How to unlock the Remorse achievement in The Cave - Definitive Guide
Then you will have to transport this postcard over your whole journey in the cave to return it right at the end! This is not too hard, just a little frustrating because of the item swapping you'll have to do. Remember to always take the card with you! And at the end stand by the postcards with your character holding the card and press X. Voilà. Achievement unlocked.
Note: Thanks to https://www.trueachievements.com/OniKawazu.htm for reminding: When coming to the hunter puzzle - the front character (getting "eaten" by the monster) will lose the postcard (if he was the one carrying it)! Give the postcard to your second or third character (Reminder: The hunter puzzle is just the one after the puzzle of the twins. Even if you don't have them with you, you will pass that "scary" house (with that barking dog) and then get to the hunter puzzle. So that's the moment you have to be careful with your postcard!)
The easiest way to do this is, as you work your way through the game, figure out where the challenge will end, typically by a locked door or collapsing bridge. Put the postcard down near this object and complete the challenge as normal. Then pick the postcard back up before leaving the area.
As long as one of your characters are holding the postcard you can use the save and quit option from the menu and you will still have it when you turn the game back on.
Glitch warning: DO NOT save and quit while holding the postcard on a ladder or rope. IT WILL DISAPPEAR and you will have to start a whole new playthrough.
... and then taking the postcard through the cave and bringing it back before you leave and leave.
At the beginning of the game, you will have to collect three trinkets to give to the Gift Shop clerk. Once you do this, before you go through the door and begin the Cave Tour, take a postcard from the “Postcard Display” by going up to it and pressing once to dislodge it, and then again to pick it up. Then drop down the shaft past the door with the postcard in your hand. This will net you Shoplifting.
As for Remorse, you have to take the Postcard through the whole game with you until you get back to the Gift Shop right at the end. Once you get there, go up to the Postcard Display and press to return it to its original place. This may seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually pretty simple. Try and assign one character as the “Postcard Carrier” to avoid confusion, and only pick something else up with that character when it is absolutely necessary. Every time you finish a section of the game, check that you have it before you follow the “Cave Tour” signs and drop down to the next section.
If you use the Save & Quit function and load up the game again, your character will still be holding the Postcard unless you saved whilst the character holding the Postcard was on a rope or a ladder. If this happens, the Postcard will be lost and you will have to start again. If you advance so far through a section that the other two characters teleport to your location, if one of the characters left behind had the Postcard, they will still be carrying it.
Required: You to have stolen the postcard before leaving the Gift Shop.
Eventually you'll arrive back at the Gift Shop. Simply place the postcard back in the Postcard Display.
It makes sense to designate one adventurer as the Postcard Bearer and not raise anything to them unless absolutely necessary. Items on the ground don't disappear right away, so in a pinch, you can put the postcard down and then pick it up later. The main thing is not to leave the area without it (when you are running along the "Cave Tour" signs).
When saving and exiting the game, it also makes sense to keep it in your hands. If you save and exit while the character with the postcard is hanging on a rope or on a ladder, it will definitely disappear and you will have to start over from the beginning, be careful! If a character moves to a new zone and the remaining two catch up with him, then if someone had a postcard, he will continue to carry it.
