How to unlock the Diplomat achievement in The Banner Saga - Definitive Guide
1. This achievement is missable
2. This achievement will not pop until the end credits
Also, I will try to avoid plot points but please be aware that this solution might include some minor spoilers.
Okay, so you will arrive in Einartoft toward the end of Chapter 4. Here you will have some conversations and do a couple of battles. After this, Chapter 5 will start.
Chapter 5 will start with a story sequence elsewhere before you once again have control in Einartoft. Follow the steps below to get the achievement:
1. You will have 3 options in the town - Destroy Bridge, Fight on the Bridge, and Leave. If you don't see "Fight on the Bridge" then visit the Great Hall and it should appear after a conversation here.
2. Day 1 - Select Fight on the Bridge - When the options appear select either to Fight or to treat the wounded. If you select to fight then you will have to do a battle so keep that in mind. If you treat the wounded you will not have to do a battle,
3. Day 2 - Select Fight on the Bridge (again) - Now again, make a choice. Either clear the bodies or choose to fight. If you are trying to keep Egil alive then choose to fight!
4. Day 3 - You will now have to fight a battle. The battle is pretty easy. I used the two Varls, the mender, two archers and Rook.
5. After this you will see a cutscene where Iver convinces the Varl leader that the bridge should be destroyed. Great! You did it - now you can select the option to Destroy the Bridge from the town.
6. After a few more chapters you will complete the game. This achievement will pop during the credits.
If you have any further comments or advice, please comment and I'll update the guide.
Missable!
At Einartoft in chapter 5, visit the Great Hall a second time to be told to make yourself useful in fighting on the bridge. Then you must hold out the 3 days at Einartoft after which you'll get permission to destroy the bridge. Destroying the bridge prior to this will not count as you will not have been given permission. For some odd reason, this trophy is only given at the end of the game.
After you arrive in Einartoft (and after Iver is defeated by Bellower), you will have a few options: destroy the bridge, fight on the bridge, or leave. Make sure you choose to fight on the bridge. The first day, you can participate directly in the fight or treat the wounded, it doesn't change anything which you choose. The second day, you can fight or clear the bodies - if you're trying to keep Egil alive, make sure you fight, otherwise it doesn't matter which you choose for this specific achievement. The third day is where you are forced to fight. You learn that Fasolt died the day before, and he will be replaced by Iver who is now healthy, and furious. After the battle, he confronts Jorundr, who will finally agree to let you destroy the bridge.
IMPORTANT: This achievement does not unlock until the end of the game when the credits roll, so don't worry that you don't get it after the bridge is destroyed. I assume they did this so you don't get the achievement and reload an earlier save to keep Fasolt alive.
