How to unlock the Grudgewielder achievement in The Banner Saga - Definitive Guide

All killing achievements can be gotten in training fights.

Ekkil is the grudgewielder. He can be recruited in chapter 4, however you've recruited Onef, you'll always have a chance to recruit Ekkil at the same time or shortly afterwards. You'll have also in every situation the chance to either recruit him or take him prisoner. If you recruit him you can get a kill right away, if you take him prisioner you'll have another chance to recruit him in chapter 6 after

Guide only tells you which character is needed to get a kill. What the guide fails to do is tell the players the very specific choices you have to make to get Ekkil into your party. I had to load from Frostvellr several times to find the right combination to finally get him as a playable hero.

I made the following decisions to get him:
-When you first meet him in Frostvellr, agree to join him.
-Once you beat his men in battle, allow Onef to join you and raid the supplies.
-I chose to take all the supplies resulting in another battle.
-When you spot the "dredge" while crossing the wastes choose to meet with Ekkill
-During the meeting my first choice was "I do what is necessary..." but I'm not sure if it is a required response.
-Next I DID NOT take him prisoner but instead agreed to let him join on strict terms.

Missable!

Ekkill is the only Grudgewielder joining you in chapter 4 if you recruited Onef in chapter 4. You can also recruit him in chapter 6 if you recruited Onef in chapter 4, but turned down and imprisoned Ekkill in chapter 4 instead of letting him join. I recommend you let him join in chapter 4.

Make sure to get this during step 1 as he will not be available on hard because if you keep Egil alive then you can't get Ekkill.

Use the training tent to easily get this.

During Chapter 2, make sure you DO NOT ambush the supply cart to enter Frostvellr (choose the gate or sewer options). There is no indication of it, but Onef is with this group and you will kill him. Then in Chapter 4, agree to help Onef steal supplies before you leave Frostvellr.

Alternately, if you chose to camp outside at the walls at the end of Chapter 2, he will catch up with you shortly after you leave. Ekkill will approach your caravan a few days out from Frostvellr. You can either recruit him now, or take him prisoner and the opportunity to recruit him will wait until Chapter 6. I would suggest getting him right away to get the achievement out of the way.
