How to unlock the There and Back Again achievement in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics - Definitive Guide

*** Difficulty does NOT effect this Achievement***

If you find yourself struggling at all in this game, you can pause and change difficulty from the default "normal" to "story" to make it easier.

This achievement is unlocked by completing a "New Game +" Once you finish your first play through, the main menu has a new option added called New Game +.

In New Game +, you keep all your Character progress from your first play through. All your levels and equipment on characters is carried over. The mobs you fight in this mode are much higher level. I have strategy guides for the other achievements in this game if you feel like following them, but if you made it here then you have already played each level at least once. I will stick to what character Jobs, Abilities, and Equipment I used to beat this mode.

***The Tracker skills Fleet Shot and Sharp Sense are invaluable, I suggest having these on at least one troop. Fleet shot allows good ranged attack, and the second level has reduced mana cost so you can fire it throughout a level. Sharp Sense allows you to attack a second time on the same turn if you land a crit.

*** The Paladin skill Retribution is another invaluable skill. This should be used on at least one fighter class as well. It allows you a 50% chance to counter-attack when attacked. There were times I was engaged with an enemy and a second one came up and attacked me during their turn. My character immediately counter-attacked and killed the enemy without me even using a turn up. Very helpful as your fighter types (Soldier/Scout line jobs) can hold their own better.

My Team comprised of.....

Character 1: Rian (Fighter)
Weapon: Dagger for quicker turns
Primary Job: Gravedancer
Skills: Poisoned Blades 2, Death's Instinct 2, & Spot Weakness 3
Secondary Job: Paladin
Skills: Vindicate & Retribution

Character 2: Breg (Fighter)
Weapon: Spear for more accuracy (helps with Fleet Shot)
Primary Job: Paladin
Skills: Flurry of Steel, Retribution, & Vindicate 3
Secondary Job: Tracker
Skills: Fleet Shot 2 & Sharp Sense

Character 3: Alyadon (Healer)
Weapon: Book for ranged attack
Primary Job: Song Teller
Skills: Motivating Chord 3, Grand Concert 3, Enchanting Tune 2
Secondary Job: Mender
Skills: Soothe 2 & Awaken 2

Character 4: Gurjin (Fighter)
Weapon: Dagger for quicker turns
Primary Job: Strategist
Skills: Band Together, Flow of Battle, & Inspiring Presence 3
Secondary Job: Mender
Skills: Soothe 2 & Awaken 2

Character 5: Brea (Mage)
Weapon: Book for ranged attack
Primary Job: Bramble Sage
Skills: Firemoss 2, Channel 3, & Firemoss Bundle 3
Secondary Job: Mender
Skills: Soothe 2 & Awaken 2

I used these characters in that order. For fights that require 3 troops, use Rian, Breg, and Alyadon. If Rian was not available, use Breg, Gurjin and Alyadon and so on.

You will earn tons of Pearls (currency) in this mode, so money should not be an issue. I purchased the Empty Skeksis Vial trinket for my 3 fighters early on (+150 atk and magic) which helped a lot. Later I also purchased them for my healer/mage. By the end of the game, you should have the highest tier weapon and armor (100k each) for each of your team members. I finished the game with 435k to spare.
***** Make sure you have 300k saved up by the final 3 fights, I purchased the Aureyal Locket trinket x3 early on so I had them. *****

The final 3 fights are to kill the General, Kill the Hunter a final time, and kill the Emperor. For these fights be sure you equip the Aureyal Locket trinket in place of your Empty Skeksis Vial on your 3 fighters/melee classes. This makes them immune to almost all spells by these bosses. The only exception is Chamberlain on the final Emperor fight can still confuse your team and they run off lost for a turn or 3. This is absolutely key for the General fight, as he can land "Killing Blow" on anyone who is stunned and they die regardless of buffs or health.

