How to unlock the There and Back Again achievement in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics - Definitive Guide
If you find yourself struggling at all in this game, you can pause and change difficulty from the default "normal" to "story" to make it easier.
This achievement is unlocked by completing a "New Game +" Once you finish your first play through, the main menu has a new option added called New Game +.
In New Game +, you keep all your Character progress from your first play through. All your levels and equipment on characters is carried over. The mobs you fight in this mode are much higher level. I have strategy guides for the other achievements in this game if you feel like following them, but if you made it here then you have already played each level at least once. I will stick to what character Jobs, Abilities, and Equipment I used to beat this mode.
***The Tracker skills Fleet Shot and Sharp Sense are invaluable, I suggest having these on at least one troop. Fleet shot allows good ranged attack, and the second level has reduced mana cost so you can fire it throughout a level. Sharp Sense allows you to attack a second time on the same turn if you land a crit.
*** The Paladin skill Retribution is another invaluable skill. This should be used on at least one fighter class as well. It allows you a 50% chance to counter-attack when attacked. There were times I was engaged with an enemy and a second one came up and attacked me during their turn. My character immediately counter-attacked and killed the enemy without me even using a turn up. Very helpful as your fighter types (Soldier/Scout line jobs) can hold their own better.
My Team comprised of.....
Character 1: Rian (Fighter)
Weapon: Dagger for quicker turns
Primary Job: Gravedancer
Skills: Poisoned Blades 2, Death's Instinct 2, & Spot Weakness 3
Secondary Job: Paladin
Skills: Vindicate & Retribution
Character 2: Breg (Fighter)
Weapon: Spear for more accuracy (helps with Fleet Shot)
Primary Job: Paladin
Skills: Flurry of Steel, Retribution, & Vindicate 3
Secondary Job: Tracker
Skills: Fleet Shot 2 & Sharp Sense
Character 3: Alyadon (Healer)
Weapon: Book for ranged attack
Primary Job: Song Teller
Skills: Motivating Chord 3, Grand Concert 3, Enchanting Tune 2
Secondary Job: Mender
Skills: Soothe 2 & Awaken 2
Character 4: Gurjin (Fighter)
Weapon: Dagger for quicker turns
Primary Job: Strategist
Skills: Band Together, Flow of Battle, & Inspiring Presence 3
Secondary Job: Mender
Skills: Soothe 2 & Awaken 2
Character 5: Brea (Mage)
Weapon: Book for ranged attack
Primary Job: Bramble Sage
Skills: Firemoss 2, Channel 3, & Firemoss Bundle 3
Secondary Job: Mender
Skills: Soothe 2 & Awaken 2
I used these characters in that order. For fights that require 3 troops, use Rian, Breg, and Alyadon. If Rian was not available, use Breg, Gurjin and Alyadon and so on.
You will earn tons of Pearls (currency) in this mode, so money should not be an issue. I purchased the Empty Skeksis Vial trinket for my 3 fighters early on (+150 atk and magic) which helped a lot. Later I also purchased them for my healer/mage. By the end of the game, you should have the highest tier weapon and armor (100k each) for each of your team members. I finished the game with 435k to spare.
***** Make sure you have 300k saved up by the final 3 fights, I purchased the Aureyal Locket trinket x3 early on so I had them. *****
The final 3 fights are to kill the General, Kill the Hunter a final time, and kill the Emperor. For these fights be sure you equip the Aureyal Locket trinket in place of your Empty Skeksis Vial on your 3 fighters/melee classes. This makes them immune to almost all spells by these bosses. The only exception is Chamberlain on the final Emperor fight can still confuse your team and they run off lost for a turn or 3. This is absolutely key for the General fight, as he can land "Killing Blow" on anyone who is stunned and they die regardless of buffs or health.
Emperor Boss Strategy: For this fight I simply sent Breg at Emperor from a distance to drop his Fleet Shot 2 each turn, occasionally landing a crit so he could fire twice on his turn. I also sent Brea with him to cast Firemoss Bundle from a distance. They ate through his hp really fast actually. I sent Rian straight at Chamberlain to keep him occupied. Once I marked him and landed the first Death's Instinct, he ran away and kept casting confusion on Rian so he couldn't attack. Was actually funny how scared he seemed of my Gravedancer. Gurjin actually just stayed close to Rian as back up to engage Chamberlain in case he came towards my damage dealers on the Emperor, but he was too busy running away still from Rian that Gurjin never had to engage. I kept Alyadon my healer in the far back. The Song Teller can cast Grand Concert 3 to heal and buff everyone without having to be in range or target, so makes the best healer imo. The Emperor will drink a potion to buff himself, then cast a chain lightning that arcs pink lightning across the ground to hit your team members. Be sure to move your team out of the pink so they are not standing in it. After 1-2 turns, the Emperor will cast a spell and the ground explodes where the pink is. Then re-engage. On my first play through he did this 3 times before I killed him, on this play through with my high attack, he died after the first cast. The Scientist you can completely ignore. Just focus on the Emperor and keep one person distracting Chamberlain and this should be easy for you.
The achievement pops once the Emperor is dead.
Congratulations!
New Game + is unlocked after beating the game once, and for this achievement you must simply complete the game again. You'll start this via the main menu. All your progress including unlocked characters, levels, and equipment will carry over which makes this playthrough extremely easy, especially on Story difficulty. You'll also earn a ton of pearls (money) to purchase the best stuff.
You can beat the game with most strategies and party compositions, but here is what I generally used:
- Rian - Paladin/Gravedancer
- Naia - Paladin/Tracker
- Hup - Paladin
- Alaydon - Mender/Songteller
- Brea - Bramble Sage/Mender
I equipped my main two damage dealers with daggers to lower their recovery and give them more turns, and specialized them to Paladin with Retribution to give them a 50% chance to counter-attack when hit with a melee attack, often letting them kill an enemy outright. Gravedancer gives some DOT and debuffs, while Tracker allows for an extra ranged attack and a chance to attack twice.
Hup is not a great character, but I liked his damage and ranged attack so I just kept him around for some reason. Then you'll want one specialized healer with some buff spells, and one mage that can back up as a healer in case things get dicey. It's a fairly simple setup that maximizes damage. Getting rid of 1-2 enemies quickly is key to then overwhelming the rest and surrounding bosses.
As far as weapons and armor go, you should have enough money to purchase the best stuff with plenty to spare. For trinkets, go with Empty Skeksis Vial (+150 attack) for all your damage dealers and your mage until the final battle. In the final battle, get Aureyal Lockets for everyone as these negate all magical attacks.
