How to unlock the Against all Odds achievement in The Banner Saga 2 - Definitive Guide

This is done in the second battle of Rook's playthrough. It pits Rook, alone, against a very large amount of Dredge (including summoners). I was able to do it on Hard Mode.

Due to the fact that Rook is your only controllable character in this fight he will get to move after each and every enemy. Use this to your advantage by keeping an eye on the next enemy's movement range. You always want to end your turn outside of their range so that they cannot hit you. This is the key - always plan your movement out so you aren't able to be hit. I usually kept an eye on the next two Dredge in line just to be safe and sure I wouldn't be boxed in.

Your immediate goal is to kill the Stoneslinger. His ranged attack, and ability to bypass your armor, will make the fight too hard. He was the only enemy to get a hit on me. After killing him just work on dodging the enemies attack ranges and slowly whittling down their armor/strength. Do NOT outright kill any of the other enemies yet, though, just whittle them down.

Try to get their Strength down to 1-3 (which may not always require the armor to be completely depleted. Do NOT kill any of them until they are ALL one hit away from death. Don't even kill the Summoners - let them summon more Dredge. The more enemies there are the easier it will be for you to avoid them. And since they all have a very small amount of Strength an accidental misstep on your part won't be too hurtful.

When you've got all of the Dredge within one hit of death it's time to start mopping them up. Keep an eye on the turn order and try to shoot the enemies that won't move for a while first so that you don't accidentally move an enemies turn up that may be able to reach you.

TLDR: Kill the Stoneslinger immediately. Dance around outside of the movement range of the remaining Dredge while bringing their Str down very low (but not killing them). Once they're all very low, start killing them.

I've had similar issue with Intense Repossession popping up on the screen with the renown but no achievement... At least with your glitch, you don't have to go very far in the game to try it again... wink

Edit: checked and my achievement apparently popped up at some point in time. Hopefully its just a delayed glitch.

I was able to use the item Rook was equipped with in my carried over first game data by loading the save at the start of the battle.

Joker, this is directly after the tutorial when Rook runs up against an 8pack of dredge. You normally just croak and Iver scolds you after, but this achieve is if you actually win that battle.

In other news, Is there a limitation on the item you can carry over? I had Alette's bracelet on originally, and went to grab the +3 break item, but that didn't carry over although the bracelet did.

There is no limitation on the item you can bring but I am starting to think you can't load a game save and change it. Seems like the original game save stays even after you play it again. I think the only way around this is to change who survives the final fight. It may have something to do with the godstone though. But the item didn't carry over to the fight for some reason...

Does anyone know if the Against all odds is buggy? I managed to win the battle and Against all odds with yellow letters + 5 renown appeared in the game. However, the achievement was not released on the Xbox.

Anyone know anything? I tried two times.

After the first fight of the game (a tutorial), Rook will run forward away from your allies and be surrounded by dredge. You need to win this fight, all alone. It appears much harder than it really is though. The main focus of the battle will be looking at who will attack next (and it's smart to look 2-3 spots ahead as well) and make sure you are moving away from them so they will not be able to reach you during their turn. Use every attack to whittle down armor (don't attack anyone's strength until they're all at zero armor), and only kill the two smaller enemies to start (the ranged enemy especially).

You can often use an enemy as a "wall" of sorts if they have just moved, and stand behind them for a turn or two so the others can't move within range. Just make sure you begin moving again before his turn comes back around. There are a few examples of this achievement here and here if you need some strategies.

The first thing you need to do is kill the dredge thrower, then try to kill the one that only occupies one cell. For a long time I tried to completely remove the armor from all the enemies, but in the end they pinned me in a corner and killed me. As a result, the strategy of gradually removing the enemies' armor and then health, but without killing them, worked. Then they go away to call for support (no need to disturb them), new enemy units appear, the queue of moves stretches even more, and some moves are skipped. It’s better to kill the support right away, and leave the big dredges with a minimum amount of health, and when everyone has 1-3 units left, only then take out everyone one by one, naturally, trying to first kill those who are at the end of the line.

Of course you need to go through when transferring a save from the first part. In the first part, it is necessary to equip Ruk with an artifact to penetrate armor +3.

There is such an error that even when transferring a save, Ruk ends up in battle without an artifact. It is very easy to treat. It is necessary to return to the menu after the start of the battle. Load your last save there.

If there is no suitable save, for example, Rook uses another artifact, you can go to the first part, load the penultimate save and replay the last battle. If you boot from the god stone of Strakhvs, you can even change the character (in case you have a save with Aletta)
