How to unlock the Beat the Odds achievement in The Banner Saga - Definitive Guide

Egil must survive. He can be injured in fights, he dosen't die this way, but there are certain story events possibly killing him, so be aware of the following situations:

When you reach Skogr in chapter 2, right before the fight you can decide if you want Alette and Egil fight with you. If you send them away you're save, if you let them fight, a dredge will threaten Alette after the fight you have to chose in that situation first: "Shoot it with an arrow" followed by: "Stop thinking! Shoot the dredge!" to save Egil, if you take another option, Egil will die here.
At the end of chapter 2, in Frostvellr, if you decide to get into the town by ambushing the supply cart, you've to win the fight, otherwise Egil will die.

In chapter 4 don't recruit Onef.

In chapter 5, when you're in Eintartoft, on the second day you have to fight personally on the bridge, don't clear the bridge of dead bodies, as Egil will die this way. Make sure you fight and win on the second day.

The achievement will pop at the end of the game.

Missable!

You should get this in step 2 on Hard.

Chapter 2, Egil (if you allowed him and Alette to fight) will die protecting Alette if Rook does not fire an arrow at the Dredge threatening Alette by selecting "Shoot it with an arrow" and then "Stop thinking! Shoot the dredge!".
Chapter 2, Egil will be slain if Rook tries to ambush the supply-wagon and is defeated in the battle that occurs. Considering you're doing Challenge?, this doesn't matter.
Chapter 4, Egil will die in chapter 6 if you recruited Onef in chapter 4.
Chapter 5, Egil will be slain if Rook decides to help on the bridge during the second battle, but doesn't fight and instead chooses to "Help remove the bodies".

There are a number of actions in the game that will lead to Egil's death. Choose the correct options in the four situations below to ensure his survival.

  • Chapter 2: When you have to choose if Egil and Alette fight with you, send them away. [OR] Let them fight in the battle, but make sure that you choose to shoot an arrow at the dredge that is threatening Alette after the first battle (any other choice results in his death). The first option is easier, but either works just fine.
  • Chapter 2: When you have to choose how to get into Frostvellr, if you want to ambush the supply wagon make sure you win the fight. [OR] Just choose to get in through the gate or sewer options.
  • Chapter 4: DO NOT recruit Onef. He will kill Egil in Chapter 6 if you do.
  • Chapter 5: Make sure you personally fight in the battle on the bridge on the second day in Einartoft. If you choose to clear the bodies, he will die. [Not sure if you choose to leave the city or destroy the bridge on the first day what happens, if someone can test this for me.]

If you follow the proper steps above, he will not die. Dying in battle does not affect this achievement, as your troops always heal and return to your party. However, the events above will cause his actual death and removal from the game. The achievement will unlock when the credits roll.