Emperor Boss Strategy: For this fight I simply sent Breg at Emperor from a distance to drop his Fleet Shot 2 each turn, occasionally landing a crit so he could fire twice on his turn. I also sent Brea with him to cast Firemoss Bundle from a distance. They ate through his hp really fast actually. I sent Rian straight at Chamberlain to keep him occupied. Once I marked him and landed the first Death's Instinct, he ran away and kept casting confusion on Rian so he couldn't attack. Was actually funny how scared he seemed of my Gravedancer. Gurjin actually just stayed close to Rian as back up to engage Chamberlain in case he came towards my damage dealers on the Emperor, but he was too busy running away still from Rian that Gurjin never had to engage. I kept Alyadon my healer in the far back. The Song Teller can cast Grand Concert 3 to heal and buff everyone without having to be in range or target, so makes the best healer imo. The Emperor will drink a potion to buff himself, then cast a chain lightning that arcs pink lightning across the ground to hit your team members. Be sure to move your team out of the pink so they are not standing in it. After 1-2 turns, the Emperor will cast a spell and the ground explodes where the pink is. Then re-engage. On my first play through he did this 3 times before I killed him, on this play through with my high attack, he died after the first cast. The Scientist you can completely ignore. Just focus on the Emperor and keep one person distracting Chamberlain and this should be easy for you.

The achievement pops once the Emperor is dead.
Congratulations!

Thanks for all your great guides! Looks like a pretty straightforward completion- are there any missables?

I don't remember there being anything you could miss. If you complete your first play through and have anything left beside this achievement, then simply look closer at that one. You can mop it up if needed on this 2nd playthrough, but I think I unlocked everything but new game+ on 1st run. Game was not too bad, but achievement descriptions sucked and not a single guide when I played it. I hope this helps and good luck with the completion

Nice guide. After failing the last battle a few times, after I set my team up like this, I defeated the emperor first try.

It has been a few months since I played this, so I honestly do not remember if there was a currency penalty for choosing story or not. You earn plenty along the way regardless, so even if you pick story mode (easy difficulty), you should have plenty of currency by the end to follow this strategy. I had almost 500k to spare after buying max items for my team, plus the 3 lockets near the end.

What a cheap achievement. There is zero replay value so it's just a worthless grind

By using your existing team from the first play through, this was a pretty quick run at least Sneaky G. Only tough parts were the final fights, but follow this strategy and should breeze right through it. Good luck!

Just realized that to get to Tier 3 jobs, you'd need to be switching classes regularly to get them to at least one Level 5 skill in Tier 5. Are Tier 3 jobs ever needed in the first run?

I would not say they are needed neeker, but I worked on them right from the start. As soon as I maxed one, I moved on to level up others. Easier to level up on the easy run honestly, but not needed I don't think on 1st play through. Having learned the jobs and knowing what I wanted on the 1st play through made things go very smoothly though on this final achievement. Without T3 jobs on this run, I think you would have some trouble. My strategy won't work since you wont have the group heal from range on the final fight using Song Teller, unless that is not a T3 job. Been a while, don't remember honestly

The Songbringer's Grand Concert 3 is invaluable. I left him far away from the fight with the sole purpose of spamming it every turn, and only had Rian (Gravedancer) on Emperor. Despite the other characters always having some kind of statuses, the "heal everywhere" nature of GC3 was able to keep everyone alive. Chamberlain never attacked my other characters, only keep confusing the one nearest to him.

Great guide about the Tier 3 jobs and I'd think Tier 3 jobs make the NG+ run a cakewalk. In some fights, I was able to end them in one turn of having the Bramble Sage throwing a Fire Bundle 3 after being beefed by the Songbringer's Motivating Chord.

Thanks for the guide.

