How to unlock the Golden Path achievement in The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes - Definitive Guide

Missable achievement - you have to fulfill several conditions
(If you do not want any spoilers stop reading here!)

22.10.2021 - Please remember that this is not a complete guide at the moment! I will update the guide when I will know something new (You can help me by writing your experience below or DM me).

Also please remember some death my appear only if you fulfill several conditions, its hard to describe all deaths.

1. Possible deaths of Eric:
- When you are chased by an Iraqi captain along with Rachel, Eric can die if he does not cut the rope on which Rachel is hanging - Rachel will fall and survive, and Eric won't be shot by the captain. (Its in Chapter "Breaking Up", his death is also shown in the picture "Fallen"). @BogusWieners mentioned that if you meet the right conditions, you don't have to cut the rope and Eric will still survive

- Eric can die after he and Jason find Nick and Salim they will argue if Salim does not surrender they will start shooting each other - it will cost Eric's life (If you do not want Eric's die, you have to work together as Nick with Samil, you can not mess any QTE while sneaking up behind the creature's back).

- Eric can die attacked by Infected-Kurum/Balathu (It depends on your choice in prologue) in chapter "Strange Aeons" during the last defense in a small house, while they fight him together with Nick or Rachel, if you mess up the QTE (QTE is a minigame which requiares to press cn_A, cn_B, cn_X or cn_Y and cn_LT or cn_RT).

- Eric and Rachel may die in the same explosion

- Eric can die attacked by Infected-Clarice in chapter "Strange Aeons" if you mess up the QTE (QTE is a minigame which requiares to press cn_A, cn_B, cn_X or cn_Y and cn_LT or cn_RT). My friend said me that but I can not confirm because I did not have such thing

2. Possible deaths of Rachel:
- She can commit suicide if she blows herself up by sticking a knife into a grenade while in the chamber with strange antique musical instrument in the middle.

- Jason can kill Rachel when she when she is turning into a vampire/demon, she can ask him to kill her or if you please to not kill her they will eventually
end up fighting each other if you mess up the QTE (QTE is a minigame which requiares to press cn_A, cn_B, cn_X or cn_Y and cn_LT or cn_RT) he will kill her.

- She can turns into one of the creatures if she will not be saved by Eric and his UV wand, or if she refuses to enter the cocoon.

- She can die after being attacked by Infected-Clarice in chapter "Strange Aeons" if you mess up QTE (QTE is a minigame which requiares to press cn_A, cn_B, cn_X or cn_Y and cn_LT or cn_RT).

- She can die in chapter "Strange Aeons" during the last defense in a small house, she will be attacked by some creatures you just can not mess up QTE, in my case it messed up when I did not press cn_X, if you press it in time she will nail the demon's hand to the floor and the fight will continue.

3. Possible deaths of Nick:
- He can die in chapter "Strange Aeons" during the last defense in a small house, the creature will catch Nick through the roof and grab him through the roof the characters will come to help him, you have to complete QTE (QTE is a minigame which requiares to press cn_A, cn_B, cn_X or cn_Y and cn_LT or cn_RT) or demon will kill him.

- He can die in chapter "Strange Aeons" during the last defense in a small house, his next die is there if you mess up QTE during fight the creature will kill him together with Eric.

- He can die in chapter "Strange Aeons" if he decide to go closer to the "main cocoon" while he plants the explosives he will get 2 choices "Retreat" and "Advance", just be extremely careful if you choose "Advance" because his death there is shown in picture "Thirst".

4. Possible deaths of Jason:
- Can die if he returns for Samil in chapter "Strange Aeons" there will be a fight, after fight the both run to the elevator but Infected-Kurum/Balathu (It depends on your choice in prologue) will throw a spear at Jason if you do not press cn_X in time Jason will die.

- He also can die during the last defense in a small house if you mess up QTE. My friend said me that but I can not confirm because I did not have such thing.

5. Possible deaths of Samil:
- He can die in chapter "Strange Aeons" during the last defense in a small house, the creature will catch Samil through the roof and grab him through the roof the characters will come to help him, you have to complete QTE (QTE is a minigame which requiares to press cn_A, cn_B, cn_X or cn_Y and cn_LT or cn_RT) or demon will kill him. In this sequence it might be him or Nick it depends on how many characters survived.

- He can die in chapter "Strange Aeons" during the last defense in a small house, all characters will find flares and stand in the circle, he might die during direct fight with creatures if you mess up QTE.

You don't have to cut the rope with Eric. I don't know what conditions need to be met, but I didn't cut it and I also didn't fall as Eric. Nick ran out and helped me but the rope snaps and she falls anyway.

So, I had everyone survive, but didn't get this achievement. In my playthrough Rachel was cocooned, so that route may not count. Apparently I missed the clue about the UV light, as that was never an option (was playing blind, but I can see there's a related achievement for that).

@BogusWeiners - For Nick to assist Eric with the rope, Merwin needs to die in the previous section with Jason and Nick. If Merwin is dead, Nick is moving fast enough to reach Eric before he falls, and will save him, even if Eric doesn't cut the rope at the second opportunity. The rope breaks, but Eric will survive.

I don't believe it matters how Merwin dies, but if he is still alive, helping him slows Nick down, meaning he doesn't reach Eric in time. Under this conditon, if Eric doesn't cut the rope at the second opportunity, he falls with Rachel and is impaled.

This achievement sucks, I saved everyone except Rachel who ended up in cocoon, and though narrator in the end said that everybody made it alive and I saw her being saved by the scientists in the epilogue, it still didn't pop up

Can you get all of these achievements playing in co-op with one other person from beginning to end and will both get the achievements?

The five characters in question are Eric, Rachel, Nick, Salim and Jason. There are a few scenarios that must be avoided in order to get everyone to the finale alive:
  • When Eric is trying to save Rachel on the edge of the cliff, make sure to cut the rope, especially if Jason and Nick are saving Merwin
  • When you find Clarice, make sure to either leave her behind at the rope, or one of the early opportunities to ditch her once she begins to change.
  • Follow the steps for The Thing trophy_bronze.png to ensure that Rachel survives and isn't trapped in a cocoon.
Beyond that, it should just be a matter of completing every QTE successfully. Things can get pretty bad when Nick goes to plant the dynamite, but each situation can be resolved without any mandatory deaths. Once you complete the standoff during the eclipse, the trophy will unlock.

For this trophy you must meet the following:
1. Kill the infected Clarice with Jason so that Eric survives.
2. Carry the infected Rachel into a cocoon, and in the process, use ultraviolet light to get rid of the parasite.
3. Complete all QTEs in the last battle.

Also, if James and Nick didn't abandon Mervyn. In the chapter "Separation" for Eric, you need to cut the rope that Rachel is holding on to. Otherwise he will fall onto the stalagmites.
Salim and James must have a high relationship, otherwise he may not come back for Salim in the end.

It is very important that all 5 characters are in the hut. All 5 characters survived, taking into account the fact that Rachel was placed in a cocoon. The Guardian had all 5 candles burning, but the trophy did not fall out. Therefore, it is important that they all survive to the hut
