How to unlock the The Whole Story achievement in The Cave - Definitive Guide
The cave paintings will come naturally as you play through the game with each character. None of them are particularly "hidden" in a "this location I would never have reached w/o excessive searching"-way. Just keep in mind that there are 3 paintings in each character-specific dungeon.
Though if you miss any cave paintings, have a look at this great solution from Krystal109 (Neoseeker), who made a very good description of where to find each particular painting throughout the game: http://faqs.neoseeker.com/html/228419/ w/o the need of watching a bazillion movies etc. :)
There are 7 characters in total and you can carry 3 of them through the cave at once which results in 14/3 = 5 playthroughs
When you reach the end of the cave, choose to carry your personal object of desire with you outside for all 7 characters. On your 3rd playthrough only the character you haven't played yet has to carry his/her object of desire out of the cave. The other two characters must reject their gift (press "X" 3 times in front of the shop keeper) and leave the cave w/o their "OoD".
Do the same for the rest of the characters, that previously carried their OoD out of the cave, and the achievement will pop as soon as the last character leaves the cave, along with the achievements for watching all the good/bad endings and for every character reaching the bottom of the cave as well:
Example:
Characters 1-7
PT1: 1+2+3 (all accept OoD)
PT2: 4+5+6 (all accept OoD)
PT3: 7+1+2 (7 accepts OoD, 1+2 reject OoD)
PT4: 3+4+5 (all reject OoD)
PT5: 6+7+1 (6+7 reject OoD, 1 can do either)
Numbers are only for clarification and do not represent any specific character.
If you plan proper, you can also get every other achievement in the game in these 5 playthroughs as well. Simply start with the Hillbilly, the Knight and the Time Traveller for
and then do PT2+3 with the other characters AND the Hillbilly for
These are the only achievements that require a special constellation of characters.
To add to both solutions - and solve the problem many people have (as all the other paintings are fairly obvious if you explore everywhere).
There's an underwater passage in one of the lakes you fall into after the mine puzzle (before the Adventurer's/ Twins'/ Time Traveller's puzzles IIRC) - that has one of the Hillbilly's paintings - and will solve the missing 5th painting issue - even though the one it triggers is the 4th - the next one you find in the progression of the game will be the 5th painting. You just have to swim to the bottom of the lake with the Hillbilly and along the passage to get it.
Thank you.
It helped me a lot as I needed to know which combinations to use. Follow the video's and eventually you should pop every cheevo one by one as you progress with the story.

I will try and add all the videos separately so you can enjoy the TA experience without leaving the site.
Again I must state that I take no credit for any video guides. I am sharing as I really struggled with parts of the cave paintings.
Hope it helps!
This trophy will likely be the last one you earn. To unlock it, you need to unlock all Cave Paintings for all 7 characters. There are 12 for each character: 8 to be found in the Cave, and 2 each for a character’s “Good” and “Bad” endings.
None of the Cave paintings are hard to find at all. In fact, only one might cause a little bit of trouble and that’s one in the Twins’ level, where you must pull down a bookshelf to expose the painting behind it. The Paintings are in the same location every time, but change according to the characters you are playing as. For example, in one playthrough, a Cave Painting may be related to the Knight if he is in your party, but in a subsequent playthrough it may be related to the Scientist if she is in your party.
The Cave Paintings themselves are blue symbols on the wall, with the symbol related to the character in which they depict. If a Cave Painting represents a character in your party, then anyone in your party can activate it by pressing in front of it, even if it is not that specific character. However, if you didn’t choose that character at the beginning of the game, you will have to wait until another playthrough to activate it. Below is a list clarifying the different symbols of the Cave Paintings as they relate to each character:
- Adventurer - Ankh
- Hillbilly - Teddy bear
- Knight - Sword in a stone
- Monk - Meditating monk
- Scientist - Atom
- Time-Traveller - Infinity symbol
- Twins - Pair of coffins
You'll need both Corruption and Redemption and to have found every painting within The Cave, as these provide two paintings each. At least 5 playthroughs (if you don't miss any) are required. There are three character specific paintings in each specific characters puzzle, the rest you will see as you play through the game. A few may be difficult to find/reach, if you get really stuck, there is a complete text walkthough here that has all the locations listed.
