the same result; I was quite irritated when the 'uplus bat' purchased from the vendor in the Harbour did not trigger any of the melee achievements.

The next melee weapon I obtained was the hammer 'Rock Crusher' (obtained from a chest in the Canary Mech Factory) which triggered all three melee achievements.

I have heard from multiple sources that the sword 'Guillotine' also did not trigger the melee achievements however I popped them before obtaining it so can neither confirm or deny that.

Update: Got a hold of Voidcutter an energy version of Guillotine. Wanna melee those Seige mechs and robots? this is the weapon for you, same base stats just Energy instead of metal. It like any melee weapon besides Rock Crusher does not trigger the melee achievements.

I can confirm, with finding the hammer and by using it u will get all 3 achievos (first melee weapon, first melee kill, first melee special kill).

I wasn't host and this achievement is now locked out for me. Won't pop no matter what melee weapon I collect or pick up including the hammer. I haven't hosted once so I'll probably need to start a new game as host from the very beginning. Surprised to see others haven't had this issue.

So for anyone having the same issue as me where this wouldn't pop because you weren't host I can confirm that if you start a new game and make your way to the dlc missions/area it WILL pop when you pick it up in your own game as host.

I was in the exact same position - played co-op, wasn't host, so didn't get the achievement. After completing the DLC in co-op, I started up my own save in single-player, talked to Kira to get the mission for the new DLC and then travelled over to the point in the picture that juergenBVB posted. Opened the box, picked up my hammer and the achievement popped.

I really like this game but the constant issues with achievements and bugs since launch have been a real PITA.

So I've opened that chest and didn't get the hammer. Anyone know where else it might spawn? Do enemies casually drop it?

For some reason, not every melee weapon works for this achievement. In fact, it's possible only one does. You can find the Rock Crusher weapon in a building NW of the harbor. See HERE for a map view.