It has been a while, so not sure what my level was. You need to focus on classes to follow my Guide. You cannot reach the Tier 3 classes until you have leveled up the previous 2. Just max a class and focus on another on your first play-through if you can. Setting yourself up on the 1st play-through will make it so much easier for the final run on New Game+

Solution says:
Character 1: Rian (Fighter)
Weapon: Dagger for quicker turns
Primary Job: Gravedancer
Skills: Poisoned Blades 2, Death's Instinct 2, & Spot Weakness 3
Secondary Job: Paladin
Skills: Vindicate & Retribution

Character 2: Breg (Fighter)
Weapon: Spear for more accuracy (helps with Fleet Shot)
Primary Job: Paladin
Skills: Flurry of Steel, Retribution, & Vindicate 3
Secondary Job: Tracker
Skills: Fleet Shot 2 & Sharp Sense
Why not Vindicate 3 for Rian? Is this just because you didn't have it or are you not suggesting leveling Rian to the point of gaining Vindicate 3?

I think song teller is the most important part of this solution, along with the trinkets. I have my team set up differently but those 2 parts are identical. Thumbs up for the advice greatly appreciated. Those trinkets make some fights a one shot for my bramble mage.

Nice, gratz on your achievement TheOnlyMatto! Honestly do not remember what the vindicate was. Using the skills I posted though I breezed through the fights. Sucked doing an entire other play through though for just 1 achievement.

Yeah your strategy is rock solid. I just really didn't like the gravedancer or strategist. 2x Paladins, 2x Menders (with bramble mage as secondary because menders have more mp) and 1 song teller. Those trinkets are definitely the only way to beat that last boss tho. I managed Vinidcate 3 for both my paladins mind u. Gotta love a strong debuff on attack

So....just started New Game plus, and on the second battle, The Chamberlain can literally one shot anyone on your team.

I literally cannot get Rian and Gurlin to escape, because they get one shot, and I lose the battle. They cannot move fast enough, I guess I need to prioritize movements and turn speed?

I don't understand how I could do that with Gurlin though, as in this battle, he is the default Gurlin, so I can't change his equipment or job.

OK, I see I still have my before New Game Plus save, so I guess I have to grind enough there, so I have over 1000 HP with each character before starting New game Plus? The Chamberlain does about 1000 damage a hit, so I guess I need above that in HP.

OK, figured it out, changed Rian to a Paladin with a Dagger and he was fast enough to escape. Only he needed to reach the end. I was trying to get all classes unlocked with each of the 5 characters before, but now I'll just focus on the listed classes here.

I just wanted to say this is a pitch-perfect solution. TBS is not a genre I normally enjoy, but structuring my party like this meant I was able to basically cruise through both playthroughs (and the game actually got much easier as I went). Turned out to be a pretty fun game for what it is. I'm amazed that so few people have actually finished this, considering it's been on Gamepass... their loss, I guess.

New Game + is unlocked after beating the game once, and for this achievement you must simply complete the game again. You'll start this via the main menu. All your progress including unlocked characters, levels, and equipment will carry over which makes this playthrough extremely easy, especially on Story difficulty. You'll also earn a ton of pearls (money) to purchase the best stuff.

You can beat the game with most strategies and party compositions, but here is what I generally used:

  • Rian - Paladin/Gravedancer
  • Naia - Paladin/Tracker
  • Hup - Paladin
  • Alaydon - Mender/Songteller
  • Brea - Bramble Sage/Mender

I equipped my main two damage dealers with daggers to lower their recovery and give them more turns, and specialized them to Paladin with Retribution to give them a 50% chance to counter-attack when hit with a melee attack, often letting them kill an enemy outright. Gravedancer gives some DOT and debuffs, while Tracker allows for an extra ranged attack and a chance to attack twice.

Hup is not a great character, but I liked his damage and ranged attack so I just kept him around for some reason. Then you'll want one specialized healer with some buff spells, and one mage that can back up as a healer in case things get dicey. It's a fairly simple setup that maximizes damage. Getting rid of 1-2 enemies quickly is key to then overwhelming the rest and surrounding bosses.

As far as weapons and armor go, you should have enough money to purchase the best stuff with plenty to spare. For trinkets, go with Empty Skeksis Vial (+150 attack) for all your damage dealers and your mage until the final battle. In the final battle, get Aureyal Lockets for everyone as these negate all magical attacks.
